第29章

1 ヨブはまた言葉をついで言った、2 「ああ過ぎた年月のようであったらよいのだが、神がわたしを守ってくださった日のようであったらよいのだが。3 あの時には、彼のともしびがわたしの頭の上に輝き、彼の光によってわたしは暗やみを歩んだ。4 わたしの盛んな時のようであったならよいのだが。あの時には、神の親しみがわたしの天幕の上にあった。5 あの時には、全能者がなおわたしと共にいまし、わたしの子供たちもわたしの周囲にいた。6 あの時、わたしの足跡は乳で洗われ、岩もわたしのために油の流れを注ぎだした。7 あの時には、わたしは町の門に出て行き、わたしの座を広場に設けた。8 若い者はわたしを見てしりぞき、老いた者は身をおこして立ち、9 君たる者も物言うことをやめて、その口に手を当て、10 尊い者も声をおさめて、その舌を上あごにつけた。11 耳に聞いた者はわたしを祝福された者となし、目に見た者はこれをあかしした。12 これは助けを求める貧しい者を救い、また、みなしごおよび助ける人のない者を救ったからである。13 今にも滅びようとした者の祝福がわたしに来た。わたしはまたやもめの心をして喜び歌わせた。14 わたしは正義を着、正義はわたしをおおった。わたしの公義は上着のごとく、また冠のようであった。15 わたしは目しいの目となり、足なえの足となり、16 貧しい者の父となり、知らない人の訴えの理由を調べてやった。17 わたしはまた悪しき者のきばを折り、その歯の間から獲物を引き出した。18 その時、わたしは言った、『わたしは自分の巣の中で死に、わたしの日は砂のように多くなるであろう。19 わたしの根は水のほとりにはびこり、露は夜もすがらわたしの枝におくであろう。20 わたしの栄えはわたしと共に新しく、わたしの弓はわたしの手にいつも強い』と。21 人々はわたしに聞いて待ち、黙して、わたしの教に従った。22 わたしが言った後は彼らは再び言わなかった。わたしの言葉は彼らの上に雨のように降りそそいだ。23 彼らは雨を待つように、わたしを待ち望み、春の雨を仰ぐように口を開いて仰いだ。24 彼らが希望を失った時にも、わたしは彼らにむかってほほえんだ。彼らはわたしの顔の光を除くことができなかった。25 わたしは彼らのために道を選び、そのかしらとして座し、軍中の王のようにしており、嘆く者を慰める人のようであった。

IV. Job’s Concluding Soliloquy (29:1-31:40)

Job Recalls His Former Condition

1 Then Job continuedt his speech:

2 “O that I could bet ast I was
in the months now gone,t
in the dayst when God watchedt over me,

3 whent he causedt his lamps
to shine upon my head,
and by his light
I walkedt through darkness;t

4 just as I was in my most productive time,t
when God’s intimate friendships was experienced in my tent,

5 when the Almightyt was still with me
and my children weres around me;

6 when my stepst were bathedt with buttert
and the rock poured out for me streams of olive oil!t

7 When I went out to the city gate
and secured my seat in the public square,s

8 the young men would see me and step aside,t
and the old men would get up and remain standing;

9 the chief men refrained from talking
and covered their mouths with their hands;

10 the voices of the nobles fell silent,t
and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.

Job’s Benevolence

11 “As soon as the ear heard these things,t it blessed me,t
and when the eye saw them, it bore witness to me,

12 for I rescued the poor who cried out for help,
and the orphan whot had no one to assist him;

13 the blessing of the dying man descended on me,t
and I made the widow’s heart rejoice;t

14 I put on righteousness and it clothed me,t
my just dealingt was like a robe and a turban;

15 I was eyes for the blind
and feet for the lame;

16 I was a fathers to the needy,
and I investigated the case of the person I did not know;

17 I broke the fangst of the wicked,
and made him dropt his prey from his teeth.

Job’s Confidence

18 “Then I thought, ‘I will die in my own home,s
my days as numerous as the grains of sand.s

19 My roots reach the water,
and the dew lies on my branches all night long.

20 My gloryt will always be fresht in me,
and my bow ever new in my hand.’

Job’s Reputation

21 “Peoplet listened to me and waited silently;s
they kept silent for my advice.

22 After I had spoken, they did not respond;
my words fell on them drop by drop.t

23 They waited for me as people waitt for the rain,
and they opened their mouthss
as fort the spring rains.

24 If I smiled at them, they hardly believed it;t
and they did not cause the light of my face to darken.t

25 I choset the way for themt
and sat as their chief;t
I lived like a king among his troops;
I was like one who comforts mourners.s
