II.— CUESTIONES CONCRETAS DE VIDA CRISTIANA (3,1—4,10)
El poder de la lengua
1 Hermanos míos, no ambicionen todos el llegar a ser maestrost; deben saber que nosotros, los maestros, seremos juzgados con mayor severidad.t 2 Todos, en efecto, pecamos con frecuencia. Ahora bien, quien no sufre ningún desliz al hablar, es persona cabal, capaz de mantener a raya todo su cuerpo.t t 3 Y si no, vean cómo conseguimos que nos obedezcan los caballos: poniéndoles un freno en la boca, somos capaces de dirigir todo su cuerpo. 4 Lo mismo los barcos: incluso los más grandes y en momentos de recio temporal, son gobernados a voluntad del piloto por un timón muy pequeño. 5 Así es la lengua: un miembro pequeño, pero de insospechable potencia. ¿No ven también cómo una chispa insignificante es capaz de incendiar un bosque inmenso?
6 Pues bien, la lengua es fuego con una fuerza inmensa para el mal: instalada en medio de nuestros miembros, puede contaminar a la persona entera y, atizada por los poderes del infierno, es capaz de arrasar el curso entero de la existencia.
7 El ser humano ha domado y sigue domando toda clase de fieras, aves, reptiles y animales marinos. 8 Sin embargo, es incapaz de domeñar su lengua, que es incontrolable, dañina y está repleta de veneno mortal.t 9 Con ella bendecimos a nuestro Padre y Señor, y con ella maldecimos a los seres humanos a quienes Dios creó a su propia imagen.t 10 De la misma boca salen bendición y maldiciónt. Pero esto no puede ser así, hermanos míos. 11 ¿Acaso en la fuente sale agua dulce y salobre por el mismo caño?
12 Hermanos míos, ¿puede la higuera dar aceitunas o higos la vid? Pues tampoco lo que es saladot puede producir agua dulce.tVerdadera y falsa sabiduría
13 Si entre ustedes alguien se precia de sabio o inteligente, demuestre con su buena conducta su amabilidad y su sabiduría. 14 Pero si ustedes tienen el corazón lleno de envidia y de ambición, ¿para qué presumir de sabiduría y andar falseando la verdad?t 15 Semejante sabiduría no viene de lo alto, sino que es terrena, carnal, diabólica. 16 Y es que donde hay envidia y ambición, allí reina el desenfreno y la maldad sin límites. 17 En cambio, la sabiduría que viene de lo alto es ante todo pura, pero también pacífica, indulgente, conciliadora, compasiva, fecunda, imparcial y sincera.t 18 Resumiendo: los artífices de la paz siembran en paz, para obtener el fruto de una vida rectat.t

The Power of the Tongue
1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters,t because you know that we will be judged more strictly.t2 For we all stumblet in many ways. If someone does not stumblet in what he says,t he is a perfect individual,t able to control the entire body as well.3 And if we put bits into the mouths of horses to get them to obey us, then we guide their entire bodies.t4 Look at ships too: Though they are so large and driven by harsh winds, they are steered by a tiny rudder wherever the pilot’s inclination directs.5 So too the tongue is a small part of the body,t yet it has great pretensions.t Thinkt how small a flame sets a huge forest ablaze.
6 And the tongue is a fire! The tongue representst the world of wrongdoing among the parts of our bodies. Itt pollutes the entire body and sets fire to the course of human existence – and is set on fire by hell.s
7 For every kind of animal, bird, reptile, and sea creaturet is subdued and has been subdued by humankind.t8 But no human being can subdue the tongue; it is a restlesss evil, full of deadly poison.9 With it we bless the Lords and Father, and with it we curse peoplet made in God’s image.10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. These things should not be so, my brothers and sisters.t11 A spring does not pour out fresh water and bitter water from the same opening, does it?
12 Can a fig tree produce olives, my brothers and sisters,t or a vine produce figs? Neither can a salt water spring produce fresh water.
True Wisdom
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct he should show his works done in the gentleness that wisdom brings.t14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfishness in your hearts, do not boast and tell lies against the truth.15 Sucht wisdom does not comet from above but is earthly, natural,t demonic.16 For where there is jealousy and selfishness, there is disorder and every evil practice.17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating,t full of mercy and good fruit,t impartial, and not hypocritical.t
18 And the fruit that consists of righteousnesst is plantedt in peace amongt those who make peace.
