La lengua
1 Hermanos míos, no haya entre vosotros tantos maestros,t pues ya sabéis que quienes enseñamos seremos juzgados con más severidad. 2 Todos cometemos muchos errores; ahora bien, el que no comete ningún error en lo que dice es un hombre perfecto, capaz también de controlar todo su cuerpo. 3 Cuando ponemos freno en la boca a los caballos, para que nos obedezcan, controlamos todo su cuerpo. 4 Y fijaos también en los barcos: aunque son tan grandes y los vientos que los empujan son fuertes, los pilotos, con un pequeño timón, los guían por donde quieren. 5 Lo mismo pasa con la lengua:t es una parte muy pequeña del cuerpo, pero se cree capaz de grandes cosas. ¡Qué bosque tan grande puede quemarse por causa de un pequeño fuego! 6 Y la lengua es un fuego. Es un mundo de maldad puesto en nuestro cuerpo, que contamina a toda la persona. Está encendido por el propio infierno,t y a su vez hace arder todo el curso de la vida.t 7 El hombre es capaz de dominar toda clase de fieras, aves, serpientes y animales del mar, y los ha dominado;t 8 pero nadie ha podido dominar la lengua. Es un mal que no se deja dominar y que está lleno de veneno mortal.t 9 Con la lengua, lo mismo bendecimos al que es Señor y Padre, que maldecimos a los hombres creados por Dios a su propia imagen.t 10 De la misma boca salen bendiciones y maldiciones. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así. 11 De un mismo manantial no puede brotar a la vez agua dulce y agua amarga.
12 Así como una higuera no puede dar aceitunas ni una vid puede dar higos, tampoco, hermanos míos, puede dar agua dulce un manantial de agua salada.tLa verdadera sabiduría
13 Si entre vosotros hay alguno sabio y entendido, que lo demuestre con su buena conducta, con la humildad que su sabiduría le da. 14 Pero si dejáis que la envidia os amargue el corazón y hacéis las cosas por rivalidad, entonces no tenéis de qué enorgulleceros y estáis faltando a la verdad. 15 Esta sabiduría no es la que procede de Dios, sino que es sabiduría de este mundo, de la mente humana y del propio diablo. 16 Donde hay envidias y rivalidades hay también desorden y toda clase de maldad; 17 en cambio, los que poseen la sabiduría que procede de Dios llevan ante todo una vida pura; y además son pacíficos, bondadosos y dóciles. Son también compasivos, imparciales y sinceros, y hacen el bien. 18 Y los que procuran la paz, siembran en paz para recoger como fruto la justicia.

The Power of the Tongue
1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters,t because you know that we will be judged more strictly.t2 For we all stumblet in many ways. If someone does not stumblet in what he says,t he is a perfect individual,t able to control the entire body as well.3 And if we put bits into the mouths of horses to get them to obey us, then we guide their entire bodies.t4 Look at ships too: Though they are so large and driven by harsh winds, they are steered by a tiny rudder wherever the pilot’s inclination directs.5 So too the tongue is a small part of the body,t yet it has great pretensions.t Thinkt how small a flame sets a huge forest ablaze.
6 And the tongue is a fire! The tongue representst the world of wrongdoing among the parts of our bodies. Itt pollutes the entire body and sets fire to the course of human existence – and is set on fire by hell.s
7 For every kind of animal, bird, reptile, and sea creaturet is subdued and has been subdued by humankind.t8 But no human being can subdue the tongue; it is a restlesss evil, full of deadly poison.9 With it we bless the Lords and Father, and with it we curse peoplet made in God’s image.10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. These things should not be so, my brothers and sisters.t11 A spring does not pour out fresh water and bitter water from the same opening, does it?
12 Can a fig tree produce olives, my brothers and sisters,t or a vine produce figs? Neither can a salt water spring produce fresh water.
True Wisdom
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct he should show his works done in the gentleness that wisdom brings.t14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfishness in your hearts, do not boast and tell lies against the truth.15 Sucht wisdom does not comet from above but is earthly, natural,t demonic.16 For where there is jealousy and selfishness, there is disorder and every evil practice.17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating,t full of mercy and good fruit,t impartial, and not hypocritical.t
18 And the fruit that consists of righteousnesst is plantedt in peace amongt those who make peace.
