ヨブ記 1

一

1 　ウツの国にヨブという人が住んでいました。　この人は人格者で、神様を敬い、悪から遠ざかっていました。　2-3 子宝に恵まれ、息子が七人、娘が三人もいました。　それに、羊七千頭、らくだ三千頭、五百くびきの牛、雌ろば五百頭がいる上に、大ぜいの召使をかかえる億万長者でした。　名実ともに、その地方きっての大牧場主だったのです。
4 　毎年、ヨブの息子たちは、誕生日ごとに、自宅へ兄弟姉妹を招いて祝賀会を開き、飲み食いして陽気にはしゃぐことにしていました。　5 時には数日に及ぶこの誕生パーティーが終わると、ヨブは決まって子供たちを呼び寄せ、彼らの身をきよめる儀式を行ないました。　彼は朝早く起き、子供たち一人一人のために、完全に焼き尽くすいけにえをささげるのでした。　彼は口ぐせのように、「息子たちが、もしかしたら罪を犯し、心の中で神様に背いたかもしれない」と言っていたからです。　この儀式はヨブの年中行事の一つになっていました。
6 　ある日、御使いたちが神様の前に出た時のことです。　その中に、告発者のサタンもいました。
7 　神様はサタンに問いただしました。　「おまえはどこから来たのか。」
「地球のパトロールから帰って来たところでさ。」
8 　「わたしのしもべヨブを知っているか。　彼は世界でいちばんの人格者だ。　神は敬うし、一点の非の打ちどころもない。」
9 　「あたり前ですよ。　あなたが特別ひいきにしているんだから。　10 あなたはいつも、彼とその家庭、持ち物を守っているじゃないですか。　それに、彼のすることは何でも栄えるように目をかけている。　これじゃあ、金がうなるほどあっても不思議はない。　あなたを拝むふりをして当然ですよ。　11 試しに、やっこさんの財産を取り上げてみるんですな。　きっとあなたをのろいますぜ。」
12-13 「彼の財産のことは、おまえの好きなようにしてよい。　ただし、彼の体に触れてはならんぞ。」
こうして、サタンは出て行きました。　それからしばらくして、ヨブの息子、娘たちが長兄の家で祝宴を張っている時、悲劇の幕が切って落とされました。
14-15 使者がヨブの家に飛んで来て、悲報を伝えたのです。　「た、たいへんです。　牛が畑を耕し、そばでろばが草を食べているところへ、いきなりシェバ人が襲いかかりました。　家畜はさらわれ、作男たちは皆殺しです。　どうにか助かったのは私ひとりです。」
16 　彼の話がまだ終わらないうちに、別の使いが、いっそう悪い知らせを伝えました。　「恐ろしいことです。　神の火が天から下って、羊と牧童を残らず焼き殺しました。　難を免れたのは私だけです。」
17 　この男が報告し終えないうちに、もう一人の使者が息せき切って駆け込んで来ました。　「だんな様ーっ。　三組のカルデヤ人の野盗がらくだを奪い、召使たちを殺したのです。　私ひとりが、なんとか逃げて来ました。」
18 　彼がなおも話している間に、さらにもう一人が駆けつけました。　「お子さんたちが大へんです。　皆さん、ご長男の家で宴会を開いておいででした。　19 すると突然、砂漠の方から大風が吹きつけて、家を直撃したのです。　それで屋根が落ち、その下敷きになって、皆さんお亡くなりに......。　私だけが、どうにか命拾いをしました。」
20 　この時ヨブは立ち上がり、悲しみのあまり上着を引き裂き、地にひれ伏して、　21 神様に言いました。　「生まれた時、私は裸でした。　死ぬ時も、何一つ持って行けません。　私の持ち物は全部、神様が下さったものです。　ですから、神様はそれを取り上げる権利もお持ちです。　いつでも、どんな時でも、神様の御名がたたえられますように。」
22 　このような事態になっても、ヨブは罪を犯したり、神様を悪しざまに言ったりしませんでした。

Job 1

1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.4 And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.6 Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.7 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.8 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.9 Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?10 Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.11 But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.12 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.13 And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house,14 that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;15 and the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house;19 and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.20 Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;21 and he said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
