1 Nầy là lời thơ của tiên tri Giê-rê-mi từ thành Giê-ru-sa-lem gởi cho các trưởng lão hiện còn bị phu tù, cùng cho các thầy tế lễ, các tiên tri và cả dân mà vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa đã bắt từ Giê-ru-sa-lem điệu về Ba-by-lôn,2 sau khi vua Giê-cô-nia, thái hậu, hoạn quan, các quan trưởng của Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem, thợ nghề và thợ rèn đã đi khỏi Giê-ru-sa-lem rồi.3 Thơ nầy gởi bởi tay Ê-lê-a-sa, con trai Sa-phan, và Ghê-ma-ria, con trai Hinh-kia, là hai người mà Sê-đê-kia, vua Giu-đa, sai sang Ba-by-lôn, chầu Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, vua Ba-by-lôn. Thơ như sau nầy:4 Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, phán cùng những kẻ mà ta đã khiến bị bắt làm phu tù từ Giê-ru-sa-lem qua Ba-by-lôn như vầy:5 Hãy xây nhà và ở; hãy trồng vườn và ăn trái;6 hãy lấy vợ, đẻ con trai và con gái; hãy lấy vợ cho con trai, gả chồng cho con gái, hầu cho chúng nó đẻ ra con trai và con gái. Số các ngươi khá thêm nhiều ra ở đó và đừng kém đi.7 Hãy tìm sự bình an cho thành mà ta đã khiến các ngươi bị đày đến làm phu tù, hãy vì nó cầu nguyện Đức Giê-hô-va; vì sự bình an các ngươi nhờ sự bình an của nó.8 Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, phán như vầy: Chớ để cho các tiên tri ở trong vòng các ngươi và các thầy bói lừa dối các ngươi; cũng chớ nghe những điềm chiêm bao mà các ngươi thấy.9 Vì chúng nó nhân danh ta mà nói tiên tri giả dối cho các ngươi. Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Ta chẳng hề sai chúng nó.10 Vả, Đức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Khi bảy mươi năm sẽ mãn cho Ba-by-lôn, ta sẽ thăm viếng các ngươi, sẽ làm trọn lời tốt lành cho các ngươi, khiến các ngươi trở về đất nầy.11 Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Vì ta biết ý tưởng ta nghĩ đối cùng các ngươi, là ý tưởng bình an, không phải tai họa, để cho các ngươi được sự trông cậy trong lúc cuối cùng của mình.12 Bấy giờ các ngươi sẽ kêu cầu ta, sẽ đi và cầu nguyện ta, và ta sẽ nhậm lời.13 Các ngươi sẽ tìm ta, và gặp được, khi các ngươi tìm kiếm ta hết lòng.14 Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Ta sẽ cho các ngươi tìm được ta, và sẽ đem những phu tù các ngươi trở về. Đức Giê-hô-va phán: ta sẽ nhóm các ngươi lại từ mọi nước và mọi nơi mà ta đã đuổi các ngươi đến, và sẽ đem các ngươi về trong đất mà ta đã khiến các ngươi bị đày đi khỏi đó.15 Các ngươi nói rằng: Đức Giê-hô-va đã dấy lên các tiên tri cho chúng ta tại Ba-by-lôn!16 Cho nên, Đức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy về vua đang ngồi trên ngai Đa-vít và dân cư thành nầy, cũng phán về anh em các ngươi, là những kẻ không bị đem đi làm phu tù với các ngươi.17 Vậy, nầy là lời Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân phán: Nầy, ta sẽ sai gươm dao, đói kém, và ôn dịch đến trên chúng nó, sẽ khiến chúng