Johannes 11

1 Es war aber ein Gewisser krank, Lazarus von Bethanien, aus dem Dorfe der Maria und ihrer Schwester Martha.2 (Maria aber war es, die den Herrn mit Salbe salbte und seine Füße mit ihren Haaren abtrocknete; deren Bruder Lazarus war krank.)3 Da sandten die Schwestern zu ihm und ließen ihm sagen: Herr, siehe, der, den du lieb hast, ist krank.4 Als aber Jesus es hörte, sprach er: Diese Krankheit ist nicht zum Tode, sondern um der Herrlichkeit Gottes willen, auf daß der Sohn Gottes durch sie verherrlicht werde.5 Jesus aber liebte die Martha und ihre Schwester und den Lazarus.6 Als er nun hörte, daß er krank sei, blieb er noch zwei Tage an dem Orte, wo er war.7 Danach spricht er dann zu den Jüngern: Laßt uns wieder nach Judäa gehen.8 Die Jünger sagen zu ihm: Rabbi, eben suchten die Juden dich zu steinigen, und wiederum gehst du dahin?9 Jesus antwortete: Sind der Stunden des Tages nicht zwölf? Wenn jemand am Tage wandelt, stößt er nicht an, weil er das Licht dieser Welt sieht;10 wenn aber jemand in der Nacht wandelt, stößt er an, weil das Licht nicht in ihm ist.11 Dies sprach er, und danach sagt er zu ihnen: Lazarus, unser Freund, ist eingeschlafen; aber ich gehe hin, auf daß ich ihn aufwecke.12 Da sprachen die Jünger zu ihm: Herr, wenn er eingeschlafen ist, so wird er geheilt werden.13 Jesus aber hatte von seinem Tode gesprochen; sie aber meinten, er rede von der Ruhe des Schlafes.14 Dann nun sagte ihnen Jesus gerade heraus: Lazarus ist gestorben;15 und ich bin froh um euretwillen, daß ich nicht dort war, auf daß ihr glaubet; aber laßt uns zu ihm gehen.16 Da sprach Thomas, der Zwilling genannt ist, zu den Mitjüngern: Laßt auch uns gehen, auf daß wir mit ihm sterben.17 Als nun Jesus kam, fand er ihn schon vier Tage in der Gruft liegen.18 Bethanien aber war nahe bei Jerusalem, etwa fünfzehn Stadien weit;19 und viele von den Juden waren zu Martha und Maria gekommen, auf daß sie dieselben über ihren Bruder trösteten.20 Martha nun, als sie hörte, daß Jesus komme, ging ihm entgegen. Maria aber saß im Hause.21 Da sprach Martha zu Jesu: Herr, wenn du hier gewesen wärest, so wäre mein Bruder nicht gestorben;22 aber auch jetzt weiß ich, daß, was irgend du von Gott bitten magst, Gott dir geben wird.23 Jesus spricht zu ihr: Dein Bruder wird auferstehen.24 Martha spricht zu ihm: Ich weiß, daß er auferstehen wird in der Auferstehung am letzten Tage.25 Jesus sprach zu ihr: Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben; wer an mich glaubt, wird leben, auch wenn er gestorben ist;26 und jeder, der da lebt und an mich glaubt, wird nicht sterben in Ewigkeit. Glaubst du dies?27 Sie spricht zu ihm: Ja, Herr, ich glaube, daß du der Christus bist, der Sohn Gottes, der in die Welt kommen soll.28 Und als sie dies gesagt hatte, ging sie hin und rief ihre Schwester Maria heimlich und sagte: Der Lehrer ist da und ruft dich.29 Als jene es hörte, steht sie schnell auf und geht zu ihm.30 Jesus aber war noch nicht in das Dorf gekommen, sondern war an dem Orte, wo Martha ihm begegnet war.31 Als nun die Juden, die bei ihr im Hause waren und sie trösteten, sahen, daß Maria schnell aufstand und hinausging, folgten sie ihr, indem sie sagten: Sie geht zur Gruft, auf daß sie daselbst weine.32 Als nun Maria