Jeremías 29

1 Estas son las palabras de la carta que el profeta Jeremías envió desde Jerusalén al resto de los ancianos del destierro, a los sacerdotes, a los profetas y a todo el pueblo que Nabucodonosor había llevado al destierro de Jerusalén a Babilonia.2 ( Esto sucedió después de salir de Jerusalén el rey Jeconías y la reina madre, los oficiales de la corte, los príncipes de Judá y de Jerusalén, los artífices y los herreros.)3  La carta fue enviada por mano de Elasa, hijo de Safán, y de Gemarías, hijo de Hilcías, a quienes Sedequías, rey de Judá, envió a Babilonia, a Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, diciendo:4 Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, a todos los desterrados que envié al destierro de Jerusalén a Babilonia:5 "Edificad casas y habitad las, plantad huertos y comed su fruto.6 "Tomad mujeres y engendrad hijos e hijas, tomad mujeres para vuestros hijos y dad vuestras hijas a maridos para que den a luz hijos e hijas, y multiplicaos allí y no disminuyáis.7 "Y buscad el bienestar de la ciudad adonde os he desterrado, y rogad al Señor por ella; porque en su bienestar tendréis bienestar."8 Porque así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: "No os engañen vuestros profetas que están en medio de vosotros, ni vuestros adivinos, ni escuchéis los sueños que sueñan.9 "Porque os profetizan falsamente en mi nombre; no los he enviado"--declara el Señor.10 Pues así dice el Señor: "Cuando se le hayan cumplido a Babilonia setenta años, yo os visitaré y cumpliré mi buena palabra de haceros volver a este lugar.11 "Porque yo sé los planes que tengo para vosotros"--declara el Señor-- "planes de bienestar y no de calamidad, para daros un futuro y una esperanza.12 "Me invocaréis, y vendréis a rogarme, y yo os escucharé.13 "Me buscaréis y me encontraréis, cuando me busquéis de todo corazón.

14 "Me dejaré hallar de vosotros"--declara el Señor-- "y restauraré vuestro bienestar y os reuniré de todas las naciones y de todos los lugares adonde os expulsé"--declara el Señor-- "y os traeré de nuevo al lugar de donde os envié al destierro."
15 Por cuanto habéis dicho: "El Señor nos ha levantado profetas en Babilonia"16 (pues así dice el Señor acerca del rey que se sienta sobre el trono de David, y acerca de todo el pueblo que habita en esta ciudad, vuestros hermanos que no fueron con vosotros al destierro),17 así dice el Señor de los ejércitos: "He aquí, yo envío contra ellos la espada, el hambre y la pestilencia, y los pondré como higos reventados que de podridos no se pueden comer.18 "Los perseguiré con la espada, con el hambre y con la pestilencia, y los haré motivo de espanto para todos los reinos de la tierra, para que sean maldición, horror, burla y oprobio entre todas las naciones adonde los he arrojado,19 porque no han escuchado mis palabras"--declara el Señor-- "que les envié repetidas veces por medio de mis siervos los profetas; pero no escuchasteis"--declara el Señor.

20 Oíd, pues, la palabra del Señor, vosotros todos los desterrados, a quienes he enviado de Jerusalén a Babilonia.
21 Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, acerca de Acab, hijo de Colaías, y acerca de Sedequías, hijo de Maasías, que os profetizan mentira en mi nombre: "He aquí, los entregaré en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y él los matará delante de vuestros ojos.22 "Y de ellos será tomada esta maldición por todos los desterrados de Judá que están en Babilonia, diciendo: 'Que el Señor te haga como a Sedequías y como a Acab, a quienes el rey de Babilonia asó al fuego.'

23 "Porque obraron neciamente en Israel, cometieron adulterio con las mujeres de sus prójimos y hablaron en mi nombre palabras falsas que no les mandé. Yo soy el que sabe y soy testigo--declara el Señor."
24 Y a Semaías el nehelamita hablarás, diciendo:25 Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: "Por cuanto has enviado cartas en tu nombre a todo el pueblo que está en Jerusalén, y al sacerdote Sofonías, hijo de Maasías, y a todos los sacerdotes, diciendo a Sofonías :26 'El Señor te ha puesto por sacerdote en lugar del sacerdote Joiada, para estar encargado en la casa del Señor de todo demente que profetice, a fin de que lo pongas en el cepo y la argolla.27 'Pues entonces ¿por qué no has reprendido a Jeremías de Anatot que os profetiza?

28 'Porque él nos ha enviado un mensaje a Babilonia, diciendo: " El destierro será largo; edificad casas y habitad las, plantad huertos y comed su fruto."'"
29 Y el sacerdote Sofonías leyó esta carta a oídos del profeta Jeremías.30 Entonces vino la palabra del Señor a Jeremías, diciendo:31 Envía un mensaje a todos los desterrados, diciendo: "Así dice el Señor acerca de Semaías el nehelamita: 'Por cuanto Semaías os ha profetizado sin que yo lo haya enviado, y os ha hecho confiar en una mentira',32 por tanto, así dice el Señor: 'He aquí, voy a castigar a Semaías el nehelamita y a su descendencia; no tendrá a nadie que habite en medio de este pueblo, ni verá el bien que voy a hacer a mi pueblo'--declara el Señor-- 'porque ha predicado rebelión contra el Señor.'"