nó giống như những trái vả xấu xa nầy, xấu đến nỗi người ta không thể ăn được.18 Ta sẽ lấy gươm dao, đói kém và ôn dịch đuổi theo chúng nó, sẽ phó chúng nó bị ném đi ném lại giữa mọi nước thế gian, làm sự rủa sả, gở lạ, chê cười, hổ nhuốc giữa mọi dân tộc mà ta đã đuổi chúng nó đến.19 Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Đó là vì chúng nó không nghe lời ta, khi ta đã dậy sớm sai đầy tớ ta, là các tiên tri, lấy lời đó đến cùng chúng nó; nhưng các ngươi chẳng khứng nghe, Đức Giê-hô-va phán vậy.20 Cho nên, hỡi các ngươi, là những kẻ phu tù mà ta đã sai đi từ Giê-ru-sa-lem qua Ba-by-lôn, hãy nghe lời Đức Giê-hô-va.21 Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, phán như vầy về A-háp, con trai Cô-la-gia, và về Sê-đê-kia, con trai Ma-a-sê-gia, là những kẻ nhân danh ta nói tiên tri giả dối: Nầy, ta sẽ phó chúng nó trong tay Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, vua Ba-by-lôn, người sẽ giết chúng nó trước mắt các ngươi.22 Mọi người Giu-đa bị làm phu tù tại Ba-by-lôn sẽ lấy hai người ấy làm câu nguyền rủa mà rằng: Nguyền xin Đức Giê-hô-va làm cho ngươi cũng như Sê-đê-kia và A-háp, mà vua Ba-by-lôn đã quay trong lửa!23 vì chúng nó đã làm sự dại dột trong Y-sơ-ra-ên, đã phạm tội tà dâm với những vợ người lân cận mình, và đã nhân danh ta rao truyền lời giả dối mà ta chưa hề khiến rao truyền. Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Ta là Đấng biết, và làm chứng.24 Ngươi cũng khá nói về Sê-ma-gia ở Nê-hê-lam rằng:25 Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, phán như vầy: Ngươi đã lấy danh mình gởi thơ cho cả dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem, cho Sô-phô-ni, con trai Ma-a-sê-gia, làm thầy tế lễ, và cho mọi thầy tế lễ rằng:26 Đức Giê-hô-va đã lập ngươi làm thầy tế lễ thay cho Giê-hô-gia-đa, là thầy tế lễ, đặng có người coi sóc trong nhà Đức Giê-hô-va, hễ người nào điên dại xưng mình là tiên tri, thì bắt lấy, cùm và gông lại.27 Vậy thì làm sao ngươi không trách Giê-rê-mi ở A-na-tốt, là người xưng mình là tiên tri cho các ngươi dường ấy?28 Vả, chính nó đã gởi lời đến Ba-by-lôn nói cùng chúng ta rằng: Sự bị phu tù còn lâu ngày; hãy xây nhà và ở; hãy trồng vườn và ăn trái.29 Thầy tế lễ Sô-phô-ni đã đọc thơ nầy vào tai tiên tri Giê-rê-mi.30 Bấy giờ có lời Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng Giê-rê-mi rằng:31 Hãy sai nói điều nầy cho mọi kẻ bị phu tù rằng: Đức Giê-hô-va phán về Sê-ma-gia ở Nê-hê-lam như vầy: Vì Sê-ma-gia đã nói tiên tri cho các ngươi, mà ta chưa hề sai nó, và nó đã làm cho các ngươi nhờ cậy sự giả dối,32 nên Đức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Nầy, ta sẽ phạt Sê-ma-gia, người Nê-hê-lam, và dòng dõi nó nữa. Về dòng nó, sẽ chẳng có ai được còn ở giữa dân nầy; chính mình nó cũng sẽ chẳng thấy sự lành ta sẽ làm cho dân ta, vì nó đã nói ra sự bạn nghịch Đức Giê-hô-va, Đức Giê-hô-va phán vậy.

