ตักเตือนไม่ให้ลำเอียง
1 พี่น้องของข้าพเจ้า ในเมื่อพวกท่านมีความเชื่อในพระเยซูคริสต์ องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าแห่งศักดิ์ศรีของเรานั้น ก็จงอย่าลำเอียง 2 เพราะว่าถ้ามีคนหนึ่งสวมแหวนทองคำและแต่งตัวดีเข้ามาในที่ประชุมของท่านทั้งหลาย และมีคนจนคนหนึ่งแต่งตัวซอมซ่อเข้ามาด้วย 3 และท่านสนใจแต่คนที่แต่งตัวด้วยเสื้อผ้าอย่างดีและกล่าวกับเขาว่า “ขอเชิญนั่งที่นี่” ขณะเดียวกันท่านก็พูดกับคนจนนั้นว่า “ยืนอยู่ตรงนั้นแหละ” หรือ“มานั่งที่พื้นแทบเท้าเรา” 4 พวกท่านก็แบ่งชั้นวรรณะและตัดสินด้วยความคิดที่ชั่วร้ายไม่ใช่หรือ? 5 จงฟัง พี่น้องที่รักของข้าพเจ้า พระเจ้าทรงเลือกคนยากจนในโลกนี้ให้เป็นคนมั่งมีในความเชื่อและเป็นผู้รับมรดกในอาณาจักรที่พระองค์ทรงสัญญาไว้กับผู้ที่รักพระองค์ไม่ใช่หรือ? 6 แต่พวกท่านกลับดูถูกคนจน พวกคนมั่งมีไม่ใช่หรือที่กดขี่ข่มเหงท่าน? และพวกเขาไม่ใช่หรือที่ลากตัวท่านไปขึ้นศาล? 7 พวกเขาไม่ใช่หรือที่หมิ่นประมาทพระนามประเสริฐที่ใช้เรียกพวกท่าน?
8 ถ้าพวกท่านปฏิบัติตามธรรมบัญญัติของพระเจ้าtอย่างแท้จริงตามพระคัมภีร์ที่ว่า “จงรักเพื่อนบ้านเหมือนรักตนเอง” t พวกท่านก็ทำดี 9 แต่ถ้าพวกท่านลำเอียง ท่านก็ทำบาป และถูกตัดสินว่าเป็นผู้ละเมิดโดยธรรมบัญญัติ 10 เพราะว่าใครที่รักษาธรรมบัญญัติทั้งหมด แต่ผิดอยู่ข้อเดียว คนนั้นก็ทำผิดธรรมบัญญัติทั้งหมด 11 เพราะว่าพระองค์ผู้ตรัสว่า “ห้ามล่วงประเวณีผัวเมียเขา” t ก็ตรัสไว้ด้วยว่า “ห้ามฆ่าคน” t แม้ท่านไม่ได้ล่วงประเวณีแต่ได้ฆ่าคน ท่านก็เป็นผู้ละเมิดธรรมบัญญัติ 12 เช่นนั้นแหละ พวกท่านจงพูดและทำเหมือนอย่างคนที่จะถูกพิพากษาด้วยหลักเกณฑ์แห่งเสรีภาพ 13 เพราะว่าการพิพากษาย่อมไม่เมตตาต่อคนที่ไม่แสดงความเมตตา ความเมตตาย่อมมีชัยเหนือการพิพากษา
ความเชื่อและการประพฤติ
14 พี่น้องของข้าพเจ้า แม้ใครจะกล่าวว่าตนมีความเชื่อ แต่ไม่ได้ประพฤติตามจะมีประโยชน์อะไร? ความเชื่อนั้นจะช่วยให้เขารอดได้หรือ? 15 ถ้าพี่น้องชายหรือหญิงคนไหนขาดแคลนเสื้อผ้าและอาหารประจำวัน 16 แล้วมีใครในพวกท่านกล่าวกับเขาทั้งหลายว่า “ขอให้กลับไปอย่างเป็นสุข ให้อบอุ่น และอิ่มหนำสำราญเถิด” แต่ไม่ได้ให้สิ่งจำเป็นฝ่ายกายแก่พวกเขา จะมีประโยชน์อะไร? 17 ทำนองเดียวกัน ลำพังความเชื่อ ถ้าไม่มีการปฏิบัติ ก็เป็นสิ่งที่ตายแล้ว
18 แต่บางคนจะกล่าวว่า “ท่านมีความเชื่อและข้าพเจ้ามีการประพฤติ” จงแสดงให้ข้าพเจ้าเห็นความเชื่อของท่านโดยไม่มีการประพฤติซิ แล้วข้าพเจ้าจะแสดงให้ท่านเห็นความเชื่อของข้าพเจ้าโดยการประพฤติ 19 ท่านเชื่อว่าพระเจ้ามีเพียงองค์เดียว นั่นก็ดี แม้พวกผีก็เชื่อและกลัวจนตัวสั่น 20 คนโฉดเขลาเอ๋ย ท่านต้องการให้พิสูจน์ว่าความเชื่อที่ไม่มีการประพฤตินั้นไร้ผลหรือ? 21 อับราฮัมบรรพบุรุษของเรา ถวายอิสอัคบุตรของท่านบนแท่นบูชา จึงถูกชำระให้ชอบธรรมเพราะการประพฤติไม่ใช่หรือ?t 22 ท่านก็เห็นแล้วว่า ความเชื่อนั้นทำงานควบคู่กับการประพฤติของเขา และความเชื่อก็สมบูรณ์โดยการประพฤตินั้น 23 และพระคัมภีร์ก็สำเร็จตามที่กล่าวไว้ว่า“อับราฮัมเชื่อพระเจ้า และพระองค์ทรงถือว่าเขาชอบธรรมt และเขาได้ชื่อว่าเป็นสหายของพระเจ้า” t 24 พวกท่านก็เห็นแล้วว่า คนหนึ่งคนใดจะถูกชำระให้ชอบธรรมได้ก็เพราะการประพฤติ และไม่ใช่เพราะความเชื่อเพียงอย่างเดียว 25 เช่นเดียวกัน ราหับหญิงโสเภณีก็ถูกชำระให้ชอบธรรมเพราะการประพฤติไม่ใช่หรือ? เมื่อนางได้ต้อนรับพวกผู้สอดแนม และส่งเขาทั้งหลายไปโดยทางอื่นt 26 กายที่ปราศจากจิตวิญญาณนั้นตายแล้วอย่างไร ความเชื่อที่ปราศจากการประพฤติก็ตายแล้วอย่างนั้น
James 2
1 My brethren, hold not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.2 For if there come into your synagogue a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, and there come in also a poor man in vile clothing;3 and ye have regard to him that weareth the fine clothing, and say, Sit thou here in a good place; and ye say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool;4 Do ye not make distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?5 Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him?6 But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats?7 Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which ye are called?8 Howbeit if ye fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:9 but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is become guilty of all.11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou dost not commit adultery, but killest, thou art become a transgressor of the law.12 So speak ye, and so do, as men that are to be judged by a law of liberty.13 For judgment is without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.14 What doth it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have not works? can that faith save him?15 If a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food,16 and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit?17 Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself.18 Yea, a man will say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith apart from thy works, and I by my works will show thee my faith.19 Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well: the demons also believe, and shudder.20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith apart from works is barren?21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son upon the altar?22 Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect;23 and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness; and he was called the friend of God.24 Ye see that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.25 And in like manner was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
