Yohanes 11

Kematian Lazarus

1 Ada seorang yang bernama Lazarus. Ia sedang sakit. Ia tinggal di Betania. Di kampung itulah Maria dan adiknya, Marta tinggal.2 Marialah perempuan yang pernah meminyakit kaki Yesus dengan minyak mur dan mengeringkannya dengan rambutnya.3 Lazarus yang sedang sakit itu adalah saudara Maria. Maka Maria dan Marta menyuruh orang untuk memberi kabar kepada Yesus, "Tuhan, sahabat-Mu yang Engkau kasihi sedang sakit."4 Ketika Yesus mendengar kabar itu, Ia berkata, "Penyakit itu tidak akan membawa kematian, tetapi akan menyatakan kemuliaan Allah. Oleh penyakit itu Anak Allah akan dimuliakan."5 Yesus memang mengasihi Marta, Maria, dan Lazarus.6 Meskipun demikian, setelah Yesus mendengar kabar bahwa Lazarus sakit, Ia sengaja tinggal dua hari lagi di tempat Ia berada.7 Dua hari kemudian Dia berkata kepada murid-murid-Nya, "Kita harus kembali ke Yudea."8 Murid-murid-Nya menjawab, "Guru, belum lama ini orang Yahudi di Yudea mencoba melempar Engkau dengan batu. Sekarang Engkau ingin kembali ke sana?"9 Jawab Yesus, "Ada 12 jam terang dalam satu hari. Orang yang berjalan pada siang hari akan melihat terang dunia ini. Sebab itu, kakinya tidak akan terantuk.10 Jika ia berjalan pada malam hari, kakinya akan terantuk, karena tidak ada terang yang membantunya untuk melihat."11 Sesudah itu Yesus berkata kepada mereka, "Lazarus, saudara kita, sedang tidur sekarang. Aku akan pergi ke sana untuk membangunkan dia dari tidurnya."12 Para murid-Nya menjawab, "Tuhan, jika Lazarus dapat tidur, ia akan sembuh."13 Maksud Yesus ialah Lazarus telah meninggal. Murid-murid-Nya menyangka Yesus berkata tentang tidur dalam arti biasa.14 Oleh sebab itu, Yesus berkata dengan terus-terang, "Lazarus sudah meninggal.15 Tetapi Aku bersyukur, karena Aku tidak hadir pada waktu itu. Hal itu lebih baik bagimu sebab kamu dapat belajar untuk percaya. Marilah kita pergi kepadanya sekarang."16 Lalu Tomas, yang disebut Didimus, berkata kepada murid-murid yang lain, "Kita juga pergi supaya kita mati bersama Yesus."

Yesus di Betania

17 Yesus tiba di Betania, dan mendapati Lazarus telah meninggal selama empat hari. Lazarus telah dibaringkan di dalam kuburnya.18 Betania kira-kira dua kilometer jauhnya dari Yerusalem.19 Banyak orang Yahudi datang kepada Marta dan Maria untuk menghibur mereka karena kematian Lazarus, saudara mereka.20 Marta mendengar bahwa Yesus telah datang. Ia pergi keluar untuk menyambut Yesus, tetapi Maria tinggal di rumah.21 Marta berkata kepada Yesus, "Tuhan, jika Engkau ada di sini, saudaraku pasti tidak meninggal.22 Tetapi aku tahu, bahwa sekarang pun Allah akan memberikan kepada-Mu segala sesuatu yang Engkau minta kepada-Nya."23 Jawab Yesus, "Saudaramu akan bangkit dan hidup kembali."24 Kata Marta kepada-Nya, "Aku tahu bahwa ia akan bangkit untuk hidup kembali apabila orang dibangkitkan pada akhir zaman."25 Yesus berkata kepadanya, "Akulah kebangkitant dan hidup. Barangsiapa percaya kepada-Ku, ia akan hidup setelah dia meninggal.26 Orang yang percaya dan hidup dalam Aku tidak akan pernah sungguh-sungguh mati. Marta, percayakah engkau akan hal itu?"27 Marta menjawab, "Ya, Tuhan. Aku percaya bahwa Engkaulah Kristus,t Anak Allah, yang telah datang ke dunia ini."

Yesus Menangis

28 Sesudah Marta berkata demikian, dia kembali dan memanggil Maria, saudaranya. Marta berbisik kepada Maria, "Guru ada di sana. Ia memanggilmu."29 Setelah mendengar itu, Maria berdiri dan segera menjumpai Yesus.30 Waktu itu Yesus belum sampai ke Betania. Ia masih berada di tempat Marta menjumpai-Nya.31 Ada orang Yahudi di rumah Maria. Mereka datang untuk menghiburnya. Mereka melihat bahwa Maria berdiri dan segera pergi ke luar. Mereka menyangka bahwa Maria akan pergi ke kubur Lazarus untuk menangis. Jadi, mereka mengikutinya.32 Maria pergi ke tempat Yesus berada. Ketika melihat Yesus, Maria sujud di depan kaki Yesus. Maria berkata, "Tuhan, sekiranya Engkau ada di sini, saudaraku tidak harus meninggal."33 Yesus melihat Maria menangis. Yesus melihat orang Yahudi yang datang bersama Maria. Mereka juga ikut menangis. Yesus merasa terharu dan sedih. Kemudian Dia berkata,

34 "Di manakah Lazarus kamu kuburkan?"
Jawab mereka, "Tuhan, ikutlah dan lihatlah!"35 Menangislah Yesus.36 Orang Yahudi itu berkata, "Lihatlah betapa sayang Dia kepada Lazarus."37 Tetapi beberapa orang di antara mereka berkata, "Ia dapat menyembuhkan mata orang buta. Mengapa Ia tidak membantu Lazarus supaya Lazarus tidak meninggal?"38 Hati Yesus menjadi sangat terharu.

