야고보서 2

차별을 경고함

1 나의 t형제자매 여러분, 여러분은 영광의 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 믿고 있으니, 사람을 차별하여 대하지 마십시오. 2 이를테면, 여러분의 회당에 화려한 옷을 입은 사람이 금반지를 끼고 들어오고, 또, 남루한 옷을 입은 가난한 사람도 들어온다고 합시다. 3 여러분이 화려한 옷차림을 한 사람에게는 특별한 호의를 보이면서 “여기 좋은 자리에 앉으십시오” 하고, 가난한 사람에게는 “당신은 거기 서 있든지, t내 발치에 앉든지 하오” 하고 말하면, 4 바로 여러분은 서로 차별을 하고, 나쁜 생각으로 남을 판단하는 사람이 된 것이 아니고 무엇이겠습니까? 5 사랑하는 t형제자매 여러분, 들으십시오. 하나님께서는 세상의 가난한 사람을 택하셔서 믿음에 부요한 사람이 되게 하시고, 하나님을 사랑하는 이들에게 약속하신 그 나라의 상속자가 되게 하시지 않았습니까? 6 그런데 여러분은 가난한 사람을 업신여겼습니다. 여러분을 압제하는 사람은 부자들이 아닙니까? 또 여러분을 법정으로 끌고 가는 사람도 부자들이 아닙니까? 7 여러분이 받드는 그 존귀한 이름을 모독하는 사람도 부자들이 아닙니까? 8 여러분이 성경을 따라 t“네 이웃을 네 몸같이 사랑하라”는 으뜸가는 법을 지키면, 잘하는 일입니다. 9 그러나 여러분이 사람을 차별해서 대하면 죄를 짓는 것이요, 여러분은 율법을 따라 범법자로 판정을 받게 됩니다. 10 누구든지 율법 전체를 지키다가도 한 조목에서 실수하면, 전체를 범한 셈이 되기 때문입니다. 11 t“간음하지 말라” 하신 분이 또한 t“살인하지 말라”고 말씀하셨습니다. 어떤 사람이 간음은 하지 않는다고 하더라도 살인을 하면, 결국 그 사람은 율법을 범하는 것입니다. 12 여러분은, 자유를 주는 율법을 따라 앞으로 심판을 받을 각오로, 말도 그렇게 하고 행동도 그렇게 하십시오. 13 심판은 자비를 베풀지 않는 사람에게는 무자비합니다. 그러나 자비는 심판을 이깁니다.

행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 것이다

14 나의 t형제자매 여러분, 누가 믿음이 있다고 말하면서도 행함이 없으면, 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까? 그런 믿음이 그를 구원할 수 있겠습니까? 15 어떤 형제나 자매가 헐벗고, 그 날 먹을 것조차 없는데, 16 여러분 가운데서 누가 그들에게 말하기를 “평안히 가서, 몸을 따뜻하게 하고, 배부르게 먹으십시오” 하면서, 말만 하고 몸에 필요한 것들을 주지 않는다고 하면, 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까? 17 이와 같이 믿음에 행함이 따르지 않으면, 그 자체만으로는 죽은 것입니다. 18 어떤 사람은 이렇게 말할 것입니다. “너에게는 믿음이 있고, 나에게는 행함이 있다. 행함이 없는 너의 믿음을 나에게 보여라. 그리하면 나는 행함으로 나의 믿음을 너에게 보이겠다.” 19 그대는 하나님께서 한 분이심을 믿고 있습니다. 잘하는 일입니다. 그런데 귀신들도 그렇게 믿고 떱니다. 20 아, 어리석은 사람이여, 그대는 행함이 없는 믿음은 쓸모가 없다는 것을 알고 싶습니까? 21 우리 조상 아브라함이 자기 아들 이삭을 제단에 바치고서 행함으로 의롭게 된 것이 아닙니까? 22 그대가 보는 대로 믿음이 그의 행함과 함께 작용을 한 것입니다. 그러므로 행함으로 믿음이 완전하게 되었습니다. 23 그래서 t“아브라함이 하나님을 믿으니, 하나님께서 그것을 아브라함의 의로움으로 여기셨다”고 한 성경 말씀이 이루어졌고, 또 사람들이 그를 하나님의 벗이라고 불렀습니다. 24 여러분이 아는 대로, 사람은 행함으로 의롭게 되는 것이지, 믿음으로만 되는 것이 아닙니다. 25 창녀 라합도 정탐꾼들을 접대하여 다른 길로 내보내서, 행함으로 의롭게 된 것이 아닙니까? 26 영혼이 없는 몸이 죽은 것과 같이, 행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 것입니다.

Warning against Having //Favorites

1 My friends, if you have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, you won't treat some people better than others. 2 Suppose a rich person wearing fancy clothes and a gold ring comes to one of your meetings. And suppose a poor person dressed in worn-out clothes also comes. 3 You must not give the best seat to the one in fancy clothes and tell the one who is poor to stand at the side or sit on the floor.

4 This is the same as saying that some people are better than others, and you would be acting like a crooked judge.
5 My dear friends, pay attention. God has given a lot of faith to the poor people in this world. God has also promised them a share in his kingdom that he will give to everyone who loves him. 6 You mistreat the poor. But isn't it the rich who boss you around and drag you off to court?

7 Aren't they the ones who make fun of your Lord?
8  t You will do all right, if you obey the most important lawt in the Scriptures. It is the law that commands us to love others as much as we love ourselves.

9 But if you treat some people better than others, you have done wrong, and the Scriptures teach that you have sinned.
10  t If you obey every law except one, you are still guilty of breaking them all.

11 t The same God who told us to be faithful in marriage also told us not to murder. So even if you are faithful in marriage, but murder someone, you still have broken God's Law.
12 Speak and act like people who will be judged by the law that sets us free.

13 Do this, because on the day of judgment there will be no pity for those who have not had pity on others. But even in judgment, God is merciful!t

Faith and Works

14 My friends, what good is it to say you have faith, when you don't do anything to show you really do have faith? Can this kind of faith save you? 15 If you know someone who doesn't have any clothes or food, 16 you shouldn't just say, “I hope all goes well for you. I hope you will be warm and have plenty to eat.” What good is it to say this, unless you do something to help?

17 Faith that doesn't lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!

18 Suppose someone disagrees and says, “It is possible to have faith without doing kind deeds.”
I would answer, “Prove that you have faith without doing kind deeds, and I will prove that I have faith by doing them.”

19 You surely believe there is only one God. That's fine. Even demons believe this, and it makes them shake with fear.
20 Does some stupid person want proof that faith without deeds is useless? 21 t Well, our ancestor Abraham pleased God by putting his son Isaac on the altar to sacrifice him. 22 Now you see how Abraham's faith and deeds worked together. He proved his faith was real by what he did.

23 t This is what the Scriptures mean by saying, “Abraham had faith in God, and God accepted him.” That's how Abraham became God's friend.
24 You can now see that we please God by what we do and not only by what we believe.

25 t For example, Rahab had been a prostitute. But she pleased God when she welcomed the spies and sent them home by another way.
26 Anyone who doesn't breathe is dead, and faith that doesn't do anything is just as dead!
