انسان شدن کلام

1 در آغاز کلامt بود و کلام با خدا بود و کلام، خدا بود؛2 همان در آغاز با خدا بود.3 همه چیز به‌واسطۀ او پدید آمد، و از هر آنچه پدید آمد، هیچ چیز بدون او پدیدار نگشت.4 در او حیات بودt و آن حیات، نور آدمیان بود.5 این نور در تاریکی می‌درخشد و تاریکی آن را درنیافته است.t6 مردی آمد که از جانب خدا فرستاده شده بود؛ نامش یحیی بود.7 او برای شهادت دادن آمد، شهادت بر آن نور، تا همه به‌واسطۀ او ایمان آورند.8 او خودْ آن نور نبود، بلکه آمد تا بر آن نور شهادت دهد.9 آن نور حقیقی که بر هر انسانی روشنایی می‌افکَنَد براستی به جهان می‌آمد.t10 او در جهان بود، و جهان به‌واسطۀ او پدید آمد؛ امّا جهان او را نشناخت.11 به مُلک خویش آمد، ولی قومِ خودش او را نپذیرفتند.12 امّا به همۀ کسانی که او را پذیرفتند، این حق را دادt که فرزندان خدا شوند، یعنی به هر کس که به نام او ایمان آورد؛13 آنان که نه با زادنی بشری،t نه از خواهشِ تن و نه از خواستۀ یک مرد، بلکه از خدا زاده شدند.14 و کلام، انسان خاکی شد و در میان ما مسکن گزید.t و ما بر جلال او نگریستیم، جلالی درخور آن پسر یگانه که از جانب پدر آمد، پر از فیض و راستی.15 یحیی بر او شهادت می‌داد و ندا می‌کرد که «این است کسی که درباره‌اش گفتم: ”آن که پس از من می‌آید بر من برتری یافته، زیرا پیش از من وجود داشته است“.»16 از پُری او ما همه بهره‌مند شدیم، فیض از پی فیض.t17 زیرا شریعت به‌واسطۀ موسی داده شد، و فیض و راستی به‌واسطۀ عیسی مسیح آمد.18 هیچ‌کس هرگز خدا را ندیده است. امّا آن خدای یگانهt که در بَرِ پدر است، همان او را شناسانید.

شهادت یحیی

19 این است شهادت یحیی آنگاه که یهودیان،t کاهنان و لاویان را از اورشلیم نزدش فرستادند تا از او بپرسند که «تو کیستی؟»20 او معترف شده، انکار نکرد، بلکه اذعان داشت که «من مسیحt نیستم.»21 پرسیدند: «پس چه؟ آیا الیاسی؟» پاسخ داد: «نیستم.» پرسیدند: «آیا آن پیامبری؟»t پاسخ داد: «نه!»22 آنگاه او را گفتند: «پس کیستی؟ بگو چه پاسخی برای فرستندگان خود ببریم؟ دربارۀ خود چه می‌گویی؟»23 یحیی طبق آنچه اِشَعْیای پیامبر بیان کرده بود، گفت:
«من صدای آن نداکننده در بیابانم که می‌گوید،
”راه خداوند را هموار سازید.“‌»24 شماری از آن فرستادگان که از فَریسیان بودند،25 از او پرسیدند: «اگر تو نه مسیحی، نه الیاس، و نه آن پیامبر، پس چرا تعمید می‌دهی؟»26 یحیی در پاسخ گفت: «من با آب تعمید می‌د‌هم، امّا در میان شما کسی ایستاده که شما او را نمی‌شناسید،27 همان که پس از من می‌آید و من لایق گشودن بند کفشش نیستم.»28 اینها همه در بیت‌عَنْیا واقع در آن سوی رود اردن رخ داد، آنجا که یحیی تعمید می‌داد.

