Cuidado com a língua

1 Meus irmãos, não deve haver entre vocês muitos que queiram ser professores, pois vocês sabem que nós, os que ensinamos, seremos julgados com mais rigor.2 Eu os estou prevenindo porque todos nós pecamos freqüentemente. Se alguém não peca no falar é uma pessoa perfeita, capaz de controlar também todo o seu corpo.3 Nós colocamos freios na boca dos cavalos para que eles nos obedeçam e assim possamos dirigir o corpo inteiro deles.4 Observem também os navios que, sendo tão grandes e empurrados por ventos fortes, são dirigidos por um pequeníssimo leme e vão para onde quer que o piloto deseje.5 Assim também a língua, que é um órgão pequeno, se gaba de ter feito grandes coisas. Vejam como uma floresta inteira pode ser incendiada por uma pequena chama.6 Ora, a língua é fogo; é o mundo com todas as suas maldades. A língua está situada entre as partes do nosso corpo e contamina o corpo inteiro. Ela mesma é colocada em chamas pelo inferno e também põe em chamas a carreira da existência humana.7 A humanidade pode domar toda a espécie de animais, de aves, de répteis e de seres marinhos e, na verdade, tem feito isso.8 A língua, porém, nenhum dos homens é capaz de domar. Ela é selvagem e má, carregada de veneno mortal.9 Com ela nós louvamos ao Senhor e Pai e com ela amaldiçoamos as pessoas que foram criadas à imagem de Deus.10 De uma só boca procedem louvor e maldição. Meus irmãos, estas coisas não devem ser assim.11 Pode por acaso uma mesma fonte jorrar água doce e água salgada?

12 Meus irmãos, pode por acaso a figueira produzir azeitonas, ou a videira figos? Claro que não! Da mesma forma, nem a fonte de água salgada pode dar água doce.

A verdadeira sabedoria

13 Se há alguém entre vocês que seja sábio e entendido, então que essa pessoa mostre, por meio do seu comportamento, que age com a mansidão que a sabedoria lhe dá.14 Porém, se há inveja, amargura e egoísmo em seus corações, não se gabem da sua sabedoria, pois se vocês se gabarem estarão mentindo contra a verdade.15 Esta não é a sabedoria que desce lá do céu. Pelo contrário, ela é daqui da terra e, por isso, não é espiritual, mas do Diabo.16 Pois onde existe inveja e egoísmo, aí existe confusão e toda espécie de coisas ruins.17 Mas a sabedoria que desce lá do céu é, acima de tudo, pura; depois pacífica, bondosa e amigável. Ela é cheia de misericórdia, produz uma colheita de boas obras e é também imparcial e sincera.

18 A colheita produzida pelas sementes da justiça virá para aqueles que promovem a paz, uma vez que a semente é plantada num clima de paz.

The Tongue Is a Fire

1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.3 Now if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.4 Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.

5 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.
See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!6 And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.7 For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.11 Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

Wisdom from Above

13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.18 And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
