Jakobus 2
1 Meine Brüder, seid frei von Menschengefälligkeit, wenn ihr wirklich den Glauben habt, den unser Herr Jesus Christus, der zur Herrlichkeit erhoben ist, bewiesen hat und wirkt.t2 Da tritt zum Beispiel in eure (gottesdienstliche) Versammlung ein Mann, geschmückt mit goldenem Ring und prächtigem Gewand, und ihm folgt ein Armer in unsauberem Kleid.t3 Staunt ihr nun den an, der das prächtige Gewand trägt, und sagt zu ihm: "Nimm du diesen Ehrenplatz!", während ihr zu dem Armen sprecht: "Du kannst dort stehen!" — oder auch: "Setze dich unten an meinen Fußschemel!" —,4 kommt ihr da nicht mit euch selbst in Widerspruch und zeigt euch als Richter von verwerflicher Sinnesart?t5 Merkt auf, geliebte Brüder: Hat Gott nicht solche, die die Welt arm nennt, auserwählt, damit sie reich seien im Glauben und das Königreich ererben, das er denen verheißen hat, die ihn lieben?6 Ihr aber habt den Armen verächtlich behandelt! Sind es nicht gerade die Reichen, die euch Gewalt antun und euch vor die Gerichte schleppen?7 Sind sie es nicht, die den herrlichen Namen, nach dem ihr benannt worden seid,t verlästern?8 Gewiß, wenn ihr (ohne einen Unterschied zu machen) das königliche Gebott erfüllt, das zum Ausdruck kommt in dem Schriftwort: Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben wie dich selbst,t so tut ihr recht.9 Handelt ihr aber nach Menschengunst, so tut ihr Sünde, und das Gesetz verurteilt euch als Übertreter.10 Wer nämlich das ganze Gesetz erfüllt, aber gegen ein einziges Gebot verstößt, der hat damit alle Gebote übertreten.11 Denn ganz derselbe, der gesagt hat: "Du sollst nicht ehebrechen!", hat auch gesprochen: "Du sollst nicht morden!" Bist du nun zwar kein Ehebrecher, aber ein Mörder, so bist du ein Gesetzesübertreter.12 Denkt bei all euerm Reden und Handeln daran, daß ihr einst durch ein Gesetz der Freiheit gerichtet werden sollt.t13 Denn das Gericht trifft erbarmungslos den, der keine Barmherzigkeit geübt hat. Der Barmherzige dagegen braucht kein Gericht zu fürchten.14 Was nützt es, meine Brüder, wenn einer behauptet, er habe Glauben, und kann dabei doch keine Werke aufweisen?15 Kann ihn denn ein solcher Glaube retten? Denkt euch: Ein Bruder oder eine Schwester hat keine Kleidung, und es fehlt ihnen am täglichen Brot.16 Spräche nun einer von euch zu ihnen: "Geht hin in Frieden, wärmt euch und eßt euch satt!", aber ihr gäbt ihnen nicht, was sie zum Leben nötig haben, — was nützt es ihnen?17 Ebenso ist's auch mit dem Glauben: hat er keine Werke aufzuweisen, dann ist er in sich selber tot.18 Man könnte nun (jemand, der sich auf einen Glauben ohne Werke verläßt) dies erwidern: "Du hast Glauben (wie du sagst), und ich habe (neben dem Glauben auch noch) Werke aufzuweisen. Zeig mir deinen Glauben, der ohne Werke ist, dann will ich dir aus meinen Werken meinen Glauben zeigen!19 Du glaubst: es gibt nur einen Gott? Sehr schön! Aber das glauben auch die bösen Geister, und trotzdem zittern sie.20 Willst du gedankenloser Mensch nun einsehen, daß ein Glaube ohne Werke nutzlos ist, (so frage dich:)21 Ist unser Vater Abraham nicht durch Werke gerechtfertigt worden? Er hat ja seinen Sohn Isaak auf dem Opferaltar dargebracht.22 Da siehst du: sein Glaube ging mit seinen Werken Hand in Hand, und erst durch seine Werke ist sein Glaube vollkommen geworden.23 So hat sich das Schriftwort erfüllt: Abraham glaubte Gott, und das ward ihm zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet,t und er wurde Gottes Freundt genannt."t24 Ihr seht also: der Mensch wird durch Werke gerechtfertigt, und nicht durch Glauben allein.25 Ist nicht ebenso auch die Dirne Rahab durch Werke gerechtfertigt worden? Sie hat ja die Kundschafter bei sich aufgenommen und sie nachher auf einem anderen Weg entkommen lassen.26 Geradeso wie der Leib ohne Geist tot ist, ebenso ist auch der Glaube ohne Werke tot.

1 My brethren, hold not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.2 For if there come into your synagogue a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, and there come in also a poor man in vile clothing;3 and ye have regard to him that weareth the fine clothing, and say, Sit thou here in a good place; and ye say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool;4 Do ye not make distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?5 Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him?6 But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats?7 Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which ye are called?8 Howbeit if ye fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:9 but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is become guilty of all.11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou dost not commit adultery, but killest, thou art become a transgressor of the law.12 So speak ye, and so do, as men that are to be judged by a law of liberty.13 For judgment is without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.14 What doth it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have not works? can that faith save him?15 If a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food,16 and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit?17 Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself.18 Yea, a man will say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith apart from thy works, and I by my works will show thee my faith.19 Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well: the demons also believe, and shudder.20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith apart from works is barren?21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son upon the altar?22 Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect;23 and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness; and he was called the friend of God.24 Ye see that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.25 And in like manner was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
