Non fate preferenze…

1 Fratelli miei, voi che credete nel nostro glorioso Signore Gesù Cristo, non fate preferenze personali.2 Poniamo il caso che entri nella vostra chiesa un uomo con abiti di lusso e anelli d’oro; e che entri anche un povero vestito male.3 Ora, se coprite d’attenzioni il ricco, dandogli il posto migliore, ma dite al povero: « Tu stai lì in piedi, oppure siedi qui in terra, vicino al mio sgabello »,4 non fate forse, dentro di voi, delle differenze e giudicate secondo cattivi pensieri?5 Ascoltate, cari fratelli: Dio ha scelto quelli che sono poveri agli occhi del mondo per farli diventare ricchi di fede ed eredi del Regno dei Cieli, quel regno che egli ha promesso a tutti quelli che l’amano.6 Eppure, dei due forestieri, voi avete disprezzato il povero! Non vi rendete conto che di solito sono proprio i ricchi quelli che vi opprimono e vi trascinano in tribunale?7 E troppo spesso sono proprio loro che bestemmiano Gesù Cristo, di cui voi portate il bel nome!8 Una cosa è certa: è bene che obbediate alla legge regale, così come la presenta la Scrittura: « Ama il prossimo tuo come te stesso ».9 Se invece fate delle distinzioni personali, disobbedite a questo comandamento e commettete peccato.10 Chi osserva tutte le leggi di Dio, ma manca anche soltanto in un punto, si rende colpevole come se avesse violato tutta quanta la legge.11 Perché Dio, che ha detto: « Non commettere adulterio », ha detto anche: « Non uccidere ». Ora, se tu non commetti adulterio, ma poi uccidi qualcuno, sei colpevole nei confronti di tutta la legge di Dio.12 Pur essendo liberi di scegliere, voi dovrete essere giudicati, perciò badate bene a quello che fate e pensate;13 perché Dio giudicherà senza misericordia chi non avrà avuto misericordia degli altri. Ma se siete stati misericordiosi, per voi trionferà la misericordia di Dio e non sarete puniti.

La fede o le opere?

14 A che serve, fratelli miei, dire che avete fede e siete cristiani, se non lo provate con i fatti? Come può una fede del genere salvare qualcuno?15 Se qualcuno dei vostri, uomo o donna che sia, ha bisogno di cibo e vestiti16 e voi gli dite: « Arrivederci, e che Dio ti benedica! Riscaldati e mangia quanto vuoi », ma poi non gli date quello che gli occorre, a che gli servono le vostre parole?17 Vedete, perciò, che non basta soltanto avere fede. Dovete anche agire bene per dimostrare che l’avete. La fede che non si rivela con le buone opere non è affatto fede: è una cosa morta e inutile.18 Qualcuno, però, potrebbe anche dire: « Tu hai la tua fede, io, invece, faccio le buone opere ». Al che, io risponderei: « Dimostrami come può esistere la tua fede senza le opere, se sei capace, perché io posso mostrarti la mia fede con le opere che compio! »19 C’è ancora fra voi chi pensa che « soltanto credere » sia abbastanza? Per esempio, tu credi che c’è un solo Dio. È giusto, ma anche i demòni lo credono, tanto da tremare di terrore!20 Sciocchi! Quando mai imparerete che « credere » non serve a niente, se non fate ciò che Dio vuole da voi? La fede che non produce buone opere non è vera fede.21 Perfino nostro padre Abramo fu riconosciuto giusto da Dio per ciò che fece, quando fu pronto ad obbedire al Signore al punto di immolare suo figlio Isacco sull’altare!22 Vedete, per la sua fede in Dio, Abramo era pronto a fare qualsiasi cosa il Signore gli avesse ordinato: dunque la sua fede divenne perfetta proprio per mezzo delle azioni, delle sue buone opere.23 E fu così che si avverò ciò che dicevano le Scritture: « Abramo credette in Dio e il Signore lo dichiarò giusto ai suoi occhi ». Egli fu perfino chiamato « l’amico di Dio ».24 Vedete perciò che un uomo è salvato anche in base alle opere, e non soltanto per la fede.25 La prostituta Raab ci offre un altro esempio del genere. Raab fu dichiarata giusta per le sue opere, quando ospitò gl’inviati degli Israeliti e li fece partire per una strada sicura.26 Insomma, come il corpo senza spirito è morto, così anche la fede è morta, se non produce buone opere.

James 2

1 My brethren, hold not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.2 For if there come into your synagogue a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, and there come in also a poor man in vile clothing;3 and ye have regard to him that weareth the fine clothing, and say, Sit thou here in a good place; and ye say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool;4 Do ye not make distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?5 Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him?6 But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats?7 Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which ye are called?8 Howbeit if ye fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:9 but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is become guilty of all.11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou dost not commit adultery, but killest, thou art become a transgressor of the law.12 So speak ye, and so do, as men that are to be judged by a law of liberty.13 For judgment is without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.14 What doth it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have not works? can that faith save him?15 If a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food,16 and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit?17 Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself.18 Yea, a man will say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith apart from thy works, and I by my works will show thee my faith.19 Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well: the demons also believe, and shudder.20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith apart from works is barren?21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son upon the altar?22 Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect;23 and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness; and he was called the friend of God.24 Ye see that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.25 And in like manner was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
