Lasarus sterf

1 Lasarus was siek. Hy het in Betanië gewoon. Betanië was ’n dorpie waar Lasarus se susters Maria en Marta ook gewoon het. 2 Dit was Maria wat lekkerruik-olie op die Here se voete uitgegooi het en toe sy voete met haar hare afgedroog het. Haar broer Lasarus was siek. 3 Die twee susters het iemand gestuur om vir Jesus te sê dat Lasarus siek is, Lasarus vir wie Jesus lief was.

4 Toe Jesus hoor dat Lasarus siek is, het Hy gesê: “Hierdie siekte sal nie vir Lasarus doodmaak nie. God sal sy siekte gebruik om te wys dat Hy God is. Dan sal die mense kan sien dat Ek, die Seun van God, ook God is.”
5 Jesus was lief vir Marta en haar suster en vir Lasarus. 6 Jesus het gehoor dat Lasarus siek is, maar Hy het nog twee dae op die plek gebly waar Hy was.

7 Toe het Jesus vir sy tdissipels gesê: “Kom ons gaan weer na Judea.”

8 Sy dissipels het gesê: “tRabbi, nie lank gelede nie wou die Jode U daar doodgooi met klippe. Hoekom wil U nou weer daarnatoe gaan?”
9 Jesus het gesê: “’n Dag het twaalf ure. Wanneer ’n mens in die dag loop, dan val hy nie, want hy sien die lig van die son, die lig van hierdie wêreld.

10 Maar wanneer iemand in die nag loop, dan val hy, want daar is nie lig nie.”

11 Toe sê Jesus: “Ons vriend Lasarus slaap, maar Ek gaan om hom wakker te maak.”

12 Die dissipels sê toe vir Hom: “Here, dit is goed dat hy slaap. Dan sal hy gesond word.”
13 Toe Jesus gesê het Lasarus slaap, het dit beteken Lasarus is dood. Die dissipels het gedink Jesus praat van slaap soos ’n mens in die nag slaap. 14 Jesus het toe reguit vir hulle gesê: “Lasarus is dood.

15 Ek is bly Ek was nie daar toe Lasarus gesterf het nie. Dit is goed vir julle, want wat Ek sal doen, sal julle help om te glo. Kom ons gaan nou na hom toe.”

16 Tomas, sy ander naam was “Tweeling,” het vir die ander dissipels gesê: “Kom ons gaan saam met Jesus, sodat ons saam met Hom kan sterf.”

Jesus kan mense weer laat lewe

22 maar ek weet dat God ook nou vir U alles sal doen wat U vir Hom vra.”

23 Jesus het vir haar gesê: “Jou broer sal weer lewe.”

24 Marta sê toe vir Jesus: “Ek weet hy sal weer lewe op die tlaaste dag wanneer God al die mense wat dood is, weer sal laat lewe.”
25 Jesus het vir haar gesê: “Ek laat mense lewe, Ek laat hulle vir altyd lewe. Mense wat in My glo en sterf, sal lewe.

26 Almal wat lewe en wat in My glo, sal nie dood bly nie. Glo jy wat Ek vir jou sê?”

27 Marta het vir Hom gesê: “Ja, Here, ek glo U is tdie Christus, die Seun van God. Ek glo U is die Een, God het U na die wêreld gestuur.”

Jesus huil

28 Nadat Marta dit gesê het, het sy teruggegaan huis toe. Sy het haar suster Maria geroep en saggies vir haar gesê: “Die tRabbi is hier. Hy roep jou.”
29 Toe Maria dit hoor, het sy vinnig opgestaan en na Jesus toe gegaan. 30 Jesus het nog nie in die stad ingegaan nie. Hy was nog daar waar Marta met Hom gepraat het. 31 Daar was Jode saam met Maria in die huis. Hulle het gekom om haar te troos. Hulle het gesien Maria staan vinnig op en gaan buitetoe. Hulle het gedink sy gaan na Lasarus se tgraf om daar te gaan huil. Daarom het hulle saam met haar gegaan.