dahin kam, wo Jesus war, und ihn sah, fiel sie ihm zu Füßen und sprach zu ihm: Herr, wenn du hier gewesen wärest, so wäre mein Bruder nicht gestorben.33 Als nun Jesus sie weinen sah, und die Juden weinen, die mit ihr gekommen waren, seufzte er tief im Geist und erschütterte sich34 und sprach: Wo habt ihr ihn hingelegt? Sie sagen zu ihm: Herr, komm und sieh!35 Jesus vergoß Tränen.36 Da sprachen die Juden: Siehe, wie lieb hat er ihn gehabt!37 Etliche aber von ihnen sagten: Konnte dieser, der die Augen des Blinden auftat, nicht machen, daß auch dieser nicht gestorben wäre?38 Jesus nun, wiederum tief in sich selbst seufzend, kommt zur Gruft. Es war aber eine Höhle, und ein Stein lag darauf.39 Jesus spricht: Nehmet den Stein weg. Die Schwester des Verstorbenen, Martha, spricht zu ihm: Herr, er riecht schon, denn er ist vier Tage hier.40 Jesus spricht zu ihr: Habe ich dir nicht gesagt, wenn du glauben würdest, so würdest du die Herrlichkeit Gottes sehen?41 Sie nahmen nun den Stein weg. Jesus aber hob die Augen empor und sprach: Vater, ich danke dir, daß du mich erhört hast.42 Ich aber wußte, daß du mich allezeit erhörst; doch um der Volksmenge willen, die umhersteht, habe ich es gesagt, auf daß sie glauben, daß du mich gesandt hast.43 Und als er dies gesagt hatte, rief er mit lauter Stimme: Lazarus, komm heraus!44 Und der Verstorbene kam heraus, an Füßen und Händen mit Grabtüchern gebunden, und sein Gesicht war mit einem Schweißtuch umbunden. Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Löset ihn auf und laßt ihn gehen.45 Viele nun von den Juden, die zu Maria gekommen waren und sahen, was er getan hatte, glaubten an ihn.46 Etliche aber von ihnen gingen hin zu den Pharisäern und sagten ihnen, was Jesus getan hatte.47 Da versammelten die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer ein Synedrium und sprachen: Was tun wir? Denn dieser Mensch tut viele Zeichen.48 Wenn wir ihn also lassen, werden alle an ihn glauben, und die Römer werden kommen und sowohl unseren Ort als auch unsere Nation wegnehmen.49 Ein Gewisser aber aus ihnen, Kajaphas, der jenes Jahr Hoherpriester war, sprach zu ihnen: Ihr wisset nichts,50 und überleget auch nicht, daß es euch nützlich ist, daß ein Mensch für das Volk sterbe und nicht die ganze Nation umkomme.51 Dies aber sagte er nicht aus sich selbst, sondern da er jenes Jahr Hoherpriester war, weissagte er, daß Jesus für die Nation sterben sollte;52 und nicht für die Nation allein, sondern auf daß er auch die zerstreuten Kinder Gottes in eins versammelte.53 Von jenem Tage an ratschlagten sie nun, auf daß sie ihn töteten.54 Jesus nun wandelte nicht mehr frei öffentlich unter den Juden, sondern ging von dannen hinweg in die Gegend nahe bei der Wüste, in eine Stadt, genannt Ephraim; und daselbst verweilte er mit den Jüngern.55 Es war aber nahe das Passah der Juden, und viele gingen aus dem Lande hinauf nach Jerusalem vor dem Passah, auf daß sie sich reinigten.56 Sie suchten nun Jesum und sprachen, im Tempel stehend, untereinander: Was dünkt euch? Daß er nicht zu dem Fest kommen wird?57 Es hatten aber die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer Befehl gegeben, daß, wenn jemand wisse, wo er sei, er es anzeigen solle, damit sie ihn griffen.

