Een leven vol moeilijkheden en verleidingen

1 Van: Jakobus, een dienaar van God en van de Here Jezus Christus. Aan: de Joodse christenen uit de twaalf stammen die over de hele wereld verstrooid zijn.
2 Beste broeders en zusters, is uw leven vol moeilijkheden en verleidingen? Wees dan maar blij,3 want als uw geloof die beproeving doorstaat, kan uw geduld groeien.

4 Als uw geduld dan volgroeid is, zult u zelf volgroeid zijn, alles aankunnen en een sterk en zuiver karakter hebben.
5 Als u wilt weten wat God van u verwacht, vraag het Hem en Hij zal het u graag vertellen. Want Hij staat altijd klaar om ieder die Hem daarom vraagt, voldoende wijsheid te geven, Hij zal het u niet kwalijk nemen.6 Maar als u Hem erom vraagt, moet u ook verwachten dat Hij het zal geven. Iemand die twijfelt, lijkt op een golf van de zee die door de wind heen en weer gejaagd wordt.7 Zo iemand moet niet denken dat de Here hem iets zal geven,

8 als hij twijfelachtig is en onzeker in zijn optreden.
9 Een christen die in de wereld weinig aanzien heeft, moet er trots op zijn dat hij in Gods ogen groot is.10 Maar een rijke christen mag blij zijn als hij beseft dat zijn rijkdom voor God niets betekent. Rijkdom gaat voorbij.

11 Net als een mooie veldbloem die door de brandende zon en de hete wind verwelkt. Het zal niet lang meer duren of de rijke sterft en moet zijn bezittingen achterlaten.

12 Gelukkig is hij die telkens verleidingen weerstaat en niet doet wat verkeerd is, want later zal hij als beloning de kroon krijgen die God beloofd heeft aan allen die Hem liefhebben: het eeuwige leven.
13 Maar als u moeite hebt om de zonde het hoofd te bieden, moet u niet zeggen dat God u in de verleiding brengt. God heeft nooit de neiging iets slechts te doen en Hij brengt niemand in verleiding.14 Het zijn uw eigen slechte verlangens die u in verleiding brengen.15 De slechte verlangens waar u aan toegeeft brengen u tot zonde en als de zonde volgroeid is, brengt die de dood voort.

16 Broeders en zusters, verlaat dus nooit de weg van God.
17 Alles wat goed en volmaakt is, wordt ons door God gegeven, Hij is de bron van alle licht. Hij is een en al licht en verandert nooit.

18 Hij heeft ons, volgens zijn plan, nieuw leven gegeven door ons de waarheid bekend te maken. Zo zijn wij als het ware de eerste vruchten van zijn nieuwe schepping geworden.
19 Beste vrienden, onthoud dit goed: wees snel met luisteren, maar traag met spreken, en word niet snel kwaad,20 want kwaadheid veroorzaakt alleen maar dingen die tegen Gods wil ingaan.21 Wees zachtmoedig en reken voorgoed af met alles in uw leven wat vuil is of wat maar de schijn heeft slecht te zijn. Wees dankbaar voor het geweldige nieuws dat in ons geplant is, want daardoor kan onze ziel gered worden.22 Maar naar dat nieuws moet u niet alleen luisteren, u moet er ook naar handelen. Misleid uzelf niet.23 Want als u alleen maar luistert en niets doet, lijkt u op iemand die in de spiegel heeft gekeken24 en meteen daarna weer vergeten is hoe hij er uitziet.

25 Maar als u zich blijft verdiepen in Gods wet die vrijheid brengt, en die niet alleen goed onthoudt maar er ook naar leeft, dan zal God u zegenen in alles wat u doet.
26 Als u zegt een christen te zijn, maar uw tong niet in bedwang houdt, maakt u zichzelf iets wijs. Uw godsdienst heeft niets te betekenen.

27 De christen die zuiver is en op wie God onze Vader niets heeft aan te merken, zal wezen en weduwen bijstaan in hun nood. Hoe slecht en vuil de wereld ook is, hij zal zuiver blijven.

James 1

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are of the Dispersion, greeting.2 Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into manifold temptations;3 Knowing that the proving of your faith worketh patience.4 And let patience have its perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking in nothing.5 But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.6 But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.7 For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord;8 a doubleminded man, unstable in all his ways.9 But let the brother of low degree glory in his high estate:10 and the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.11 For the sun ariseth with the scorching wind, and withereth the grass: and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his goings.12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to them that love him.13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man:14 but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.15 Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.16 Be not deceived, my beloved brethren.17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.19 Ye know this, my beloved brethren. But let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:20 for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.21 Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.23 For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a mirror:24 for he beholdeth himself, and goeth away, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.25 But he that looketh into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and so continueth, being not a hearer that forgetteth but a doer that worketh, this man shall be blessed in his doing.26 If any man thinketh himself to be religious, while he bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his heart, this man’s religion is vain.27 Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
