Johannes 11

1 Ein Mann, mit Namen Lazarus,t lag krank. Der wohnte in Bethanien,t dem Dorf der Maria und ihrer Schwester Martha.t —2 Es war aber die Maria, die (später) den Herrn mit Öl salbte und seine Füße mit ihren Haaren abtrocknete;t deren Bruder Lazarus lag krank. —3 Da sandten seine Schwestern zu Jesus und ließen ihm sagen: "Herr, den du liebhast, der liegt jetzt krank."4 Als Jesus das vernahm, sprach er: "Diese Krankheit soll nicht dem Tod eine Beute geben, sondern sie dient zur Ehre Gottes: der Sohn Gottes soll dadurch verherrlicht werden."t5 Jesus liebtet Martha und ihre Schwester und Lazarus.6 Zunächst blieb er trotz der Nachricht von des Lazarus Krankheit noch zwei Tage an dem Ort, wo er sich aufhielt.t7 Dann erst sprach er zu seinen Jüngern: "Wir wollen wieder nach Judäa ziehen!"8 Seine Jünger erwiderten ihm: "Meister, eben erst haben dich die Juden steinigen wollen,t und nun willst du wieder dorthin gehen?"9 Darauf sagte Jesus: "Hat der Tag nicht zwölf Stunden? Wer bei Tag umhergeht, der stößt sich nicht; denn er sieht das Licht der Welt.t10 Wer aber des Nachts umhergeht, der stößt sich; denn da hat die Welt kein Licht."t11 So sprach er. Dann fuhr er fort: "Unser Freund Lazarus schläft; aber ich will hingehen, um ihn aufzuwecken."12 Da entgegneten ihm die Jünger: "Herr, wenn er schläft, so wird er wieder gesund."13 Jesus aber hatte des Lazarus Tod gemeint, während sie dachten, er rede von der Ruhe des Schlafes.14 Da sagte ihnen Jesus frei heraus:15 Lazarus ist tot; und euretwegen bin ich froh, daß ich nicht dagewesen bin, damit ihr glaubt. Nun aber laßt uns zu ihm gehen!"16 Da sprach Thomas mit dem Beinamen "Zwilling"t zu seinen Mitjüngern: "Ja, laßt auch uns hingehen, daß wir mit ihm sterben!"t17 Bei Jesu Ankunft lag Lazarus schon vier Tage im Grab.18 Da Bethanien kaum eine halbe Meilet von Jerusalem entfernt war,19 hatten sich viele Judent bei Martha und Maria eingefunden, um sie über den Tod ihres Bruders zu trösten.t20 Bei der Nachricht: "Jesus kommt!" ging Martha ihm entgegen, während Maria im Haus sitzen blieb.t21 Martha sprach zu Jesus: "Herr, wärst du hier gewesen, mein Bruder wäre nicht gestorben!22 Doch auch jetzt nocht weiß ich, daß Gott dir geben wird, was du von ihm erbittest."t23 Jesus antwortete ihr: "Dein Bruder wird auferstehen."24 Martha entgegnete ihm: "Ich weiß, daß er auferstehen wird bei der Auferstehung am Jüngsten Tag."t25 Jesus sprach zu ihr: "Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben. Wer an mich glaubt, der soll auch nach dem Tod leben.t26 Und wer in seinem Leben an mich glaubt, der soll nun und nimmer sterben.t Glaubst du das?"27 "Ja, Herr", versetzte sie, "ich glaube fest, daß du bist der Messias, der Sohn Gottes, der in der Welt erscheinen soll."28 Nach diesen Worten ging sie weg und rief ihre Schwester Maria, indem sie ihr heimlich zuflüsterte: "Der Meister ist da und ruft dich."29 Bei dieser Kunde stand Maria eilig auf und begab sich zu ihm.30 Jesus war nämlich noch nicht in das Dorf gekommen, sondern er war noch an der Stelle, wo ihn Martha getroffen hatte.31 Als nun die Juden, die bei Maria im Haus waren und sie zu trösten suchten, sie aufstehen und eilig hinausgehen sahen, da folgten sie ihr; denn sie meinten, sie gehe zum Grab, um dort zu weinen.32 Maria kam an den Ort, wo Jesus war. Als sie ihn sah, fiel sie ihm zu Füßen und sprach zu ihm: "Herr, wärst du hier gewesen, mein Bruder wäre nicht gestorben!"33 Als Jesus sie und auch die Juden, die sie begleiteten, laut weinen sah, ergrimmte er in seinem Geist,t so daß ihn schauderte.34 Dann fragte er:t "Wo habt ihr ihn beigesetzt?" Sie erwiderten ihm: "Herr, komm und sieh!"35 Jesus weinte still.36 Da sprachen die Juden: "Wie hat er ihn so liebgehabt!"37 Doch einige von ihnen sagten: "Konnte der Mann, der des Blinden Augen aufgetan hat, nicht auch verhindern, daß dieser starb?"38 Jesus, abermals ergrimmt in seinem Inneren,t trat an das Grab. Das war in einer Höhle; vor ihrem Eingang lag ein Stein.39 Jesus gebot: "Entfernt den Stein!" Martha, des Verstorbenen Schwester, sprach zu ihm: "Herr, er riecht schon nach Verwesung; er ist ja schon vier Tage tot."40 Jesus erwiderte ihr: "Habe ich dir nicht gesagt, du sollst, wenn du glaubst, die Herrlichkeit Gottes sehen?"41 Da entfernte man den Stein. Jesus aber hob seine Augen auf zum Himmel und sprach:42 "Vater, ich danke dir, daß du mich allezeit erhört hast. Ich wußte zwar, daß du mich allezeit erhörst. Doch um der Leute willen, die hier stehen, spreche ich diest offen aus, damit sie glauben, daß du mich gesandt hast."43 Nach diesen Worten rief er mit lauter Stimme: "Lazarus, komm heraus!"44 Da kam der Tote heraus, Füße und Hände mit Binden