The Death of Lazarus

1 Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.t2 (Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oilt and wiped his feet dry with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)s3 So the sisters sent a messaget to Jesus,t “Lord, look, the one you love is sick.”4 When Jesus heard this, he said, “This sickness will not lead to death,ts but to God’s glory,t so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”s

5 (Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.)s
6 So when he heard that Lazarust was sick, he remained in the place where he was for two more days.7 Then after this, he said to his disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”s8 The disciples replied,t “Rabbi, the Jewish leaderst were just now tryingt to stone you to death! Aret you going there again?”9 Jesus replied,t “Are there not twelve hours in a day? If anyone walks around in the daytime, he does not stumble,t because he sees the light of this world.s

10 But if anyone walks around at night,t he stumbles,t because the light is not in him.”
11 After he said this, he added,t “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep.t But I am going there to awaken him.”12 Then the disciples replied,t “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”

13 (Now Jesus had been talking aboutt his death, but theyt thought he had been talking about real sleep.)ts
14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died,15 and I am gladt for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe.s But let us go to him.”

16 So Thomas (called Didymuss)s said to his fellow disciples, “Let us go too, so that we may die with him.”s

Speaking with Martha and Mary

17 Whent Jesus arrived,t he found that Lazarust had been in the tomb four days already.ts18 (Now Bethany was less than two milest from Jerusalem,s19 so many of the Jewish people of the regiont had come to Martha and Mary to console themt over the loss of their brother.)ts20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary was sitting in the house.s21 Marthat said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will grantt you.”s
23 Jesus replied,t “Your brother will come back to life again.”ts24 Martha said,t “I know that he will come back to life againt in the resurrection at the last day.”25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will livet even if he dies,26 and the one who lives and believes in me will never die.t Do you believe this?”

27 She replied,t “Yes, Lord, I believet that you are the Christ,ts the Son of God who comes into the world.”t
28 And when she had said this, Marthat went and called her sister Mary, saying privately,t “The Teacher is here and is asking for you.”t29 So when Maryt heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.30 (Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still in the place where Martha had come out to meet him.)

31 Then the peoplet who were with Maryt in the house consoling her saw hert get up quickly and go out. They followed her, because they thought she was going to the tomb to weept there.
32 Now when Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the peoplet who had come with her weeping, he was intensely movedt in spirit and greatly distressed.t34 He asked,t “Where have you laid him?”t They replied,t “Lord, come and see.”35 Jesus wept.s36 Thus the people who had come to mournt said, “Look how much he loved him!”

37 But some of them said, “This is the man who caused the blind man to see!t Couldn’t he have done something to keep Lazarust from dying?”

Lazarus Raised from the Dead

38 Jesus, intensely movedt again, came to the tomb. (Now it was a cave, and a stone was placed across it.)s39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”t Martha, the sister of the deceased,t replied, “Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell,t because he has been buriedt four days.”s40 Jesus responded,t “Didn’t I tell you that if you believe, you would see the glory of God?”41 So they took awayt the stone. Jesus looked upwardt and said, “Father, I thank you that you have listened to me.t42 I knew that you always listen to me,t but I said thist for the sake of the crowd standing around here, that they may believe that you sent me.”43 Whent he had said this, he shouted in a loud voice,s “Lazarus, come out!”

44 The one who had died came out, his feet and hands tied up with strips of cloth,s and a cloth wrapped around his face.t Jesus said to them, “Unwrap himt and let him go.”

The Response of the Jewish Leaders

45 Then many of the people,t who had come with Mary and had seen the things Jesust did, believed in him.46 But some of them went to the Phariseess and reported to themt what Jesus had done.47 So the chief priests and the Phariseest called the councilt together and said, “What are we doing? For this man is performing many miraculous signs.

48 If we allow him to go on in this way,t everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away our sanctuaryt and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said,t “You know nothing at all!50 You do not realizet that it is more to your advantage to have one mant die for the people than for the whole nation to perish.”s51 (Now he did not say this on his own,t but because he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the Jewish nation,t52 and not for the Jewish nationt only,s but to gather togethert into one the children of God who are scattered.)s

53 So from that day they planned together to kill him.
54 Thus Jesus no longer wentt around publiclyt among the Judeans,t but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim,t and stayed there with his disciples.55 Now the Jewish feast of Passovert was near, and many people went up to Jerusalems from the rural areas before the Passover to cleanse themselves ritually.t56 Thus they were looking for Jesus,t and saying to one another as they stood in the temple courts,t “What do you think? That he won’t come to the feast?”

57 (Now the chief priests and the Phariseest had given orders that anyone who knew where Jesust was should report it, so that they could arrestt him.)s
