La lengua

1 Hermanos en Cristo, no debemos tratar de ser todos maestros, pues bien sabemos que Dios juzgará a los maestros más estrictamente que a los demás.

2 Todos cometemos muchas faltas. ¿Quién, entonces, es una persona madura? Sólo quien es capaz de dominar su lengua y de dominarse a sí mismo.
3 Al caballo podemos dominarlo, y hacer que nos obedezca, si le ponemos un freno en la boca.4 Algo parecido pasa con los barcos. Por grande que sea un barco, y por fuertes que sean los vientos que lo empujan, el navegante puede controlarlo con un timón muy pequeño.

5 Y lo mismo pasa con nuestra lengua. Es una de las partes más pequeñas de nuestro cuerpo, pero es capaz de hacer grandes cosas. ¡Es una llama pequeña que puede incendiar todo un bosque!

6 Las palabras que decimos con nuestra lengua son como el fuego. Nuestra lengua tiene mucho poder para hacer el mal. Puede echar a perder toda nuestra vida, y hacer que nos quememos en el infierno.
7 Podemos dominar toda clase de animales salvajes, de aves, serpientes y animales del mar,

8 pero no hemos podido controlar nuestra lengua ni evitar decir palabras que dañen. La lengua parece un animal salvaje, que nadie puede dominar y que está lleno de veneno mortal.

9-10 Con nuestra lengua podemos bendecir o maldecir. Con ella alabamos a nuestro Dios y Padre, y también insultamos a nuestros semejantes, que Dios hizo parecidos a él mismo. Hermanos, ¡esto no debe ser así!
11 De un mismo pozo no puede salir agua dulce y agua amarga o salada.

12 Tampoco da higos un árbol de aceitunas, ni da uvas un árbol de higos.

La sabiduría que Dios da

13 Si alguno de ustedes es sabio y entendido, demuéstrelo haciendo el bien y portándose con humildad.14 Pero si ustedes lo hacen todo por envidia o por celos, vivirán tristes y amargados; no tendrán nada de qué sentirse orgullosos, y faltarán a la verdad.15 Porque esa sabiduría no viene de Dios, sino que es de este mundo y del demonio,

16 y produce celos, peleas, problemas y todo tipo de maldad.

17 En cambio, los que tienen la sabiduría que viene de Dios, no hacen lo malo; al contrario, buscan la paz, son obedientes y amables con los demás, se compadecen de los que sufren, y siempre hacen lo bueno; tratan a todos de la misma manera, y son verdaderos cristianos.

18 A los que buscan la paz entre las personas, Dios los premiará dándoles paz y justicia.

James 3

1 Be not many of you teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment.2 For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.3 Now if we put the horses’ bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also.4 Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth.5 So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!6 And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.7 For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind.8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of deadly poison.9 Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God:10 out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.11 Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet water and bitter?12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither can salt water yield sweet.13 Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom.14 But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth.15 This wisdom is not a wisdom that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.16 For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed.17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy.18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.
