Giacomo 1

1 Giacomo, servo di Dio e del Signore Gesù Cristo alle dodici tribù disperse nel mondo, salute.

Le difficoltà formano il carattere.

2 Cari fratelli, pensate che la vostra vita sia piena di difficoltà e tentazioni? Allora, siatene felici,3 perché le difficoltà della vita aumentano la costanza.4 Lasciate, allora, che la vostra costanza cresca fino a raggiungere la perfezione, in modo che voi diventiate cristiani perfetti sotto ogni aspetto.5 Se qualcuno di voi ha bisogno di saggezza, la chieda a Dio e l’otterrà, perché il Signore dà a tutti generosamente e senza rinfacciare.6 Ma quando chiedete, fatelo con fede, senza avere dubbi, perché chi dubita è come un’onda del mare, sospinta qua e là dal vento.7-8 Se prima imboccate una strada e poi un’altra, insomma, se siete indecisi e non chiedete con fede, non illudetevi di ricevere qualcosa dal Signore!

Poveri e ricchi.

9 Il cristiano di bassa condizione sociale sia consapevole di essere importante agli occhi di Dio.10-11 Il ricco, invece, deve essere contento che le sue ricchezze non significhino niente per il Signore, perché anch’egli presto passerà via, come un fiore di campo. La sua bellezza appassisce non appena s’alza il sole infuocato dell’estate che fa seccare l’erba. Così anche i ricchi: moriranno e lasceranno dietro di sé tutte le loro imprese.12 Beato l’uomo che non si perde d’animo e non commette il male quando è tentato, perché, quando avrà superato la prova, otterrà come ricompensa la corona della vita, che Dio ha promesso a quelli che lo amano.13 Ma se qualcuno è tentato a fare il male non deve dire: « È Dio che mi tenta! » Perché Dio non può essere tentato dal male e non tenta nessuno.14 In realtà ognuno è tentato dal proprio cattivo desiderio che lo attrae e lo seduce:15 poi , dopo che il desiderio ha concepito, partorisce il peccato; e il peccato, quando è pienamente cresciuto, partorisce la morte.16 Perciò, cari fratelli, non lasciatevi ingannare!17 Invece, ogni cosa buona e perfetta ci viene dal Padre, il creatore delle stelle che non muta come le ombre che cambiano con il progredire del giorno. E Dio non cambia mai: non può pentirsi e mettersi a produrre tenebre, anziché luce.18 Di sua volontà ci ha generato, per mezzo della verità della sua parola; così egli ha voluto che noi fossimo come primizie fra tutte le sue creature.19 Cari fratelli, non dimenticate mai che è meglio ascoltare molto, parlare poco e non adirarsi;20 perché chi è in collera non può far niente che sia giusto secondo Dio.21 Liberatevi, quindi, da tutto ciò che è sporco e cattivo e accogliete con sottomissione la parola di Dio che è stata seminata nel vostro cuore e può salvare la vostra anima.22 Ma mettetela in pratica questa parola, non vi limitate ad ascoltarla, ingannando voi stessi con falsi ragionamenti!23 Perché se uno ascolta la parola, senza metterla in pratica, è simile a uno che si guarda allo specchio:24 vede la sua faccia così com’è, poi se ne va, e subito si dimentica com’era.25 Chi, invece, fissa il proprio sguardo nella legge perfetta di Dio, che è la legge che porta alla libertà, non soltanto se ne ricorderà, ma la metterà in pratica, e Dio gli darà grandi benedizioni in tutto ciò che farà.26 Chi dice di essere cristiano, ma non tiene a freno la lingua, non fa che ingannare se stesso: la sua religione non gli servirà a niente.27 Il cristiano che è puro e senza macchia, secondo Dio Padre, è quello che soccorre gli orfani e le vedove e resta fedele al Signore, senza lasciarsi contaminare dalle cose di questo mondo.

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are of the Dispersion, greeting.2 Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into manifold temptations;3 Knowing that the proving of your faith worketh patience.4 And let patience have its perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking in nothing.5 But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.6 But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.7 For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord;8 a doubleminded man, unstable in all his ways.9 But let the brother of low degree glory in his high estate:10 and the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.11 For the sun ariseth with the scorching wind, and withereth the grass: and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his goings.12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to them that love him.13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man:14 but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.15 Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.16 Be not deceived, my beloved brethren.17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.19 Ye know this, my beloved brethren. But let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:20 for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.21 Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.23 For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a mirror:24 for he beholdeth himself, and goeth away, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.25 But he that looketh into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and so continueth, being not a hearer that forgetteth but a doer that worketh, this man shall be blessed in his doing.26 If any man thinketh himself to be religious, while he bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his heart, this man’s religion is vain.27 Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
