No mostrar preferencia entre las personas

1  Mis amados hermanos, ¿cómo pueden afirmar que tienen fe en nuestro glorioso Señor Jesucristo si favorecen más a algunas personas que a otras?

2 Por ejemplo, supongamos que alguien llega a su reuniónt vestido con ropa elegante y joyas costosas y al mismo tiempo entra una persona pobre y con ropa sucia. 3 Si ustedes le dan un trato preferencial a la persona rica y le dan un buen asiento, pero al pobre le dicen: «Tú puedes quedarte de pie allá o bien sentarte en el piso», ¿acaso 4 esta discriminación no demuestra que sus juicios son guiados por malas intenciones?

5 Escúchenme, amados hermanos. ¿No eligió Dios a los pobres de este mundo para que sean ricos en fe? ¿No son ellos los que heredarán el reino que Dios prometió a quienes lo aman? 6 ¡Pero ustedes desprecian a los pobres! ¿Acaso no son los ricos quienes los oprimen a ustedes y los arrastran a los tribunales? 7 ¿Acaso no son ellos los que insultan a Jesucristo, cuyo noble nombret ustedes llevan?

8 Por supuesto, hacen bien cuando obedecen la ley suprema tal como aparece en las Escrituras: «Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo»t; 9 pero si favorecen más a algunas personas que a otras, cometen pecado. Son culpables de violar la ley.

10 Pues el que obedece todas las leyes de Dios menos una es tan culpable como el que las desobedece todas, 11 porque el mismo Dios que dijo: «No cometas adulterio», también dijo: «No cometas asesinato»t. Así que, si ustedes matan a alguien pero no cometen adulterio, de todos modos han violado la ley.

12 Entonces, en todo lo que digan y en todo lo que hagan, recuerden que serán juzgados por la ley que los hace libres. 13 No habrá compasión para quienes no hayan tenido compasión de otros, pero si ustedes han sido compasivos, Dios será misericordioso con ustedes cuando los juzgue.

La fe sin buenas acciones está muerta

14 Amados hermanos, ¿de qué le sirve a uno decir que tiene fe si no lo demuestra con sus acciones? ¿Puede esa clase de fe salvar a alguien? 15 Supónganse que ven a un hermano o una hermana que no tiene qué comer ni con qué vestirse 16 y uno de ustedes le dice: «Adiós, que tengas un buen día; abrígate mucho y aliméntate bien», pero no le da ni alimento ni ropa. ¿Para qué le sirve?

17 Como pueden ver, la fe por sí sola no es suficiente. A menos que produzca buenas acciones, está muerta y es inútil.

18 Ahora bien, alguien podría argumentar: «Algunas personas tienen fe; otras, buenas acciones». Pero yo les digo: «¿Cómo me mostrarás tu fe si no haces buenas acciones? Yo les mostraré mi fe con mis buenas acciones».

19 Tú dices tener fe porque crees que hay un solo Dios.t ¡Bien hecho! Aun los demonios lo creen y tiemblan aterrorizados. 20 ¡Qué tontería! ¿Acaso no te das cuenta de que la fe sin buenas acciones es inútil?

21 ¿No recuerdas que nuestro antepasado Abraham fue declarado justo ante Dios por sus acciones cuando ofreció a su hijo Isaac sobre el altar? 22 ¿Ya ves?, su fe y sus acciones actuaron en conjunto: sus acciones hicieron que su fe fuera completa. 23 Y así se cumplió lo que dicen las Escrituras: «Abraham le creyó a Dios, y Dios lo consideró justo debido a su fe»t. Incluso lo llamaron «amigo de Dios»t. 24 Como puedes ver, se nos declara justos a los ojos de Dios por lo que hacemos y no sólo por la fe.

25 Rahab, la prostituta, es otro ejemplo. Fue declarada justa ante Dios por sus acciones cuando ella escondió a los mensajeros y los ayudó a regresar sin riesgo alguno por otro camino. 26 Así como el cuerpo sin alientot está muerto, así también la fe sin buenas acciones está muerta.

Warning against Having //Favorites

1 My friends, if you have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, you won't treat some people better than others. 2 Suppose a rich person wearing fancy clothes and a gold ring comes to one of your meetings. And suppose a poor person dressed in worn-out clothes also comes. 3 You must not give the best seat to the one in fancy clothes and tell the one who is poor to stand at the side or sit on the floor.

4 This is the same as saying that some people are better than others, and you would be acting like a crooked judge.
5 My dear friends, pay attention. God has given a lot of faith to the poor people in this world. God has also promised them a share in his kingdom that he will give to everyone who loves him. 6 You mistreat the poor. But isn't it the rich who boss you around and drag you off to court?

7 Aren't they the ones who make fun of your Lord?
8  t You will do all right, if you obey the most important lawt in the Scriptures. It is the law that commands us to love others as much as we love ourselves.

9 But if you treat some people better than others, you have done wrong, and the Scriptures teach that you have sinned.
10  t If you obey every law except one, you are still guilty of breaking them all.

11 t The same God who told us to be faithful in marriage also told us not to murder. So even if you are faithful in marriage, but murder someone, you still have broken God's Law.
12 Speak and act like people who will be judged by the law that sets us free.

13 Do this, because on the day of judgment there will be no pity for those who have not had pity on others. But even in judgment, God is merciful!t

Faith and Works

17 Faith that doesn't lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!

18 Suppose someone disagrees and says, “It is possible to have faith without doing kind deeds.”
I would answer, “Prove that you have faith without doing kind deeds, and I will prove that I have faith by doing them.”

19 You surely believe there is only one God. That's fine. Even demons believe this, and it makes them shake with fear.
20 Does some stupid person want proof that faith without deeds is useless? 21 t Well, our ancestor Abraham pleased God by putting his son Isaac on the altar to sacrifice him. 22 Now you see how Abraham's faith and deeds worked together. He proved his faith was real by what he did.

23 t This is what the Scriptures mean by saying, “Abraham had faith in God, and God accepted him.” That's how Abraham became God's friend.
24 You can now see that we please God by what we do and not only by what we believe.

25 t For example, Rahab had been a prostitute. But she pleased God when she welcomed the spies and sent them home by another way.
26 Anyone who doesn't breathe is dead, and faith that doesn't do anything is just as dead!