Yesus Membangkitkan Lazarus

39 Yesus berkata, "Angkat batu itu!"
Marta, saudara Lazarus, berkata kepada Yesus, "Tuhan, Lazarus sudah empat hari meninggal. Tubuhnya pasti sudah membusuk dan berbau."40 Jawab Yesus, "Aku sudah mengatakan kepadamu jika engkau percaya, engkau akan melihat kemuliaan Allah!"41 Jadi, mereka mengangkat batu yang menutupi kubur itu. Kemudian Yesus menengadah ke atas dan berkata, "Bapa, Aku mengucap syukur kepada-Mu karena Engkau telah mendengarkan Aku.42 Aku tahu bahwa Engkau selalu mendengarkan Aku, tetapi Aku mengatakan itu, karena orang banyak yang berada di sekeliling-Ku di sini. Aku mau supaya mereka percaya, bahwa Engkaulah yang telah mengutus Aku."43 Sesudah berkata demikian, berserulah Yesus dengan suara kuat, "Lazarus, keluarlah!"44 Orang yang telah meninggal itu pun keluar. Kaki dan tangannya masih terikat dengan kain kapan. Wajahnya juga masih tertutup dengan sapu tangan. Yesus berkata kepada orang yang ada di situ, "Bukalah kain-kain itu dan biarkan dia pergi."

Pemimpin Yahudi Ingin Membunuh Yesus

45 Banyak orang Yahudi datang melawat Maria. Mereka menyaksikan sendiri yang dilakukan oleh Yesus. Mereka menjadi percaya kepada-Nya.46 Tetapi ada orang Yahudi yang pergi kepada orang Farisi,t untuk menceritakan kepada mereka yang telah dilakukan oleh Yesus.47 Lalu imam-imam kepala dan orang Farisi memanggil Mahkamah Agama untuk berkumpul. Mereka berkata, "Apa yang harus kita lakukan? Orang itu melakukan banyak mukjizat.48 Apabila hal itu kita biarkan, maka semua orang akan percaya kepada-Nya. Dan orang Roma akan datang untuk merampas Baitt serta bangsa kita."49 Seorang di antara mereka bernama Kayafas, imam besart pada tahun itu. Ia berkata kepada mereka, "Kamu tidak tahu apa-apa!50 Lebih baik jika satu orang mati untuk seluruh bangsa daripada seluruh bangsa binasa, tetapi kamu tidak menyadari hal itu."51 Kayafas tidak mengatakan hal itu dari dirinya sendiri. Dia imam besar pada tahun itu. Jadi, sesungguhnya Kayafas bernubuat,t bahwa Yesus akan mati untuk bangsa itu.52 Yesus tidak mati hanya untuk bangsa Yahudi, tetapi juga untuk anak-anak Allah yang berserak di seluruh dunia. Yesus mati untuk mengumpulkan dan mempersatukan mereka.53 Sejak hari itu mereka berencana untuk membunuh Yesus.54 Karena itu, Yesus tidak lagi muncul secara terang-terangan di depan orang Yahudi. Yesus meninggalkan Yerusalem dan pergi ke sebuah kota dekat padang gurun. Kota itu bernama Efraim. Di kota itulah Yesus tinggal bersama murid-murid-Nya.55 Pada waktu itu hari raya Paskaht orang Yahudi sudah dekat. Banyak orang dari negeri itu berangkat ke Yerusalem sebelum hari raya Paskah. Mereka menyucikan diri untuk menyambut hari raya Paskah.56 Mereka mencari Yesus. Sambil berdiri di pelataran Bait, mereka berkata satu sama lain, "Apakah Yesus datang ke pesta? Bagaimanakah pendapatmu?"57 Sementara itu imam-imam kepala dan orang Farisi telah mengeluarkan perintah mengenai Yesus. Mereka memerintahkan agar setiap orang yang tahu tempat Yesus berada segera melapor. Dengan demikian, mereka dapat menangkap-Nya.

John 11

The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus

1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.2 It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.3 So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick."4 But when Jesus heard this, He said, "This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it."5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.6 So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was.7 Then after this He *said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again."8 The disciples *said to Him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and are You going there again?"9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."11 This He said, and after that He *said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep."12 The disciples then said to Him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep.14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead,15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him."16 Therefore Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, so that we may die with Him."

17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off;19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.20 Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house.21 Martha then said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.22 Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You."23 Jesus *said to her, "Your brother will rise again."24 Martha *said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?"27 She *said to Him, "Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world."

28 When she had said this, she went away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you."29 And when she heard it, she *got up quickly and was coming to Him.

30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him.31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.32 Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died."33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,34 and said, "Where have you laid him?" They *said to Him, "Lord, come and see."35 Jesus wept.36 So the Jews were saying, "See how He loved him!"37 But some of them said, "Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also from dying?"

38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.39 Jesus *said, "Remove the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, "Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days."40 Jesus *said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.42 I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me."43 When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth."44 The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him.46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

Conspiracy to Kill Jesus

47 Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and were saying, "What are we doing? For this man is performing many signs.48 If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,50 nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."51 Now he did not say this on his own initiative, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.53 So from that day on they planned together to kill Him.

54 Therefore Jesus no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover to purify themselves.56 So they were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?"57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him.
