János 11

Lázár halála

1 Betániában élt egy Lázár nevű férfi, aki megbetegedett. Volt két testvére, Márta és Mária.

2 Mária volt az, aki illatos olajjal kente meg az Urat, és a hajával törölte meg az Úr lábát.

3 Lázár nővérei megüzenték Jézusnak: „Uram, a barátod, akit szeretsz, beteg.”

4 Amikor Jézusnak átadták az üzenetet, ezt mondta: „Ez a betegség nem halálos, hanem Isten dicsőségét szolgálja. Ezáltal az Isten Fia fog dicsőséget kapni.”

5 Jézus valóban szerette Mártát, és nővérét Máriát, és Lázárt.

6 Amikor tehát Jézusnak megmondták, hogy Lázár beteg, még két napig ugyanazon a helyen maradt.

7 Azután ezt mondta a tanítványainak: „Menjünk ismét Júdeába!”

8 Azok ezt válaszolták: „Mester, hiszen csak nemrégen volt, hogy meg akartak kövezni a zsidó vezetők, és újra oda akarsz menni?”

9 Jézus így válaszolt: „Ugye tizenkét óráig tart a nappal? Ezért aki nappal jár, az nem botlik meg, mert a világ világossága fénylik.

10 De aki éjjel jár, az megbotlik, mert nincs ami világítson neki.”

11 Azután ezt mondta: „A barátunk, Lázár elaludt, de én odamegyek és felébresztem.”

12 A tanítványok ezt válaszolták: „Uram, ha alszik, akkor biztosan meggyógyul majd.”

13 Jézus Lázár haláláról beszélt, de a tanítványok úgy értették, hogy Lázár csak alszik.

14 Jézus ezért nyíltan megmondta nekik: „Lázár meghalt.

15 De örülök, hogy nem voltam ott, mert számotokra így a jobb: hogy higgyetek bennem. Most azonban menjünk el hozzá!”

16 Ekkor Tamás, akit Ikernek hívtak, ezt mondta a többi tanítványnak: „Menjünk, és haljunk meg Jézussal együtt mi is!”

Jézus Betániában

17 Amikor Jézus megérkezett Betániába, megtudta, hogy Lázár már négy napja a sírban van.

18 Mivel ez a falu csak három kilométerre volt Jeruzsálemtől,

19 sokan elmentek Mártához és Máriához, hogy vigasztalják őket a testvérük halála miatt.

20 Amikor Márta meghallotta, hogy Jézus közeledik, eléje sietett, Mária pedig otthon maradt.

21 Mikor Márta Jézushoz ért, ezt mondta: „Uram, ha itt lettél volna, nem halt volna meg a testvérem!

22 Én azonban így is tudom, hogy bármit kérsz Istentől, ő megadja neked.”

23 Jézus ezt felelte: „A testvéred fel fog támadni.”

24 „Igen, tudom, hogy a feltámadás idején, az utolsó napon, ő is fel fog támadni” —válaszolta Márta.

25 Jézus azonban ezt mondta: „Én vagyok a Feltámadás és az Élet. Aki hisz bennem, akkor is él, ha már meghalt.

26 Aki pedig él és hisz bennem, az soha nem hal meg. Hiszed ezt?”

27 Márta pedig így válaszolt: „Igen, Uram! Hiszem, hogy te vagy a Krisztus, az Isten Fia, akinek el kellett jönnie erre a világra.”

Jézus sír

28 Miután ezt mondta, Márta elment, és félrehívta nővérét, Máriát. Mikor csak ketten voltak, szólt neki: „Itt van a Mester, és téged hív!”

29 Ekkor Mária, sietve Jézushoz ment,

30 aki még mindig a falu szélén volt, ahol Mártával találkozott.

31 A gyászolók, akik Máriához jöttek, hogy vigasztalják, látták, hogy Mária gyorsan felkel, és elindul. Azt hitték, hogy Lázár sírjához megy, hogy ott sírjon, ezért ők is utána mentek.

32 Amikor Mária Jézushoz ért, a lábához borult, és ezt mondta: „Uram, ha itt lettél volna, nem halt volna meg a testvérem!”

33 Mária és a kísérői is sírtak. Amikor Jézus ezt látta, szelleme nyugtalan lett, és mélyen megindulva

34 kérdezte: „Hová temettétek Lázárt?”
„Uram, gyere, és nézd meg!” — felelték.

35 Ekkor Jézus sírva fakadt.

36 Az emberek azt mondták: „Nézzétek, mennyire szerette Lázárt!”

37 Mások pedig ezt mondták: „Ha meg tudta gyógyítani a vakot, akkor Lázárt is megmenthette volna a haláltól.”

Lázár feltámad

38 Jézus még mindig nagyon felindult volt, amikor odament a sírhoz, amely sziklába vájt üreg volt, a bejáratát pedig nagy kő zárta el.