32 Maria het by die plek gekom waar Jesus gestaan het en sy het voor Hom gekniel. Sy het vir Hom gesê: “Here, as U hier was toe my broer siek was, dan het my broer nie gesterf nie.”
33 Jesus het gesien Maria huil. Hy het gesien die Jode wat saam met haar gekom het, huil ook. Toe was Jesus baie hartseer en ontsteld.

34 Hy het gevra: “Waar het julle vir Lasarus begrawe?”
Hulle het vir Hom gesê: “Here, kom kyk, ons sal vir U gaan wys.”
35 Jesus het gehuil.

36 Die Jode het gesê: “Kyk, Jesus huil, hy was baie lief vir Lasarus.”

37 Party Jode het gesê: “Jesus het die blinde man laat sien. Hoekom het hy vir Lasarus laat sterf?”

Jesus laat Lasarus weer lewe

39 Jesus het gesê hulle moet die klip wegrol. Marta, die suster van Lasarus, het vir Jesus gesê: “Nee, Here, ons kan dit nie doen nie. Lasarus is vier dae in die graf en dit sal sleg ruik.”

40 Jesus het vir haar gesê: “Ek het vir jou gesê jy moet glo, dan sal jy sien God sal wys dat Hy God is.”
41 Die Jode het die klip weggerol. Jesus het na die hemel gekyk en gesê: “Vader, dankie dat U my gebed hoor.

42 Ek sê dit sodat die mense wat hier rondom My staan, kan glo dat U My na die wêreld gestuur het. Ek weet U luister altyd na my gebed.”

43 Toe Jesus klaar gebid het, het Hy hard geskree en gesê: “Lasarus, kom uit die graf!”

44 Lasarus, die man wat gesterf het, het uit die graf gekom. Die tgrafdoeke was nog om sy voete en hande, en daar was ’n kopdoek oor sy gesig. Jesus het vir hulle gesê: “Haal die grafdoeke van Lasarus af sodat hy huis toe kan gaan.”

Die Joodse leiers besluit om Jesus dood te maak

48 As ons niks aan Jesus doen nie, dan sal al die mense in hom glo. Dan sal die Romeine ons ttempel afbreek en ons volk tverwoes.”
49 Kajafas was een van die mense wat by die vergadering was. Hy was daardie jaar die thoëpriester. Hy het vir hulle gesê: “Julle weet niks,

50 julle verstaan nie dat dit beter is as een mens sterf en nie die hele volk nie. Dan sal die hele volk nie tverlore gaan nie.”
51 Kajafas se woorde het nie van homself gekom nie. Hy was daardie jaar hoëpriester, daarom het God hom laat sê wat sal gebeur. Kajafas het gesê Jesus sal sterf sodat die volk kan lewe. 52 Maar Jesus het nie net gesterf sodat die volk kan lewe nie, Hy het ook gesterf om die kinders van God bymekaar te bring, God se kinders wat in baie lande van die wêreld woon. 53 Van toe af het die Joodse leiers planne gemaak om Jesus dood te maak.

54 In die provinsie Judea het die Jode almal geweet waar Jesus is. Daarom het Hy nie daar gebly nie, Hy het weggegaan na die stad Efraim. Efraim was in ’n deel van die land naby die woestyn. Hy het daar gaan bly saam met sy tdissipels.
55 Dit was tyd vir die Joodse tPaasfees. Baie mense het na Jerusalem gegaan. Hulle het gegaan voor die Paasfees begin het, want hulle wou hulleself eers treinig.

56 Toe het die mense begin om vir Jesus te soek. Hulle het vir mekaar in die tempel gevra: “Wat dink julle? Sal Jesus na die Paasfees kom, of nie?”
57 Die priesterleiers en die Fariseërs het vir al die mense gesê: “As julle weet waar Jesus is, dan moet julle vir ons sê. Ons wil hom vang.”