Jeremiah’s Letter to the Exiles

1 The prophet Jeremiah sent a letter to the exiles Nebuchadnezzar had carried off from Jerusalems to Babylon. It was addressed to the elders who were left among the exiles, to the priests, to the prophets, and to all the other people who were exiled in Babylon.t2 He sent it after King Jeconiah, the queen mother, the palace officials,t the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metal workers had been exiled from Jerusalem.s

3 He sent it with Elasah son of Shaphans and Gemariah son of Hilkiah.s King Zedekiah of Judah had sent these men to Babylon to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.s The letter said:
4 “The Lord God of Israel who rules over allts says to all those he sentts into exile to Babylon from Jerusalem,s5 ‘Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce.6 Marry and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons and allow your daughters get married so that they too can have sons and daughters. Grow in number; do not dwindle away.

7 Work to see that the city where I sent you as exiles enjoys peace and prosperity. Pray to the Lord for it. For as it prospers you will prosper.’
8 “For the Lord God of Israel who rules over allts says, ‘Do not let the prophets or those among you who claim to be able to predict the future by divinations deceive you. And do not pay any attention to the dreams that you are encouraging them to dream.

9 They are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so.ts But I did not send them. I, the Lord, affirm it!’t
10 “For the Lord says, ‘Only when the seventy years of Babylonian rules are over will I again take up consideration for you.t Then I will fulfill my gracious promise to you and restoret you to your homeland.ts11 For I know what I have planned for you,’ says the Lord.t ‘I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give yout a future filled with hope.t12 When you call out to me and come to me in prayer,t I will hear your prayers.t13 When you seek me in prayer and worship, you will find me available to you. If you seek me with all your heart and soul,t

14 I will make myself available to you,’t says the Lord.t ‘Then I will reverse your plightt and will regather you from all the nations and all the places where I have exiled you,’ says the Lord.t ‘I will bring you back to the place from which I exiled you.’
15 “You say, ‘The Lord has raised up prophets of good newst for us here in Babylon.’16 But just listen to what the Lord has to say aboutts the king who occupies David’s throne and all your fellow countrymen who are still living in this city of Jerusalemt and were not carried off into exile with you.17 The Lord who rules over allt says, ‘I will bring war,t starvation, and disease on them. I will treat them like figs that are so rottents they cannot be eaten.18 I will chase after them with war,t starvation, and disease. I will make all the kingdoms of the earth horrified at what happens to them. I will make them examples of those who are cursed, objects of horror, hissing scorn, and ridicule among all the nations where I exile them.19 For they have not paid attention to what I said to them through my servants the prophets whom I sent to them over and over again,’t says the Lord.t ‘And you exilest have not paid any attention to them either,’ says the Lord.t

20 ‘So pay attention to what I, the Lord, have said,t all you exiles whom I have sent to Babylon from Jerusalem.’
21 “The Lord God of Israel who rules over allts also has something to say about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so.t ‘I will hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and he will execute them before your very eyes.22 And all the exiles of Judah who are in Babylon will use them as examples when they put a curse on anyone. They will say, “May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab whom the king of Babylon roasted to death in the fire!”s

23 This will happen to them because they have done what is shamefult in Israel. They have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have spoken lies while claiming my authority.t They have spoken words that I did not command them to speak. I know what they have done. I have been a witness to it,’ says the Lord.”t

A Response to the Letter and a Subsequent Letter

24 The Lord told Jeremiah, “Tellt Shemaiah the Nehelamitet25 that the Lord God of Israel who rules over allts has a message for him.t Tell him,s ‘On your own initiativet you sent a lettert to the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiahs and to all the other priests and to all the people in Jerusalem.s In your letter you said to Zephaniah,t26 “The Lord has made you priest in place of Jehoiada.t He has put you in charge in the Lord’s temple of controllings any lunatics who pretends to be a prophet.t And it is your duty to put any such person in the stockst with an iron collar around his neck.t27 You should have reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth who is pretending to be a prophet among you!t

28 For he has even sent a message to us here in Babylon. He wrote and told us,t “You will be there a long time. Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce.”’”s
29 Zephaniah the priest read that letter to the prophet Jeremiah.t30 Then the Lord spoke to Jeremiah.31 “Send a message to all the exiles in Babylon. Tell them, ‘The Lord has spoken about Shemaiah the Nehelamite. “Shemaiah has spoken to you as a prophet even though I did not send him. He is making you trust in a lie.t

32 Because he has done this,”t the Lord says, “I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his whole family. There will not be any of them left to experience the good things that I will do for my people. I, the Lord, affirm it! For he counseled rebellion against the Lord.”’”s