39 „Hengerítsétek el a követ!” - mondta Jézus.
Márta, a halott Lázár nővére közbeszólt: „De Uram, már biztosan rossz szaga van, hiszen négy napja, hogy meghalt!”

40 Jézus így válaszolt: „Emlékszel? Megígértem neked, ha hiszel, meglátod Isten dicsőségét!”

41 Ekkor elhengerítették a követ, Jézus, pedig felnézett az égre, és ezt mondta: „Atyám, köszönöm, hogy meghallgattál!

42 Tudom, hogy te mindig meghallgatsz, de azok kedvéért mondom ezt, akik itt állnak. Azt akarom, hogy elhiggyék, hogy te küldtél engem.”

43 Ezután hangosan felkiáltott: „Lázár, gyere ki!”

44 Ekkor Lázár, aki halott volt, kijött a sziklába vágott sírkamrából. Keze és lába vászonlepedőkkel volt körültekerve, arcát, pedig kendő takarta.
„Szabadítsátok ki a vásznakból, hadd menjen!” - mondta Jézus.

A zsidó vezetők meg akarják ölni Jézust

45 Ennek hatására sokan hittek benne azok közül a zsidók közül, akik Máriát a sírhoz kísérték, és látták, amit Jézus tett.

46 Néhányan közülük elmentek a farizeusokhoz, és nekik is elmondták, hogy Jézus feltámasztotta Lázárt.

47 Emiatt a főpapok és a farizeusok összehívták a Főtanácsot. Amikor összegyűltek, ezt kérdezték egymástól: „Most mit tegyünk? Ez az ember tényleg sok csodát tesz!

48 Ha engedjük, hogy ezt folytassa, a végén mindenki hinni fog benne! Azután majd jönnek a rómaiak, lerombolják a Templomunkat és elpusztítják népünket!”

49 Akkor Kajafás, a Főtanács egyik tagja, aki abban az évben a főpap volt, ezt mondta: „Ti nem tudtok semmit!

50 Nem értitek, hogy jobb, ha csak egy ember hal meg a népért, mintha egész nemzetünk elpusztul?!”

51 De ezt nem magától mondta, hanem prófétált, mivel abban az évben ő volt a főpap. Ez a prófécia azt jelentette, hogy Jézusnak meg kell halnia a népéért.

52 De nem csak a zsidó népért, hanem Isten gyermekeiért is, akik az egész világon szerteszét mindenfelé élnek. Igen, meg kell halnia, hogy Istennek ezeket a szétszóródott gyermekeit összegyűjtse, és eggyé tegye.

53 Ettől a naptól kezdve a zsidó vezetők arra törekedtek, hogy Jézust megöljék.

54 Emiatt Jézus többé nem mutatkozott nyilvánosan a zsidók között. Tanítványaival együtt elvonult egy pusztához közeli városba, Efraimba.

55 Közeledett a zsidók nagy ünnepe, a pászka. Ezért vidékről sokan felmentek Jeruzsálembe, hogy még az ünnep előtt elvégezzék a megtisztulási szertartást.

56 A Templom területén nagy tömeg gyűlt össze. Az emberek keresték Jézust, és egymástól kérdezgették: „Mit gondoltok? Talán nem is jön fel az ünnepre?”

57 A főpapok és a farizeusok pedig kiadták a parancsot, hogy ha valaki tudja, hol van Jézus, azonnal jelentse. Ugyanis le akarták tartóztatni őt.

The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus

1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.2 It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.3 So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick."4 But when Jesus heard this, He said, "This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it."5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.6 So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was.7 Then after this He *said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again."8 The disciples *said to Him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and are You going there again?"9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."11 This He said, and after that He *said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep."12 The disciples then said to Him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep.14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead,15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him."16 Therefore Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, so that we may die with Him."

17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off;19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.20 Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house.21 Martha then said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.22 Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You."23 Jesus *said to her, "Your brother will rise again."24 Martha *said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?"27 She *said to Him, "Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world."

28 When she had said this, she went away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you."29 And when she heard it, she *got up quickly and was coming to Him.

30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him.31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.32 Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died."33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,34 and said, "Where have you laid him?" They *said to Him, "Lord, come and see."35 Jesus wept.36 So the Jews were saying, "See how He loved him!"37 But some of them said, "Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also from dying?"

38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.39 Jesus *said, "Remove the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, "Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days."40 Jesus *said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.42 I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me."43 When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth."44 The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him.46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

Conspiracy to Kill Jesus

47 Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and were saying, "What are we doing? For this man is performing many signs.48 If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,50 nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."51 Now he did not say this on his own initiative, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.53 So from that day on they planned together to kill Him.

54 Therefore Jesus no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover to purify themselves.56 So they were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?"57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him.
