Geremia 29

1 Or queste son le parole della lettera che il profeta Geremia mandò da Gerusalemme al residuo degli anziani in cattività, ai sacerdoti, ai profeti e a tutto il popolo che Nebucadnetsar avea menato in cattività da Gerusalemme in Babilonia,2 dopo che il re Jeconia, la regina, gli eunuchi, i principi di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, i falegnami e i fabbri furono usciti da Gerusalemme.3 La lettera fu portata per man di Elasa, figliuolo di Shafan, e di Ghemaria, figliuolo di Hilkia, che Sedekia, re di Giuda, mandava a Babilonia da Nebucadnetsar, re di Babilonia. Essa diceva:4 Così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele, a tutti i deportati ch’egli ha fatto menare in cattività da Gerusalemme in Babilonia:5 Fabbricate delle case e abitatele; piantate de’ giardini e mangiatene il frutto;6 prendete delle mogli e generate figliuoli e figliuole; prendete delle mogli per i vostri figliuoli; date marito alle vostre figliuole perché faccian figliuoli e figliuole; e moltiplicate là dove siete, e non diminuite.7 Cercate il bene della città dove io vi ho fatti menare in cattività, e pregate l’Eterno per essa; poiché dal bene d’essa dipende il vostro bene.

8 Poiché così dice l’Eterno degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: I vostri profeti che sono in mezzo a voi e i vostri indovini non v’ingannino, e non date retta ai sogni che fate.9 Giacché quelli vi profetano falsamente nel mio nome; io non li ho mandati, dice l’Eterno.

10 Poiché così parla l’Eterno: Quando settant’anni saranno compiuti per Babilonia, io vi visiterò e manderò ad effetto per voi la mia buona parola, facendovi tornare in questo luogo.11 Poiché io so i pensieri che medito per voi, dice l’Eterno: pensieri di pace e non di male, per darvi un avvenire e una speranza.12 Voi m’invocherete, verrete a pregarmi e io v’esaudirò.13 Voi mi cercherete e mi troverete, perché mi cercherete con tutto il vostro cuore;14 e io mi lascerò trovare da voi, dice l’Eterno, e vi farò tornare dalla vostra cattività; vi raccoglierò di fra tutte le nazioni e da tutti i luoghi dove vi ho cacciati, dice l’Eterno; e vi ricondurrò nel luogo donde vi ho fatti andare in cattività.

15 Voi dite: "L’Eterno ci ha suscitato de’ profeti in Babilonia".16 Ebbene, così parla l’Eterno riguardo al re che siede sul trono di Davide, riguardo a tutto il popolo che abita in questa città, ai vostri fratelli che non sono andati con voi in cattività;17 così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti: Ecco, io manderò contro di loro la spada, la fame, la peste, e li renderò come quegli orribili fichi che non si posson mangiare, tanto sono cattivi.18 E li inseguirò con la spada, con la fame, con la peste; farò sì che saranno agitati fra tutti i regni della terra, e li abbandonerò alla esecrazione, allo stupore, alla derisione e al vituperio fra tutte le nazioni dove li caccerò;19 perché non han dato ascolto alle mie parole, dice l’Eterno, che io ho mandate loro a dire dai miei servitori i profeti del continuo, fin dal mattino; ma essi non han dato ascolto, dice l’Eterno.

20 Ascoltate dunque la parola dell’Eterno, o voi tutti, che io ho mandati in cattività da Gerusalemme in Babilonia!21 Così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele, riguardo ad Achab, figliuolo di Kolaia, e riguardo a Sedekia, figliuolo di Maaseia, che vi profetizzano la menzogna nel mio nome: Ecco, io do costoro in mano di Nebucadnetsar, re di Babilonia, ed ei li metterà a morte davanti agli occhi vostri;22 da essi si trarrà una formula di maledizione fra tutti quei di Giuda che sono in cattività in Babilonia, e si dirà: "L’Eterno ti tratti come Sedekia e come Achab, che il re di Babilonia ha fatti arrostire al fuoco!"23 Perché costoro han fatto delle cose nefande in Israele, han commesso adulterio con le mogli del loro prossimo, e hanno pronunziato in mio nome parole di menzogna; il che io non avevo loro comandato. Io stesso lo so, e ne son testimone, dice l’Eterno.

24 E quanto a Scemaia il Nehelamita, gli parlerai in questo modo:25 Così dice l’Eterno degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: Tu hai mandato in tuo nome una lettera a tutto il popolo che è in Gerusalemme, a Sofonia, figliuolo di Maaseia il sacerdote, e a tutti i sacerdoti, per dire:26 "L’Eterno ti ha costituito sacerdote in luogo del sacerdote Jehoiada, perché vi siano nella casa dell’Eterno de’ sovrintendenti per sorvegliare ogni uomo che è pazzo e che fa il profeta, e perché tu lo metta ne’ ceppi e ai ferri.27 E ora perché non reprimi tu Geremia d’Anatoth che fa il profeta tra voi,28 e ci ha perfino mandato a dire a Babilonia: La cattività sarà lunga; fabbricate delle case e abitatele; piantate de’ giardini e mangiatene il frutto?"29 Or il sacerdote Sofonia lesse questa lettera in presenza del profeta Geremia.

