EPISTOLA DI S. GIACOMO 2

1 Fratelli miei, la vostra fede nel nostro Signor Gesù Cristo, il Signor della gloria, sia scevra da riguardi personali. 2 Perché, se nella vostra raunanza entra un uomo con l'anello d'oro, vestito splendidamente, e v'entra pure un povero vestito malamente, 3 e voi avete riguardo a quello che veste splendidamente e gli dite: Tu, siedi qui in un posto onorevole; e al povero dite: Tu, stattene là in piè, o siedi appiè del mio sgabello, 4 non fate voi una differenza nella vostra mente, e non diventate giudici dai pensieri malvagi? 5 Ascoltate, fratelli miei diletti: Iddio non ha egli scelto quei che sono poveri secondo il mondo perché siano ricchi in fede ed eredi del Regno che ha promesso a coloro che l'amano? 6 Ma voi avete disprezzato il povero! Non son forse i ricchi quelli che vi opprimono e che vi traggono ai tribunali? 7 Non sono essi quelli che bestemmiano il buon nome che è stato invocato su di voi? 8 Certo, se adempite la legge reale, secondo che dice la Scrittura: Ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso, fate bene; 9 ma se avete dei riguardi personali, voi commettete un peccato essendo dalla legge convinti quali trasgressori. 10 Poiché chiunque avrà osservato tutta la legge, e avrà fallito in un sol punto, si rende colpevole su tutti i punti. 11 Poiché Colui che ha detto: Non commettere adulterio, ha detto anche: Non uccidere. Ora, se tu non commetti adulterio ma uccidi, sei diventato trasgressore della legge. 12 Parlate e operate come dovendo esser giudicati da una legge di libertà. 13 Perché il giudicio è senza misericordia per colui che non ha usato misericordia: la misericordia trionfa del giudicio. 14 Che giova, fratelli miei, se uno dice d'aver fede ma non ha opere? Può la fede salvarlo? 15 Se un fratello o una sorella son nudi e mancanti del cibo quotidiano, 16 e un di voi dice loro: Andatevene in pace, scaldatevi e satollatevi; ma non date loro le cose necessarie al corpo, che giova? 17 Così è della fede; se non ha opere, è per se stessa morta. 18 Anzi uno piuttosto dirà: Tu hai la fede, ed io ho le opere; mostrami la tua fede senza le tue opere, e io con le mie opere ti mostrerò la mia fede. 19 Tu credi che v'è un sol Dio, e fai bene; anche i demoni lo credono e tremano. 20 Ma vuoi tu, o uomo vano, conoscere che la fede senza le opere non ha valore? 21 Abramo, nostro padre, non fu egli giustificato per le opere quando offrì il suo figliuolo Isacco sull'altare? 22 Tu vedi che la fede operava insieme con le opere di lui, e che per le opere la sua fede fu resa compiuta; 23 e così fu adempiuta la Scrittura che dice: E Abramo credette a Dio, e ciò gli fu messo in conto di giustizia; e fu chiamato amico di Dio. 24 Voi vedete che l'uomo è giustificato per opere, e non per fede soltanto. 25 Parimente, Raab, la meretrice, non fu anch'ella giustificata per le opere quando accolse i messi e li mandò via per un altro cammino? 26 Infatti, come il corpo senza lo spirito è morto, così anche la fede senza le opere è morta.

Warning against Having //Favorites

1 My friends, if you have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, you won't treat some people better than others. 2 Suppose a rich person wearing fancy clothes and a gold ring comes to one of your meetings. And suppose a poor person dressed in worn-out clothes also comes. 3 You must not give the best seat to the one in fancy clothes and tell the one who is poor to stand at the side or sit on the floor.

4 This is the same as saying that some people are better than others, and you would be acting like a crooked judge.
5 My dear friends, pay attention. God has given a lot of faith to the poor people in this world. God has also promised them a share in his kingdom that he will give to everyone who loves him. 6 You mistreat the poor. But isn't it the rich who boss you around and drag you off to court?

7 Aren't they the ones who make fun of your Lord?
8  t You will do all right, if you obey the most important lawt in the Scriptures. It is the law that commands us to love others as much as we love ourselves.

9 But if you treat some people better than others, you have done wrong, and the Scriptures teach that you have sinned.
10  t If you obey every law except one, you are still guilty of breaking them all.

11 t The same God who told us to be faithful in marriage also told us not to murder. So even if you are faithful in marriage, but murder someone, you still have broken God's Law.
12 Speak and act like people who will be judged by the law that sets us free.

13 Do this, because on the day of judgment there will be no pity for those who have not had pity on others. But even in judgment, God is merciful!t

Faith and Works

17 Faith that doesn't lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!

18 Suppose someone disagrees and says, “It is possible to have faith without doing kind deeds.”
I would answer, “Prove that you have faith without doing kind deeds, and I will prove that I have faith by doing them.”

19 You surely believe there is only one God. That's fine. Even demons believe this, and it makes them shake with fear.
20 Does some stupid person want proof that faith without deeds is useless? 21 t Well, our ancestor Abraham pleased God by putting his son Isaac on the altar to sacrifice him. 22 Now you see how Abraham's faith and deeds worked together. He proved his faith was real by what he did.

23 t This is what the Scriptures mean by saying, “Abraham had faith in God, and God accepted him.” That's how Abraham became God's friend.
24 You can now see that we please God by what we do and not only by what we believe.

25 t For example, Rahab had been a prostitute. But she pleased God when she welcomed the spies and sent them home by another way.
26 Anyone who doesn't breathe is dead, and faith that doesn't do anything is just as dead!
