Isaia 59

1 Ecco, la mano dell’Eterno non è troppo corta per salvare, né il suo orecchio troppo duro per udire;2 ma son le vostre iniquità quelle che han posto una barriera fra voi e il vostro Dio; sono i vostri peccati quelli che han fatto sì ch’egli nasconda la sua faccia da voi, per non darvi più ascolto.3 Poiché le vostre mani son contaminate dal sangue, e le vostre dita dalla iniquità; le vostra labbra proferiscono menzogna, la vostra lingua sussurra perversità.4 Nessuno muove causa con giustizia, nessuno la discute con verità; s’appoggiano su quel che non è, dicon menzogne, concepiscono il male, partoriscono l’iniquità.5 Covano uova di basilisco, tessono tele di ragno; chi mangia delle loro uova muore, e l’uovo che uno schiaccia, dà fuori una vipera.6 Le loro tele non diventeranno vestiti, né costoro si copriranno delle loro opere; le loro opere son opere d’iniquità, e nelle loro mani vi sono atti di violenza.7 I loro piedi corrono al male, ed essi s’affrettano a spargere sangue innocente; i loro pensieri son pensieri d’iniquità, la desolazione e la ruina sono sulla loro strada.8 La via della pace non la conoscono, e non v’è equità nel loro procedere; si fanno de’ sentieri tortuosi, chiunque vi cammina non conosce la pace.

9 Perciò la sentenza liberatrice è lunge da noi, e non arriva fino a noi la giustizia; noi aspettiamo la luce, ed ecco le tenebre; aspettiamo il chiarore del dì, e camminiamo nel buio.10 Andiam tastando la parete come i ciechi, andiamo a tastoni come chi non ha occhi; inciampiamo in pien mezzogiorno come nel crepuscolo, in mezzo all’abbondanza sembriamo de’ morti.11 Tutti quanti mugghiamo come orsi, andiam gemendo come colombe; aspettiamo la sentenza liberatrice, ed essa non viene; la salvezza, ed ella s’allontana da noi.12 Poiché le nostre trasgressioni si son moltiplicate dinanzi a te, e i nostri peccati testimoniano contro di noi; sì, le nostre trasgressioni ci sono presenti, e le nostre iniquità, le conosciamo.13 Siamo stati ribelli all’Eterno e l’abbiam rinnegato, ci siamo ritratti dal seguire il nostro Dio, abbiam parlato d’oppressione e di rivolta, abbiam concepito e meditato in cuore parole di menzogna…14 E la sentenza liberatrice s’è ritirata, e la salvezza s’è tenuta lontana; poiché la verità soccombe sulla piazza pubblica, e la rettitudine non può avervi accesso;15 la verità è scomparsa, e chi si ritrae dal male s’espone ad essere spogliato. E l’Eterno l’ha veduto, e gli è dispiaciuto che non vi sia più rettitudine;

16 ha veduto che non v’era più un uomo, e s’è stupito che niuno s’interponesse; allora il suo braccio gli è venuto in aiuto, e la sua giustizia l’ha sostenuto;17 ei s’è rivestito di giustizia come d’una corazza, s’è messo in capo l’elmo della salvezza, ha indossato gli abiti della vendetta, s’è avvolto di gelosia come in un manto.18 Egli renderà a ciascuno secondo le sue opere: il furore ai suoi avversari, il contraccambio ai suoi nemici; alle isole darà la lor retribuzione.19 Così si temerà il nome dell’Eterno dall’occidente, e la sua gloria dall’oriente; quando l’avversario verrà come una fiumana, lo spirito dell’Eterno lo metterà in fuga.

20 E un redentore verrà per Sion e per quelli di Giacobbe che si convertiranno dalla loro rivolta, dice l’Eterno.21 Quanto a me, dice l’Eterno, questo è il patto ch’io fermerò con loro: il mio spirito che riposa su te e le mie parole che ho messe nella tua bocca non si dipartiranno mai dalla tua bocca né dalla bocca della tua progenie né dalla bocca della progenie della tua progenie, dice l’Eterno, da ora in perpetuo.

Isaiah 59

Injustice Brings Alienation from God

1 Look, the Lord’s hand is not too weakt to deliver you;
his ear is not too deaf to hear you.t

2 But your sinful acts have alienated you from your God;
your sins have caused him to reject you and not listen to your prayers.t

3 For your hands are stained with blood
and your fingers with sin;
your lips speak lies,
your tongue utters malicious words.

4 No one is concerned about justice;t
no one sets forth his case truthfully.
They depend on false wordst and tell lies;
they conceive of oppressiont
and give birth to sin.

5 They hatch the eggs of a poisonous snake
and spin a spider’s web.
Whoever eats their eggs will die,
a poisonous snake is hatched.t

6 Their webs cannot be used for clothing;
they cannot cover themselves with what they make.
Their deeds are sinful;
they commit violent crimes.t

7 They are eager to do evil,t
quick to shed innocent blood.t
Their thoughts are sinful;
they crush and destroy.t

8 They are unfamiliar with peace;
their deeds are unjust.t
They use deceitful methods,
and whoever deals with them is unfamiliar with peace.t

Israel Confesses its Sin

9 For this reason deliverancet is far from uss
and salvation does not reach us.
We wait for light,s but see only darkness;t
we wait fort a bright light,t but livet in deep darkness.t

10 We grope along the wall like the blind,
we grope like those who cannot see;t
we stumble at noontime as if it were evening.
Though others are strong, we are like dead men.t

11 We all growl like bears,
we coo mournfully like doves;
we wait for deliverance,t but there is none,
for salvation, but it is far from us.

12 For you are aware of our many rebellious deeds,t
and our sins testify against us;
indeed, we are aware of our rebellious deeds;
we know our sins all too well.t

13 We have rebelled and tried to deceive the Lord;
we turned back from following our God.
We stir upt oppression and rebellion;
we tell lies we concocted in our minds.t

14 Justice is driven back;
godlinesst stands far off.
Indeed,t honesty stumbles in the city square
and morality is not even able to enter.

15 Honesty has disappeared;
the one who tries to avoid evil is robbed.
The Lord watches and is displeased,t
for there is no justice.

The Lord Intervenes

16 He sees there is no advocate;t
he is shockedt that no one intervenes.
So he takes matters into his own hands;t
his desire for justice drives him on.t

17 He wears his desire for justicet like body armor,t
and his desire to deliver is like a helmet on his head.t
He puts on the garments of vengeancet
and wears zeal like a robe.

18 He repays them for what they have done,
dispensing angry judgment to his adversaries
and punishing his enemies.t
He repays the coastlands.t

19 In the west, people respects the Lord’s reputation;t
in the east they recognize his splendor.t
For he comes like a rushingt stream
driven on by wind sent from the Lord.t

20 “A protectort comes to Zion,
to those in Jacob who repent of their rebellious deeds,”t says the Lord.

21 “As for me, this is my promise tots them,” says the Lord. “My spirit, who is upon you, and my words, which I have placed in your mouth, will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and descendants from this time forward,”t says the Lord.