John 11

Lazarus Dies

1 A man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.2 Mary would later pour perfume on the Lord. She would also wipe his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was sick in bed.3 So the sisters sent a message to Jesus. "Lord," they told him, "the one you love is sick."
4 When Jesus heard this, he said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory. God's Son will receive glory because of it."
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.6 But after he heard Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days.
7 Then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."
8 "But Rabbi," they said, "a short time ago the Jews tried to kill you with stones. Are you still going back there?"
9 Jesus answered, "Aren't there 12 hours of daylight? A person who walks during the day won't trip and fall. He can see because of this world's light.10 But when he walks at night, he'll trip and fall. He has no light."
11 After he said this, Jesus went on speaking to them. "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep," he said. "But I am going there to wake him up."
12 His disciples replied, "Lord, if he's sleeping, he will get better."
13 Jesus had been speaking about the death of Lazarus. But his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
14 So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead.15 For your benefit, I am glad I was not there. Now you will believe. But let us go to him."
16 Then Thomas, who was called Didymus, spoke to the rest of the disciples. "Let us go also," he said. "Then we can die with Jesus."

Jesus Comforts the Sisters

17 When Jesus arrived, he found out that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.18 Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem.19 Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary. They had come to comfort them because their brother was dead.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him. But Mary stayed at home.
21 "Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "I wish you had been here! Then my brother would not have died.22 But I know that even now God will give you anything you ask for."
23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
24 Martha answered, "I know he will rise again. This will happen when people are raised from the dead on the last day."
25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even if he dies.26 And those who live and believe in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
27 "Yes, Lord," she told him. "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God. I believe that you are the One who was supposed to come into the world."
28 After she said this, she went back home. She called her sister Mary to one side to talk to her. "The Teacher is here," Martha said. "He is asking for you."
29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.30 Jesus had not yet entered the village. He was still at the place where Martha had met him.31 Some Jews had been comforting Mary in the house. They noticed how quickly she got up and went out. So they followed her. They thought she was going to the tomb to cry there.
32 Mary reached the place where Jesus was. When she saw him, she fell at his feet. She said, "Lord, I wish you had been here! Then my brother would not have died."
33 Jesus saw her crying. He saw that the Jews who had come along with her were crying also. His spirit became very sad, and he was troubled.
34 "Where have you put him?" he asked.
"Come and see, Lord," they replied.
35 Jesus sobbed.
36 Then the Jews said, "See how much he loved him!"
37 But some of them said, "He opened the eyes of the blind man. Couldn't he have kept this man from dying?"

Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead

38 Once more Jesus felt very sad. He came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone in front of the entrance.
39 "Take away the stone," he said.
"But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the dead man, "by this time there is a bad smell. Lazarus has been in the tomb for four days."
40 Then Jesus said, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"
41 So they took away the stone.
Then Jesus looked up. He said, "Father, I thank you for hearing me.42 I know that you always hear me. But I said this for the benefit of the people standing here. I said it so they will believe that you sent me."
43 Then Jesus called in a loud voice. He said, "Lazarus, come out!"
44 The dead man came out. His hands and feet were wrapped with strips of linen. A cloth was around his face.
Jesus said to them, "Take off the clothes he was buried in and let him go."

The Plan to Kill Jesus

45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary saw what Jesus did. So they put their faith in him.
46 But some of them went to the Pharisees. They told the Pharisees what Jesus had done.47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.
"What can we do?" they asked. "This man is doing many miraculous signs.48 If we let him keep on doing this, everyone will believe in him. Then the Romans will come. They will take away our temple and our nation."
49 One of them spoke up. His name was Caiaphas. He was high priest at that time. He said, "You don't know anything at all!50 You don't realize what is good for you. It is better if one man dies for the people than if the whole nation is destroyed."
51 He did not say this on his own. But he was high priest at that time. So he told ahead of time that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation.52 He also prophesied that Jesus would die for God's children scattered everywhere. He would die to bring them together and make them one.
53 So from that day on, the Jewish rulers planned to kill Jesus.
54 Jesus no longer moved around openly among the Jews. Instead, he went away to an area near the desert. He went to a village called Ephraim. There he stayed with his disciples.
55 It was almost time for the Jewish Passover Feast. Many people went up from the country to Jerusalem. They went there for the special washing that would make them pure before the Passover Feast.56 They kept looking for Jesus as they stood in the temple area. They asked one another, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the Feast at all?"
57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders. They had commanded anyone who found out where Jesus was staying to report it. Then they could arrest him.