umwickelt und das Gesicht mit einem Schweißtuch verhüllt. Jesus sprach zu den Umstehenden: "Nehmt ihm die Binden ab und laßt ihn gehen!"45 Viele nun von den Juden, die zu Maria gekommen waren und Jesu Tat gesehen hatten, wurden an ihn gläubig.46 Aber einige von ihnen gingen zu den Pharisäern und erzählten ihnen, was Jesus getan hatte.47 Da beriefen die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer eine Versammlung des Hohen Rates und sprachen: "Was ist zu tun? Dies Menschen tut viele Wunderzeichen.48 Wenn wir ihn noch weiter gewähren lassen, so werden alle an ihn glauben. Dannt aber kommen die Römer und räumen auf mit unserer Stadt und unserem Volk."49 Einer aber aus ihrem Kreis, Kaiphas, der in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war, sprach zu ihnen: "Euch fehlt's an Einsicht.50 Darum bedenkt ihr auch nicht, daß es besser für euch ist, wenn ein Mensch für das Volk stirbt, als wenn das ganze Volk zugrunde geht."t51 So redete er aber nicht aus eigener Überlegung; sondern weil er in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war, weissagte er (unbewußt), Jesus solle sterben für das (jüdische) Volk,52 doch nicht allein für dieses Volk, sondern auch, um die (in der Heidenwelt) zerstreuten Kinder Gottest zu einer Einheit zu verbinden.53 Seit jenem Tag berieten sie darüber, ihn zu töten.54 Jesus zeigte sich deshalbt nicht mehr frei und offen unter den Juden,t sondern er zog sich von da in die Gegend nahe bei der Wüstet zurück und begab sich in eine Stadt, mit Namen Ephraim;t dort hielt er sich mit seinen Jüngern auf.55 Es war aber kurz vor dem jüdischen Passahfest. Viele aus jener Gegend zogen noch vor dem Passah nach Jerusalem, um sich dort zu reinigen.t56 Die forschten auch nach Jesus, und als sie auf dem Tempelplatz zusammenstanden, fragten sie einander: "Was meint ihr? Er wird wohl nicht zum Fest kommen?"57 Die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer hatten nämlich den Befehl gegeben: wer wisse, wo er sich aufhalte, der solle davon Anzeige machen; denn sie wollten ihn gefangennehmen lassen.

1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.2 And it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.3 The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was.7 Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.8 The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.11 These things spake he: and after this he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.12 The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover.13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep.14 Then Jesus therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.20 Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house.21 Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.22 And even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live;26 and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, even he that cometh into the world.28 And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is here, and calleth thee.29 And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him.30 (Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.)31 The Jews then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going unto the tomb to weep there.32 Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,34 and said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see.35 Jesus wept.36 The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!37 But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die?38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.39 Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been dead four days.40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God?41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me.42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me.43 And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.44 He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.45 Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him.46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs.48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,50 nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.51 Now this he said not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad.53 So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples.55 Now the passover of the Jews was at hand: and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, to purify themselves.56 They sought therefore for Jesus, and spake one with another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? That he will not come to the feast?57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it, that they might take him.
