1 Lời của Giê-rê-mi, con trai Hinh-kia, một trong các thầy tế lễ ở A-na-tốt, xứ Bên-gia-min.2 Có lời Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng người trong đời Giô-si-a, con trai A-môn, vua Giu-đa, năm thứ mười ba đời vua ấy;3 lại có phán cùng người trong đời Giê-hô-gia-kim, con trai Giô-si-a, vua Giu-đa, cho đến cuối năm thứ mười một đời vua Sê-đê-kia, con trai Giô-si-a, vua Giu-đa, tức là năm mà Giê-ru-sa-lem bị bắt làm phu tù trong tháng thứ năm.4 Có lời Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng tôi như vầy: Trước khi tạo nên ngươi trong lòng mẹ, ta đã biết ngươi rồi;5 trước khi ngươi sanh ra, ta đã biệt riêng ngươi, lập ngươi làm kẻ tiên tri cho các nước.6 Tôi thưa rằng: Ôi! hỡi Chúa Giê-hô-va, nầy tôi chẳng biết nói chi, vì tôi là con trẻ.7 Nhưng Đức Giê-hô-va lại phán: Chớ nói: Tôi là con trẻ; vì ngươi sẽ đi khắp nơi nào ta sai ngươi đi, và sẽ nói mọi điều ta truyền cho nói.8 Đừng sợ vì cớ chúng nó; vì ta ở với ngươi đặng giải cứu ngươi, Đức Giê-hô-va phán vậy.9 Đoạn, Đức Giê-hô-va giang tay rờ miệng tôi. Đức Giê-hô-va lại phán cùng tôi rằng: Nầy, ta đã đặt những lời ta trong miệng ngươi.10 Hãy xem, ngày nay ta đã lập ngươi trên các dân các nước, đặng ngươi hoặc nhổ, hoặc phá, hoặc diệt, hoặc đổ, hoặc dựng, hoặc trồng.11 Lại có lời Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng tôi rằng: Hỡi Giê-rê-mi, ngươi thấy gì? Tôi thưa rằng: Tôi thấy một gậy bằng cây hạnh.12 Đức Giê-hô-va bèn phán: Ngươi thấy phải đó; ta sẽ tỉnh thức, giữ lời phán ta đặng làm trọn.13 Lại có lời Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng tôi lần thứ hai mà rằng: Ngươi thấy gì? Tôi thưa: Tôi thấy một nồi nước sôi từ phương bắc bắn ra.14 Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Ấy là hoạn nạn từ phương bắc sẽ giáng cho hết thảy dân cư đất nầy.15 Vậy, ta sẽ gọi mọi họ hàng của các nước phương bắc, Đức Giê-hô-va phán vậy. Chúng nó sẽ đến, và ai nấy đặt ngôi mình nơi cửa thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, vây đánh các vách thành ấy, và các thành của Giu-đa.16 Ta sẽ rao sự xét đoán ta nghịch cùng chúng nó, vì điều ác chúng nó đã làm; bởi chưng chúng nó đã lìa bỏ ta, đốt hương cho các thần khác, và thờ lạy việc tay mình làm ra.17 Vậy, ngươi hãy thắt lưng, chờ dậy, bảo cho chúng nó mọi sự mà ta truyền cho ngươi. Đừng sợ sệt vì cớ chúng nó, kẻo ta làm cho ngươi sợ sệt trước mặt chúng nó chăng.18 Nầy, ngày nay, ta lập ngươi lên làm thành vững bền, làm cột bằng sắt, làm tường bằng đồng, nghịch cùng cả đất nầy, nghịch cùng các vua Giu-đa, các quan trưởng nó, các thầy tế lễ, và dân trong đất.19 Họ sẽ đánh nhau với ngươi, nhưng không thắng ngươi; vì ta ở cùng ngươi đặng giải cứu ngươi, Đức Giê-hô-va phán vậy.

Jeremiah 1

The Superscription

1 The following is a record of what Jeremiah son of Hilkiah prophesied.t He was one of the priests who lived at Anathoth in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin.2 The Lords began to speak to himt in the thirteenth year that Josiah son of Amon ruled over Judah.

3 The Lord also spoke to him when Jehoiakim son of Josiah ruled over Judah, and he continued to speak to him until the fifth month of the eleventh years that Zedekiah son of Josiah ruled over Judah. That was when the people of Jerusalems were taken into exile.t

Jeremiah’s Call and Commission

4 The Lord said to me,

5 “Before I formed you in your mother’s wombt I chose you.t
Before you were born I set you apart.
I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.”
6 I answered, “Oh, Lord God,ts I reallyt do not know how to speak well enough for that,t for I am too young.”t7 The Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ But got to whomever I send you and say whatever I tell you.8 Do not be afraid of those to whom I send you,t for I will be with you to protectt you,” says the Lord.9 Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I will most assuredly give you the words you are to speak for me.ts

10 Know for certain thatt I hereby give you the authority to announce to nations and kingdoms that they will bet uprooted and torn down, destroyed and demolished, rebuilt and firmly planted.”s

Visions Confirming Jeremiah’s Call and Commission

11 Later the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” I answered, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”

12 Then the Lord said, “You have observed correctly. This meanst I am watching to make sure my threats are carried out.”ts
13 The Lord again asked me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a pot of boiling water; it is tipped toward us from the north.”t14 Then the Lord said, “This meanst destruction will break out from the north on all who live in the land.15 For I will soon summon all the peoples of the kingdoms of the north,” says the Lord. “They will come and their kings will set up their thronest near the entrances of the gates of Jerusalem.s They will attack all the walls surrounding it, and all the towns in Judah.t

16 In this wayt I will pass sentences on the people of Jerusalem and Judaht because of all their wickedness. For they rejected me and offered sacrifices to other gods, worshiping what they made with their own hands.”t
17 “But you, Jeremiah,t get yourself ready!t Go and tell these people everything I instruct you to say. Do not be terrified of them, or I will give you good reason to be terrified of them.t18 I, the Lord,t hereby promise to make yout as strong as a fortified city, an iron pillar, and a bronze wall. You will be able to stand up against all who live int the land, including the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and all the people of the land.

19 They will attack you but they will not be able to overcome you, for I will be with you to rescue you,” says the Lord.
