Julle moenie dink dat party mense belangriker is as ander mense nie

1 My vriende, julle glo in die Here Jesus Christus wat die Koning is. Daarom moet julle nie dink dat een mens belangriker is as ’n ander mens nie. 2 Miskien kom daar in julle vergadering ’n man wat ’n goue ring aan sy vinger het en wat mooi klere dra. En miskien kom daar ook ’n arm man wat vuil en stukkende klere dra. 3 As julle dink die man wat die mooi klere dra, is belangrik en julle sê vir hom: “Kom sit hier op die goeie sitplek,” maar julle sê vir die arm man: “Gaan staan daar agter” of “Sit hier by my voete,” 4 dan dink julle dat die een persoon belangriker is as die ander persoon. Dan is julle soos tregters wat verkeerd besluit omdat hulle verkeerd dink. 5 My vriende, ek is baie lief vir julle, julle moet luister na my. Die mense van die wêreld dink miskien dat party mense arm is, maar júlle weet dat God arm mense gekies het om ryk te wees. Hulle is ryk omdat hulle in Hom glo en omdat Hy belowe het dat Hy die Koning sal wees van die mense wat lief is vir Hom. 6 Maar dit is júlle wat arm mense tverneder het. Julle het dit gedoen, maar julle weet goed dat dit die ryk mense is wat vir julle laat swaarkry en dat dit húlle is wat vir julle na die hof toe vat.

7 En julle weet ook goed dat dit die ryk mense is wat die mooi Naam van God tlaster, God aan wie julle behoort.

8 Die hemelse Koning sê in sy wette in die Ou Testament: “tJy moet lief wees vir jou tnaaste soos jy lief is vir jouself.”
As julle dit doen, dan het julle ’n goeie ding gedoen. 9 Maar as julle dink een persoon is belangriker as ’n ander persoon, dan doen julle sonde, en die wette wys dan dat julle nie gehoorsaam is nie. 10 Wanneer ’n mens nie doen wat een van die wette van God sê nie, maar hy doen wat al die ander wette sê, dan is hy so tskuldig soos iemand wat verkeerd gedoen het teen al die wette van God.

11 Want God het gesê: “tJy mag nie tegbreuk pleeg nie.”
Hy het ook gesê: “Jy mag nie iemand doodmaak nie.”
As jy nie egbreuk pleeg nie, maar jy maak iemand dood, dan doen jy nie wat die wette sê nie. 12 Wanneer julle praat of iets doen, dan moet julle altyd onthou dat God julle sal toordeel. God sal julle oordeel met die wette wat vir mense vrymaak.

13 Want wanneer God oordeel, dan sal Hy nie jammer wees vir mense wat nie goed was vir ander mense nie. Maar as mense goed was vir ander mense, dan sal God nie vir hulle straf nie.

Geloof wat net praat en niks doen nie, is dood

16 en een van julle sê miskien vir so ’n persoon: “Ek hoop dit gaan goed met jou, jy moet warm klere aantrek en genoeg eet.”
Maar as julle nie vir daardie persoon gee wat hy nodig het nie, dan moet julle weet dat dit niks help nie.

17 So gaan dit ook met mense wat sê dat hulle in God glo, maar hulle doen nie wat Hy wil hê nie. Om so te glo, beteken niks, daardie geloof is dood.

18 Maar iemand sal miskien sê: “Een persoon glo in God en ’n ander persoon doen wat God wil hê.”
Maar ek sê nee, dit is verkeerd. Wys vir my hoe jy kan glo en nie doen wat God sê nie, dan wys ek vir jou dat ek glo omdat ek doen wat God sê.

