1 Gióp cứ nói lẽ luận cao mình, mà rằng:2 Ôi! Ước gì tôi được như buổi trước, Như trong các ngày mà Đức Chúa Trời gìn giữ tôi;3 Khi ngọn đuốc Chúa soi trên đầu tôi; Và nhờ ánh sáng Ngài, tôi bước qua sự tối tăm.4 Chớ chi tôi được như lúc còn tráng kiệt, Khi tình thiệt hữu của Đức Chúa Trời còn đoái đến trại tôi;5 Khi Đấng Toàn năng còn ở cùng tôi, Và các con cái tôi vây quanh tôi;6 Lúc tôi rửa chân trong sữa, Và hòn đá phun suối dầu ra cho tôi!7 Khi tôi đi ra đến cửa thành, Sửa soạn chỗ ngồi mình tại phố chợ,8 Các gã trai trẻ thấy tôi bèn ẩn đi, Và các người già cả đều chổi dậy và đứng;9 Những quan trưởng kiêng nói, Và lấy tay bụm miệng;10 Tiếng người tước vị nín thinh, Và lưỡi họ dính nơi ổ gà.11 Khi tai ai nghe tôi, bèn xưng tôi có phước, Mắt ai thấy tôi, bèn làm chứng cho tôi.12 Ấy vì tôi giải cứu kẻ khốn cùng kêu cầu, Và kẻ mồ côi không ai giúp đỡ.13 Kẻ gần chết chúc phước cho tôi, Và tôi làm cho lòng người góa bụa nức nở vui mừng.14 Tôi mặc lấy sự công bình, và nó che phủ tôi, Sự ngay thẳng tôi khác nào áo ngoài và mão triều thiên.15 Tôi đã như con mắt cho kẻ mù, Và như chân cho kẻ què.16 Tôi đã làm cha cho kẻ nghèo khó, Còn duyên cớ của kẻ lạ, tôi tra xét cho rõ ràng.17 Tôi bẻ gẫy hàm kẻ bất công, Và rứt mồi nó ngậm nơi răng.18 Tôi bèn nói rằng: Ta sẽ thác trong ổ của ta; Ngày ta sẽ nhiều như hột cát;19 Rễ ta bò ăn dài theo nước, Và cả đêm sương đọng trên nhành ta.20 Vinh hiển ta mới mẻ với ta luôn, Cung ta được cứng mạnh lại trong tay ta.21 Người ta lắng tai nghe tôi, chờ đợi, Và làm thinh đặng nghe lời tôi bàn.22 Sau khi tôi nói, chúng không còn đáp lại; Lời tôi nói gội nhuần trên chúng (như sương).23 Họ trông đợi tôi như trông đợi mưa, Hả miệng ra dường như hứng mưa muộn.24 Tôi mỉm cười với chúng, khi chúng bị ngã lòng; Họ chẳng hề làm rối nét mặt bình tịnh tôi được.25 Tôi chọn con đường cho chúng, và ngồi làm đầu họ, Ở như vua tại ở giữa quân đội, Khác nào một kẻ an ủy những người sầu.

IV. Job’s Concluding Soliloquy (29:1-31:40)

Job Recalls His Former Condition

1 Then Job continuedt his speech:

2 “O that I could bet ast I was
in the months now gone,t
in the dayst when God watchedt over me,

3 whent he causedt his lamps
to shine upon my head,
and by his light
I walkedt through darkness;t

4 just as I was in my most productive time,t
when God’s intimate friendships was experienced in my tent,

5 when the Almightyt was still with me
and my children weres around me;

6 when my stepst were bathedt with buttert
and the rock poured out for me streams of olive oil!t

7 When I went out to the city gate
and secured my seat in the public square,s

8 the young men would see me and step aside,t
and the old men would get up and remain standing;

9 the chief men refrained from talking
and covered their mouths with their hands;

10 the voices of the nobles fell silent,t
and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.

Job’s Benevolence

11 “As soon as the ear heard these things,t it blessed me,t
and when the eye saw them, it bore witness to me,

12 for I rescued the poor who cried out for help,
and the orphan whot had no one to assist him;

13 the blessing of the dying man descended on me,t
and I made the widow’s heart rejoice;t

14 I put on righteousness and it clothed me,t
my just dealingt was like a robe and a turban;

15 I was eyes for the blind
and feet for the lame;

16 I was a fathers to the needy,
and I investigated the case of the person I did not know;

17 I broke the fangst of the wicked,
and made him dropt his prey from his teeth.

Job’s Confidence

18 “Then I thought, ‘I will die in my own home,s
my days as numerous as the grains of sand.s

19 My roots reach the water,
and the dew lies on my branches all night long.

20 My gloryt will always be fresht in me,
and my bow ever new in my hand.’

Job’s Reputation

21 “Peoplet listened to me and waited silently;s
they kept silent for my advice.

22 After I had spoken, they did not respond;
my words fell on them drop by drop.t

23 They waited for me as people waitt for the rain,
and they opened their mouthss
as fort the spring rains.

24 If I smiled at them, they hardly believed it;t
and they did not cause the light of my face to darken.t

25 I choset the way for themt
and sat as their chief;t
I lived like a king among his troops;
I was like one who comforts mourners.s