Jeremiah’s Letter to the Exiles

1 The prophet Jeremiah sent a letter to the exiles Nebuchadnezzar had carried off from Jerusalems to Babylon. It was addressed to the elders who were left among the exiles, to the priests, to the prophets, and to all the other people who were exiled in Babylon.t2 He sent it after King Jeconiah, the queen mother, the palace officials,t the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metal workers had been exiled from Jerusalem.s

3 He sent it with Elasah son of Shaphans and Gemariah son of Hilkiah.s King Zedekiah of Judah had sent these men to Babylon to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.s The letter said:
4 “The Lord God of Israel who rules over allts says to all those he sentts into exile to Babylon from Jerusalem,s5 ‘Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce.6 Marry and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons and allow your daughters get married so that they too can have sons and daughters. Grow in number; do not dwindle away.

7 Work to see that the city where I sent you as exiles enjoys peace and prosperity. Pray to the Lord for it. For as it prospers you will prosper.’
8 “For the Lord God of Israel who rules over allts says, ‘Do not let the prophets or those among you who claim to be able to predict the future by divinations deceive you. And do not pay any attention to the dreams that you are encouraging them to dream.

9 They are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so.ts But I did not send them. I, the Lord, affirm it!’t
10 “For the Lord says, ‘Only when the seventy years of Babylonian rules are over will I again take up consideration for you.t Then I will fulfill my gracious promise to you and restoret you to your homeland.ts11 For I know what I have planned for you,’ says the Lord.t ‘I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give yout a future filled with hope.t12 When you call out to me and come to me in prayer,t I will hear your prayers.t13 When you seek me in prayer and worship, you will find me available to you. If you seek me with all your heart and soul,t

14 I will make myself available to you,’t says the Lord.t ‘Then I will reverse your plightt and will regather you from all the nations and all the places where I have exiled you,’ says the Lord.t ‘I will bring you back to the place from which I exiled you.’
15 “You say, ‘The Lord has raised up prophets of good newst for us here in Babylon.’16 But just listen to what the Lord has to say aboutts the king who occupies David’s throne and all your fellow countrymen who are still living in this city of Jerusalemt and were not carried off into exile with you.17 The Lord who rules over allt says, ‘I will bring war,t starvation, and disease on them. I will treat them like figs that are so rottents they cannot be eaten.18 I will chase after them with war,t starvation, and disease. I will make all the kingdoms of the earth horrified at what happens to them. I will make them examples of those who are cursed, objects of horror, hissing scorn, and ridicule among all the nations where I exile them.19 For they have not paid attention to what I said to them through my servants the prophets whom I sent to them over and over again,’t says the Lord.t ‘And you exilest have not paid any attention to them either,’ says the Lord.t

20 ‘So pay attention to what I, the Lord, have said,t all you exiles whom I have sent to Babylon from Jerusalem.’
21 “The Lord God of Israel who rules over allts also has something to say about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so.t ‘I will hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and he will execute them before your very eyes.22 And all the exiles of Judah who are in Babylon will use them as examples when they put a curse on anyone. They will say, “May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab whom the king of Babylon roasted to death in the fire!”s

23 This will happen to them because they have done what is shamefult in Israel. They have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have spoken lies while claiming my authority.t They have spoken words that I did not command them to speak. I know what they have done. I have been a witness to it,’ says the Lord.”t

A Response to the Letter and a Subsequent Letter

24 The Lord told Jeremiah, “Tellt Shemaiah the Nehelamitet25 that the Lord God of Israel who rules over allts has a message for him.t Tell him,s ‘On your own initiativet you sent a lettert to the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiahs and to all the other priests and to all the people in Jerusalem.s In your letter you said to Zephaniah,t26 “The Lord has made you priest in place of Jehoiada.t He has put you in charge in the Lord’s temple of controllings any lunatics who pretends to be a prophet.t And it is your duty to put any such person in the stockst with an iron collar around his neck.t27 You should have reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth who is pretending to be a prophet among you!t

28 For he has even sent a message to us here in Babylon. He wrote and told us,t “You will be there a long time. Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce.”’”s
29 Zephaniah the priest read that letter to the prophet Jeremiah.t30 Then the Lord spoke to Jeremiah.31 “Send a message to all the exiles in Babylon. Tell them, ‘The Lord has spoken about Shemaiah the Nehelamite. “Shemaiah has spoken to you as a prophet even though I did not send him. He is making you trust in a lie.t

32 Because he has done this,”t the Lord says, “I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his whole family. There will not be any of them left to experience the good things that I will do for my people. I, the Lord, affirm it! For he counseled rebellion against the Lord.”’”s