19 Jy glo dat daar een God is, en dit is reg. Die tduiwels glo dit ook en hulle is so bang dat hulle bewe.
20  tDwase mens, almal weet dat dit niks help om te sê jy glo in God as jy nie doen wat Hy sê nie. 21 Abraham, ons tvoorvader, het sy seun Isak na die taltaar gebring om hom te toffer. Julle weet dat God hom tvrygespreek het omdat hy gedoen het wat God wil hê. 22 Nou kan jy verstaan dat Abraham gesê het hy glo in God, want hy het gedoen wat God wil hê. Ja, hy het gedoen wat God wil hê, en dít het gewys dat hy heeltemal in God glo.

23 So het ook gebeur wat in die Ou Testament geskryf is: “tAbraham het God geglo, en God het hom vrygespreek.”
Daarom het God gesê Abraham is sy vriend. 24 Julle moet verstaan dat God ’n mens vryspreek omdat daardie mens dóén wat God wil hê. God spreek hom vry, maar Hy doen dit nie net omdat die mens sê dat hy in God glo nie. 25 Julle weet ook dat God vir Ragab, die tprostituut, vrygespreek het omdat sy gedoen het wat Hy wou hê. Sy het die tspioene genooi om in haar huis in te kom en sy het vir hulle gehelp om weg te gaan op ’n ander pad. 26 ’n Liggaam wat nie asemhaal nie, is dood. So is geloof ook dood wanneer ’n mens nie doen wat God wil hê nie.

James 2

Treat Everyone the Same

1 My brothers and sisters, you are believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. So treat everyone the same.
2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes. And suppose a poor man in worn-out clothes also comes in.3 Would you show special attention to the one who is wearing fine clothes? Would you say, "Here's a good seat for you"? Would you say to the poor person, "You stand there"? Or "Sit on the floor by my feet"?4 If you would, aren't you treating some people better than others? Aren't you like judges who have evil thoughts?
5 My dear brothers and sisters, listen to me. Hasn't God chosen those who are poor in the world's eyes to be rich in faith? Hasn't he chosen them to receive the kingdom? Hasn't he promised it to those who love him?
6 But you have put poor people down. Aren't rich people taking advantage of you? Aren't they dragging you into court?7 Aren't they speaking evil things against the worthy name of Jesus? Remember, you belong to him.
8 The royal law is found in Scripture. It says, "Love your neighbor as you love yourself." (Leviticus 19:18) If you really keep that law, you are doing what is right.9 But you sin if you don't treat everyone the same. The law judges you because you have broken it.
10 Suppose you keep the whole law but trip over just one part of it. Then you are guilty of breaking all of it.11 God said, "Do not commit adultery." (Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18) He also said, "Do not commit murder." (Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17) Suppose you don't commit adultery but do commit murder. Then you have broken the Law.
12 Speak and act like people who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom.13 Those who have not shown mercy will not receive mercy when they are judged. To show mercy is better than to judge.

Show Your Faith by What You Do

14 My brothers and sisters, what good is it if people claim they have faith but don't act like it? Can that kind of faith save them?
15 Suppose a brother or sister has no clothes or food.16 Suppose one of you says to them, "Go. I hope everything turns out fine for you. Keep warm. Eat well." And you do nothing about what they really need. Then what good have you done?
17 It is the same with faith. If it doesn't cause us to do something, it's dead.
18 But someone will say, "You have faith. I do good works."
Show me your faith that doesn't do good works. And I will show you my faith by what I do.19 You believe there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that. And they tremble!
20 You foolish man! Do you want proof that faith without good works is useless?21 Our father Abraham offered his son Isaac on the altar. Wasn't he considered to be right with God because of what he did?22 So you see that what he believed and what he did were working together. What he did made his faith complete.
23 That is what Scripture means where it says, "Abraham believed God. God accepted Abraham because he believed. So his faith made him right with God." (Genesis 15:6) And that's not all. God called Abraham his friend.24 So you see that a person is made right with God by what he does. It doesn't happen only because of what he believes.
25 Didn't God make even Rahab the prostitute right with him? That's because of what she did. She gave the spies a place to stay. Then she sent them off in a different direction.
26 The body without the spirit is dead. In the same way, faith without good works is dead.
