Prohibición del favoritismo

1 Hermanos míos, la fe que tienen en nuestro glorioso Señor *Jesucristo no debe dar lugar a favoritismos. 2 Supongamos que en el lugar donde se reúnen entra un hombre con anillo de oro y ropa elegante, y entra también un pobre desharrapado. 3 Si atienden bien al que lleva ropa elegante y le dicen: «Siéntese usted aquí, en este lugar cómodo», pero al pobre le dicen: «Quédate ahí de pie» o «Siéntate en el suelo, a mis pies», 4 ¿acaso no hacen discriminación entre ustedes, juzgando con malas intenciones?
5 Escuchen, mis queridos hermanos: ¿No ha escogido Dios a los que son pobres según el mundo para que sean ricos en la fe y hereden el reino que prometió a quienes lo aman? 6 ¡Pero ustedes han menospreciado al pobre! ¿No son los ricos quienes los explotan a ustedes y los arrastran ante los tribunales? 7 ¿No son ellos los que *blasfeman el buen nombre de aquel a quien ustedes pertenecen?
8 Hacen muy bien si de veras cumplen la ley suprema de la Escritura: «Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo»;s 9 pero si muestran algún favoritismo, pecan y son culpables, pues la misma ley los acusa de ser transgresores. 10 Porque el que cumple con toda la ley pero falla en un solo punto ya es culpable de haberla quebrantado toda. 11 Pues el que dijo: «No cometas adulterio»,s también dijo: «No mates.»s Si no cometes adulterio, pero matas, ya has violado la ley.
12 Hablen y pórtense como quienes han de ser juzgados por la ley que nos da libertad, 13 porque habrá un juicio sin compasión para el que actúe sin compasión. ¡La compasión triunfa en el juicio!

La fe y las obras

14 Hermanos míos, ¿de qué le sirve a uno alegar que tiene fe, si no tiene obras? ¿Acaso podrá salvarlo esa fe? 15 Supongamos que un hermano o una hermana no tienen con qué vestirse y carecen del alimento diario, 16 y uno de ustedes les dice: «Que les vaya bien; abríguense y coman hasta saciarse», pero no les da lo necesario para el cuerpo. ¿De qué servirá eso? 17 Así también la fe por sí sola, si no tiene obras, está muerta.
18 Sin embargo, alguien dirá: «Tú tienes fe, y yo tengo obras.»
Pues bien, muéstrame tu fe sin las obras, y yo te mostraré la fe por mis obras. 19 ¿Tú crees que hay un solo Dios? ¡Magnífico! También los demonios lo creen, y tiemblan.
20 ¡Qué tonto eres! ¿Quieres convencerte de que la fe sin obras es estéril?s 21 ¿No fue declarado justo nuestro padre Abraham por lo que hizo cuando ofreció sobre el altar a su hijo Isaac? 22 Ya lo ves: Su fe y sus obras actuaban conjuntamente, y su fe llegó a la *perfección por las obras que hizo. 23 Así se cumplió la Escritura que dice: «Le creyó Abraham a Dios, y esto se le tomó en cuenta como justicia»,s y fue llamado amigo de Dios. 24 Como pueden ver, a una persona se le declara justa por las obras, y no sólo por la fe.
25 De igual manera, ¿no fue declarada justa por las obras aun la prostituta Rajab, cuando hospedó a los espías y les ayudó a huir por otro camino? 26 Pues como el cuerpo sin el espíritu está muerto, así también la fe sin obras está muerta.

Warning against Having //Favorites

1 My friends, if you have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, you won't treat some people better than others. 2 Suppose a rich person wearing fancy clothes and a gold ring comes to one of your meetings. And suppose a poor person dressed in worn-out clothes also comes. 3 You must not give the best seat to the one in fancy clothes and tell the one who is poor to stand at the side or sit on the floor.

4 This is the same as saying that some people are better than others, and you would be acting like a crooked judge.
5 My dear friends, pay attention. God has given a lot of faith to the poor people in this world. God has also promised them a share in his kingdom that he will give to everyone who loves him. 6 You mistreat the poor. But isn't it the rich who boss you around and drag you off to court?

7 Aren't they the ones who make fun of your Lord?
8  t You will do all right, if you obey the most important lawt in the Scriptures. It is the law that commands us to love others as much as we love ourselves.

9 But if you treat some people better than others, you have done wrong, and the Scriptures teach that you have sinned.
10  t If you obey every law except one, you are still guilty of breaking them all.

11 t The same God who told us to be faithful in marriage also told us not to murder. So even if you are faithful in marriage, but murder someone, you still have broken God's Law.
12 Speak and act like people who will be judged by the law that sets us free.

13 Do this, because on the day of judgment there will be no pity for those who have not had pity on others. But even in judgment, God is merciful!t

Faith and Works

17 Faith that doesn't lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!

18 Suppose someone disagrees and says, “It is possible to have faith without doing kind deeds.”
I would answer, “Prove that you have faith without doing kind deeds, and I will prove that I have faith by doing them.”

19 You surely believe there is only one God. That's fine. Even demons believe this, and it makes them shake with fear.
20 Does some stupid person want proof that faith without deeds is useless? 21 t Well, our ancestor Abraham pleased God by putting his son Isaac on the altar to sacrifice him. 22 Now you see how Abraham's faith and deeds worked together. He proved his faith was real by what he did.

23 t This is what the Scriptures mean by saying, “Abraham had faith in God, and God accepted him.” That's how Abraham became God's friend.
24 You can now see that we please God by what we do and not only by what we believe.

25 t For example, Rahab had been a prostitute. But she pleased God when she welcomed the spies and sent them home by another way.
26 Anyone who doesn't breathe is dead, and faith that doesn't do anything is just as dead!
