Amonestación contra la discriminación

1 Hermanos míos, ustedes que tienen fe en nuestro glorioso Señor Jesucristo, no deben hacer diferencias entre las personas.2 Puede darse el caso de que al lugar donde ustedes se reúnen llegue alguien vestido con ropa elegante y con anillos de oro, y llegue también un pobre vestido con ropa andrajosa.3 Si ustedes reciben gustosos al que viste la ropa elegante, y le dicen: «Venga usted, siéntese aquí, que es un buen lugar», pero al pobre le dicen: «Tú, quédate allá de pie, o siéntate en el suelo»,4 ¿acaso no están discriminando entre ustedes y haciendo juicios malintencionados?5 Amados hermanos míos, escuchen esto: ¿Acaso no ha escogido Dios a los pobres de este mundo para que sean ricos en fe y herederos del reino que él ha prometido a los que lo aman?6 ¡Pero ustedes han despreciado a los pobres! ¿Acaso no son los ricos quienes los explotan a ustedes, y quienes los llevan ante los tribunales?7 ¿Acaso no son ellos los que blasfeman contra el precioso nombre que fue invocado sobre ustedes?

8 Bien harán ustedes en cumplir la ley suprema de la Escritura: «Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo»;t9 pero si ustedes hacen diferencia entre una persona y otra, cometen un pecado y son culpables ante la ley.10 Porque cualquiera que cumpla toda la ley, pero que falle en un solo mandato, ya es culpable de haber fallado en todos.11 Porque el que dijo «No cometerás adulterio»t también dijo «No matarás».t Es decir, que alguien puede no cometer adulterio, pero si mata, ya ha violado la ley.12 Hablen y vivan como quienes van a ser juzgados por la ley que nos da libertad,13 pues a los que no tienen compasión de otros, tampoco se les tendrá compasión cuando sean juzgados, porque la compasión prevalece sobre el juicio.

La fe sin obras es muerta

14 Hermanos míos, ¿de qué sirve decir que se tiene fe, si no se tienen obras? ¿Acaso esa fe puede salvar?15 Si un hermano o una hermana están desnudos, y no tienen el alimento necesario para cada día,16 y alguno de ustedes les dice: «Vayan tranquilos; abríguense y coman hasta quedar satisfechos», pero no les da lo necesario para el cuerpo, ¿de qué sirve eso?17 Lo mismo sucede con la fe: si no tiene obras, está muerta.

18 Pero alguien podría decir: «Tú tienes fe, y yo tengo obras. Muéstrame tu fe sin obras, y yo te mostraré mi fe por mis obras.»19 Tú crees que Dios es uno, y haces bien. ¡Pues también los demonios lo creen, y tiemblan!20 ¡No seas tonto! ¿Quieres pruebas de que la fe sin obras es muerta?21 ¿Acaso nuestro padre Abrahán no fue justificado por las obras cuando ofreció a su hijo Isaac sobre el altar?t22 ¿No ves que la fe de Abrahán actuó juntamente con sus obras, y que su fe se perfeccionó por las obras?23 Y se cumplió la Escritura que dice: «Abrahán creyó a Dios, y eso le fue contado por justicia»,t por lo que fue llamado «amigo de Dios».t24 Como pueden ver, podemos ser justificados por las obras, y no solamente por la fe.25 Lo mismo sucedió con Rajab, la prostituta. ¿Acaso no fue justificada por las obras, cuando hospedó a los mensajeros y los ayudó a escapar por otro camino?t26 Pues así como el cuerpo está muerto si no tiene espíritu, también la fe está muerta si no tiene obras.

Warning against Having //Favorites

1 My friends, if you have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, you won't treat some people better than others. 2 Suppose a rich person wearing fancy clothes and a gold ring comes to one of your meetings. And suppose a poor person dressed in worn-out clothes also comes. 3 You must not give the best seat to the one in fancy clothes and tell the one who is poor to stand at the side or sit on the floor.

4 This is the same as saying that some people are better than others, and you would be acting like a crooked judge.
5 My dear friends, pay attention. God has given a lot of faith to the poor people in this world. God has also promised them a share in his kingdom that he will give to everyone who loves him. 6 You mistreat the poor. But isn't it the rich who boss you around and drag you off to court?

7 Aren't they the ones who make fun of your Lord?
8  t You will do all right, if you obey the most important lawt in the Scriptures. It is the law that commands us to love others as much as we love ourselves.

9 But if you treat some people better than others, you have done wrong, and the Scriptures teach that you have sinned.
10  t If you obey every law except one, you are still guilty of breaking them all.

11 t The same God who told us to be faithful in marriage also told us not to murder. So even if you are faithful in marriage, but murder someone, you still have broken God's Law.
12 Speak and act like people who will be judged by the law that sets us free.

13 Do this, because on the day of judgment there will be no pity for those who have not had pity on others. But even in judgment, God is merciful!t

Faith and Works

17 Faith that doesn't lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!

18 Suppose someone disagrees and says, “It is possible to have faith without doing kind deeds.”
I would answer, “Prove that you have faith without doing kind deeds, and I will prove that I have faith by doing them.”

19 You surely believe there is only one God. That's fine. Even demons believe this, and it makes them shake with fear.
20 Does some stupid person want proof that faith without deeds is useless? 21 t Well, our ancestor Abraham pleased God by putting his son Isaac on the altar to sacrifice him. 22 Now you see how Abraham's faith and deeds worked together. He proved his faith was real by what he did.

23 t This is what the Scriptures mean by saying, “Abraham had faith in God, and God accepted him.” That's how Abraham became God's friend.
24 You can now see that we please God by what we do and not only by what we believe.

25 t For example, Rahab had been a prostitute. But she pleased God when she welcomed the spies and sent them home by another way.
26 Anyone who doesn't breathe is dead, and faith that doesn't do anything is just as dead!