30 E la parola dell’Eterno fu rivolta a Geremia, dicendo:31 Manda a dire a tutti quelli che sono in cattività: Così parla l’Eterno riguardo a Scemaia il Nehelamita: Poiché Scemaia vi ha profetato, benché io non l’abbia mandato, e vi ha fatto confidare nella menzogna,32 così parla l’Eterno: Ecco, io punirò Scemaia il Nehelamita, e la sua progenie; non vi sarà alcuno de’ suoi discendenti che abiti in mezzo a questo popolo, ed egli non vedrà il bene che io farò al mio popolo, dice l’Eterno; poich’egli ha parlato di ribellione contro l’Eterno.

Jeremiah’s Letter to the Exiles

1 The prophet Jeremiah sent a letter to the exiles Nebuchadnezzar had carried off from Jerusalems to Babylon. It was addressed to the elders who were left among the exiles, to the priests, to the prophets, and to all the other people who were exiled in Babylon.t2 He sent it after King Jeconiah, the queen mother, the palace officials,t the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metal workers had been exiled from Jerusalem.s

3 He sent it with Elasah son of Shaphans and Gemariah son of Hilkiah.s King Zedekiah of Judah had sent these men to Babylon to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.s The letter said:
4 “The Lord God of Israel who rules over allts says to all those he sentts into exile to Babylon from Jerusalem,s5 ‘Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce.6 Marry and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons and allow your daughters get married so that they too can have sons and daughters. Grow in number; do not dwindle away.

7 Work to see that the city where I sent you as exiles enjoys peace and prosperity. Pray to the Lord for it. For as it prospers you will prosper.’
8 “For the Lord God of Israel who rules over allts says, ‘Do not let the prophets or those among you who claim to be able to predict the future by divinations deceive you. And do not pay any attention to the dreams that you are encouraging them to dream.

9 They are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so.ts But I did not send them. I, the Lord, affirm it!’t
10 “For the Lord says, ‘Only when the seventy years of Babylonian rules are over will I again take up consideration for you.t Then I will fulfill my gracious promise to you and restoret you to your homeland.ts11 For I know what I have planned for you,’ says the Lord.t ‘I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give yout a future filled with hope.t12 When you call out to me and come to me in prayer,t I will hear your prayers.t13 When you seek me in prayer and worship, you will find me available to you. If you seek me with all your heart and soul,t

14 I will make myself available to you,’t says the Lord.t ‘Then I will reverse your plightt and will regather you from all the nations and all the places where I have exiled you,’ says the Lord.t ‘I will bring you back to the place from which I exiled you.’
15 “You say, ‘The Lord has raised up prophets of good newst for us here in Babylon.’16 But just listen to what the Lord has to say aboutts the king who occupies David’s throne and all your fellow countrymen who are still living in this city of Jerusalemt and were not carried off into exile with you.17 The Lord who rules over allt says, ‘I will bring war,t starvation, and disease on them. I will treat them like figs that are so rottents they cannot be eaten.18 I will chase after them with war,t starvation, and disease. I will make all the kingdoms of the earth horrified at what happens to them. I will make them examples of those who are cursed, objects of horror, hissing scorn, and ridicule among all the nations where I exile them.19 For they have not paid attention to what I said to them through my servants the prophets whom I sent to them over and over again,’t says the Lord.t ‘And you exilest have not paid any attention to them either,’ says the Lord.t

20 ‘So pay attention to what I, the Lord, have said,t all you exiles whom I have sent to Babylon from Jerusalem.’
21 “The Lord God of Israel who rules over allts also has something to say about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so.t ‘I will hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and he will execute them before your very eyes.22 And all the exiles of Judah who are in Babylon will use them as examples when they put a curse on anyone. They will say, “May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab whom the king of Babylon roasted to death in the fire!”s

23 This will happen to them because they have done what is shamefult in Israel. They have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have spoken lies while claiming my authority.t They have spoken words that I did not command them to speak. I know what they have done. I have been a witness to it,’ says the Lord.”t

A Response to the Letter and a Subsequent Letter

24 The Lord told Jeremiah, “Tellt Shemaiah the Nehelamitet25 that the Lord God of Israel who rules over allts has a message for him.t Tell him,s ‘On your own initiativet you sent a lettert to the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiahs and to all the other priests and to all the people in Jerusalem.s In your letter you said to Zephaniah,t26 “The Lord has made you priest in place of Jehoiada.t He has put you in charge in the Lord’s temple of controllings any lunatics who pretends to be a prophet.t And it is your duty to put any such person in the stockst with an iron collar around his neck.t27 You should have reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth who is pretending to be a prophet among you!t

28 For he has even sent a message to us here in Babylon. He wrote and told us,t “You will be there a long time. Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce.”’”s
29 Zephaniah the priest read that letter to the prophet Jeremiah.t30 Then the Lord spoke to Jeremiah.31 “Send a message to all the exiles in Babylon. Tell them, ‘The Lord has spoken about Shemaiah the Nehelamite. “Shemaiah has spoken to you as a prophet even though I did not send him. He is making you trust in a lie.t

32 Because he has done this,”t the Lord says, “I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his whole family. There will not be any of them left to experience the good things that I will do for my people. I, the Lord, affirm it! For he counseled rebellion against the Lord.”’”s