برۀ خدا

29 فردای آن روز، یحیی چون عیسی را دید که به‌سویش می‌آید، گفت: «این است برۀ خدا که گناه از جهان برمی‌گیرد!30 این است آن که درباره‌اش گفتم ”پس از من مردی می‌آید که بر من برتری یافته، زیرا پیش از من وجود داشته است.“31 من خود نیز او را نمی‌شناختم، امّا برای همین آمده‌ام و با آب تعمید داده‌ام که او بر اسرائیل ظاهر شود.»32 پس یحیی شهادت داده، گفت: «روح را دیدم که چون کبوتری از آسمان فرود آمد و بر او قرار گرفت.33 من خود نیز او را نمی‌شناختم، امّا همان که مرا فرستاد تا با آب تعمید دهم، مرا گفت: ”هر گاه دیدی روح بر کسی فرود آمد و بر او بمانْد، بدان همان است که با روح‌القدس تعمید خواهد داد.“34 و من دیده‌ام و شهادت می‌دهم که این است پسر خدا.»

نخستین شاگردان عیسی

35 فردای آن روز، دیگر بار یحیی با دو تن از شاگردانش ایستاده بود.36 او بر عیسی که راه می‌رفت، چشم دوخت و گفت: «این است برۀ خدا!»37 چون آن دو شاگرد این سخن را شنیدند، از پی عیسی به‌راه افتادند.38 عیسی روی گرداند و دید که از پی او می‌آیند. ایشان را گفت:t «چه می‌خواهید؟» گفتند: «رَبّیt (یعنی ای استاد)، کجا منزل داری؟»39 پاسخ داد: «بیایید و ببینید.» پس رفتند و دیدند کجا منزل دارد و آن روز را با او به‌سر بردند. آن وقت، ساعت دهم از روز بود.t40 یکی از آن دو که با شنیدن سخن یحیی از پی عیسی رفت، آندریاس، برادر شَمعون پِطرُس بود.41 او نخست، برادر خود شَمعون را یافت و به او گفت: «ما مسیح را (که معنی آن ”مسح شده“ است) یافته‌ایم.»42 و او را نزد عیسی برد. عیسی بر او نگریست و گفت: «تو شَمعونْ پسر یوحنایی،t امّا ”کیفا“ خوانده خواهی شد (که معنی آن صخرهt است).»

دعوت عیسی از فیلیپُس و نَتَنائیل

43 روز بعد، عیسی بر آن شد که به جلیل برود. او فیلیپُس را یافت و به او گفت: «از پی من بیا!»44 فیلیپُس اهل بیت‌صِیْدا، شهر آندریاس و پِطرُس بود.45 او نَتَنائیل را یافت و به او گفت: «آن کس را که موسی در تورات بدو اشاره کرده، و پیامبران نیز درباره‌اش نوشته‌اند، یافته‌ایم! او عیسی، پسر یوسف، از شهر ناصره است!»46 نَتَنائیل به او گفت: «مگر می‌شود از ناصره هم چیزی خوب بیرون بیاید؟» فیلیپُس پاسخ داد: «بیا و ببین.»47 چون عیسی دید نَتَنائیل به‌سویش می‌آید، درباره‌اش گفت: «براستی که این مردی اسرائیلی است که در او هیچ فریب نیست!»48 نَتَنائیل به او گفت: «مرا از کجا می‌شناسی؟» عیسی پاسخ داد: «پیش از آنکه فیلیپُس تو را بخواند، هنگامی که هنوز زیر آن درخت انجیر بودی، تو را دیدم.»49 نَتَنائیل پاسخ داد: «استاد، تو پسر خدایی! تو پادشاه اسرائیلی!»50 عیسی در جواب گفت: «آیا به‌خاطر همین که گفتم زیر آن درخت انجیر تو را دیدم، ایمان می‌آوری؟ از این پس، چیزهای بزرگتر خواهی دید.»51 سپس گفت: «آمین، آمین،t به شما می‌گویم که آسمان را گشوده و فرشتگان خدا را در حال صعود و نزول بر پسر انسان خواهید دید.»

