ヤコブの手紙 3
三
1 愛する皆さん。 人の欠点をあばくのに、やっきになってはいけません。 自分だって、欠点だらけではありませんか。 たとえば、人よりもすぐれた判断力を持つべき私たち宗教の教師が、もし悪を行なうなら、ほかの人より、はるかにきびしいさばきが下るのは当たり前です。
2 舌を思いどおりコントロールできる人は、すべての点で、自分を完全に制することができる人です。 3 馬を意のままに引き回したい時は、口に、小さなくつわをかけるだけでよいのです。 4 また大きな船も、小さなかじ一つで、どんな嵐の中でも、思いのままに進路を変えることができます。
5 同様に、舌もちっぽけなものですが、使い方を誤ると、途方もなく大きな害を生じます。 小さな火でも、大森林を焼き尽くすのです。 6 舌は炎です。 それは悪のかたまりで、体全体を毒します。 舌には地獄そのものの火が燃えさかり、私たちの人生を、滅びと災いの炎で包み込むのです。
7 人間は、あらゆる獣、鳥、魚、地をはうものをも、思いのままに支配できます。 8 しかし、自分の舌だけは思いどおりにできません。 舌はいつでも、死の毒を吐き出そうと身構えているのです。 9 私たちは、この舌で、ある時は天の父なる神をほめたたえ、またある時は神様に似せて造られた人間をのろいます。 10 つまり、祝福とのろいが、同じ人の口から出ているのです。 愛する皆さん。 こんなことがあっていいでしょうか。 11 同じ泉の水が甘くなったり、苦くなったりするでしょうか。 12 いちじくの木にオリーブの実がなったり、ぶどうの木にいちじくの実がなったりするでしょうか。 もちろん、ありえないことです。 塩水の池から、真水を汲むこともできません。
13 たくさんの善行を施している人は、賢い人です。 しかもその善行を鼻にかけなければ、真の意味での賢さを、身につけていると言えるでしょう。 14 もし自分に、苦々しい思いやねたみや利己心があるとわかれば、決して善人ぶったり、賢さをひけらかしたりしてはいけません。 それは、最もたちの悪いうそをつくことです。 15 ねたみや利己心は、神様からの知恵ではなく、地上のものであり、真理に逆らえとたきつける、悪霊のものです。 16 ねたみや、野心のうず巻くところには、秩序がなく、あらゆる悪がはびこっています。
17 しかし天からの知恵は、第一に純粋であり、おだやかなやさしさに満ちています。 そして、平和を愛し、だれにも礼儀正しくふるまいます。 独善的でなく、人のことばに喜んで耳を傾けます。 また、思いやりと善意にあふれた態度をとります。 それには真心がこもっており、単純率直で、誠実さにあふれています。 18 ほんとうに平和を願う人は、平和の種をまいて、善行の実を刈り取るのです。
James 3
1 Be not many of you teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment.2 For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.3 Now if we put the horses’ bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also.4 Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth.5 So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!6 And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.7 For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind.8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of deadly poison.9 Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God:10 out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.11 Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet water and bitter?12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither can salt water yield sweet.13 Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom.14 But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth.15 This wisdom is not a wisdom that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.16 For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed.17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy.18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.