JOHN 1

The Word of Life

1 In the beginning was the one
who is called the Word.
The Word was with God
and was truly God.

2 From the very beginning
the Word was with God.

3 And with this Word,
God created all things.
Nothing was made
without the Word.
Everything that was created

4 received its life from him,
and his life gave light
to everyone.

5 The light keeps shining
in the dark,
and darkness has never
put it out.t

6  t God sent a man named John,

7 who came to tell
about the light
and to lead all people
to have faith.

8 John wasn't this light.
He came only to tell
about the light.

9 The true light that shines
on everyone
was coming into the world.

10 The Word was in the world,
but no one knew him,
though God had made the world
with his Word.

11 He came into his own world,
but his own nation
did not welcome him.

12 Yet some people accepted him
and put their faith in him.
So he gave them the right
to be the children of God.

13 They were not God's children
by nature or because
of any human desires.
God himself was the one
who made them his children.

14 The Word became
a human being
and lived here with us.
We saw his true glory,
the glory of the only Son
of the Father.
From him the complete gifts
of undeserved grace and truth
have come down to us.

15 John spoke about him and shouted, “This is the one I told you would come! He is greater than I am, because he was alive before I was born.”
16 Because of all that the Son is, we have been given one blessing after another.t 17 The Law was given by Moses, but Jesus Christ brought us undeserved kindness and truth.

18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is truly God and is closest to the Father, has shown us what God is like.

John the Baptist Tells //about Jesus

(Matthew 3.1-12; Mark 1.1-8; Luke 3.15-17)

21 t Then when they asked him if he were Elijah, he said, “No, I am not!” And when they asked if he were the Prophet, t he also said “No!”

22 Finally, they said, “Who are you then? We have to give an answer to the ones who sent us. Tell us who you are!”

23  t John answered in the words of the prophet Isaiah, “I am only someone shouting in the desert, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord!’ ”
24 Some Pharisees had also been sent to John.

25 They asked him, “Why are you baptizing people, if you are not the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet?”
26 John told them, “I use water to baptize people. But here with you is someone you don't know. 27 Even though I came first, I am not good enough to untie his sandals.”

28 John said this as he was baptizing east of the Jordan River in Bethany.t

The Lamb of God

29 The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said:
Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 He is the one I told you about when I said, “Someone else will come, who is greater than I am, because he was alive before I was born.”

31 I didn't know who he was. But I came to baptize you with water, so that everyone in Israel would see him.
32 I was there and saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven. And the Spirit stayed on him. 33 Before this I didn't know who he was. But the one who sent me to baptize with water had told me, “You will see the Spirit come down and stay on someone. Then you will know that he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.”

34 I saw this happen, and I tell you that he is the Son of God.

The First Disciples of Jesus

37 John's two followers heard him, and they went with Jesus.

38 When Jesus turned and saw them, he asked, “What do you want?”
They answered, “Rabbi, where do you live?” The Hebrew word “Rabbi” means “Teacher.”

39 Jesus replied, “Come and see!” It was already about four o'clock in the afternoon when they went with him and saw where he lived. So they stayed on for the rest of the day.
40 One of the two men who had heard John and had gone with Jesus was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.

41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and tell him, “We have found the Messiah!” The Hebrew word “Messiah” means the same as the Greek word “Christ.”

42 Andrew brought his brother to Jesus. And when Jesus saw him, he said, “Simon son of John, you will be called Cephas.” This name can be translated as “Peter.”t

Jesus Chooses Philip //and Nathanael

43-44 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. There he met Philip, who was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. Jesus said to Philip, “Follow me.”

45 Philip then found Nathanael and said, “We have found the one that Moses and the Prophetst wrote about. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”

46 Nathanael asked, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Philip answered, “Come and see.”

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said, “Here is a true descendant of our ancestor Israel. And he isn't deceitful.”t

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”

49 Nathanael said, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God and the King of Israel!”
50 Jesus answered, “Did you believe me just because I said that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see something even greater. 51 t I tell you for certain you will see heaven open and God's angels going up and coming down on the Son of Man.”t
