María unge a Jesús en Betania

1 Seis días antes de la Pascua llegó Jesús a Betania, donde vivía Lázaro, a quien Jesús había *resucitado. 2 Allí se dio una cena en honor de Jesús. Marta servía, y Lázaro era uno de los que estaban a la mesa con él. 3 María tomó entonces como medio litro de nardo puro, que era un perfume muy caro, y lo derramó sobre los pies de Jesús, secándoselos luego con sus cabellos. Y la casa se llenó de la fragancia del perfume.
4 Judas Iscariote, que era uno de sus discípulos y que más tarde lo traicionaría, objetó:
5 —¿Por qué no se vendió este perfume, que vale muchísimo dinero,s para dárselo a los pobres?
6 Dijo esto, no porque se interesara por los pobres sino porque era un ladrón y, como tenía a su cargo la bolsa del dinero, acostumbraba robarse lo que echaban en ella.
7 —Déjala en paz —respondió Jesús—. Ella ha estado guardando este perfume para el día de mi sepultura.s 8 A los pobres siempre los tendrán con ustedes, pero a mí no siempre me tendrán.
9 Mientras tanto, muchos de los judíos se enteraron de que Jesús estaba allí, y fueron a ver no sólo a Jesús sino también a Lázaro, a quien Jesús había resucitado. 10 Entonces los jefes de los sacerdotes resolvieron matar también a Lázaro, 11 pues por su causa muchos se apartaban de los judíos y creían en Jesús.

La entrada triunfal

12 Al día siguiente muchos de los que habían ido a la fiesta se enteraron de que Jesús se dirigía a Jerusalén; 13 tomaron ramas de palma y salieron a recibirlo, gritando a voz en cuello:
—¡Hosanna! —¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!s
—¡Bendito el Rey de Israel! 14 Jesús encontró un burrito y se montó en él, como dice la Escritura:
15 «No temas, oh hija de Sión;
mira, que aquí viene tu rey, montado sobre un burrito.»s
16 Al principio, sus discípulos no entendieron lo que sucedía. Sólo después de que Jesús fue glorificado se dieron cuenta de que se había cumplido en él lo que de él ya estaba escrito.
17 La gente que había estado con Jesús cuando él llamó a Lázaro del sepulcro y lo resucitó de entre los muertos, seguía difundiendo la noticia. 18 Muchos que se habían enterado de la señal realizada por Jesús salían a su encuentro. 19 Por eso los *fariseos comentaban entre sí: «Como pueden ver, así no vamos a lograr nada. ¡Miren cómo lo sigue todo el mundo!»

Jesús predice su muerte

20 Entre los que habían subido a adorar en la fiesta había algunos *griegos. 21 Éstos se acercaron a Felipe, que era de Betsaida de Galilea, y le pidieron:
—Señor, queremos ver a Jesús. 22 Felipe fue a decírselo a Andrés, y ambos fueron a decírselo a Jesús.
23 —Ha llegado la hora de que el Hijo del hombre sea glorificado —les contestó Jesús—. 24 Ciertamente les aseguro que si el grano de trigo no cae en tierra y muere, se queda solo. Pero si muere, produce mucho fruto. 25 El que se apega a su *vida la pierde; en cambio, el que aborrece su vida en este mundo, la conserva para la vida eterna. 26 Quien quiera servirme, debe seguirme; y donde yo esté, allí también estará mi siervo. A quien me sirva, mi Padre lo honrará.
27 »Ahora todo mi ser está angustiado, ¿y acaso voy a decir: “Padre, sálvame de esta hora difícil”? ¡Si precisamente para afrontarla he venido! 28 ¡Padre, glorifica tu nombre!
Se oyó entonces, desde el cielo, una voz que decía: «Ya lo he glorificado, y volveré a glorificarlo.» 29 La multitud que estaba allí, y que oyó la voz, decía que había sido un trueno; otros decían que un ángel le había hablado.
30 —Esa voz no vino por mí sino por ustedes —dijo Jesús—. 31 El juicio de este mundo ha llegado ya, y el príncipe de este mundo va a ser expulsado. 32 Pero yo, cuando sea levantado de la tierra, atraeré a todos a mí mismo.
33 Con esto daba Jesús a entender de qué manera iba a morir.
34 —De la ley hemos sabido —le respondió la gente— que el *Cristo permanecerá para siempre; ¿cómo, pues, dices que el Hijo del hombre tiene que ser levantado? ¿Quién es ese Hijo del hombre?
35 —Ustedes van a tener la luz sólo un poco más de tiempo —les dijo Jesús—. Caminen mientras tienen la luz, antes de que los envuelvan las tinieblas. El que camina en las tinieblas no sabe a dónde va. 36 Mientras tienen la luz, crean en ella, para que sean hijos de la luz.
Cuando terminó de hablar, Jesús se fue y se escondió de ellos.

Los judíos siguen en su incredulidad

37 A pesar de haber hecho Jesús todas estas señales en presencia de ellos, todavía no creían en él. 38 Así se cumplió lo dicho por el profeta Isaías:
«Señor, ¿quién ha creído a nuestro mensaje, y a quién se le ha revelado el poder del Señor?»s
39 Por eso no podían creer, pues también había dicho Isaías:
40 «Les ha cegado los ojos
y endurecido el corazón, para que no vean con los ojos, ni entiendan con el corazón ni se conviertan; y yo los sane.»s
41 Esto lo dijo Isaías porque vio la gloria de Jesús y habló de él. 42 Sin embargo, muchos de ellos, incluso de entre los jefes, creyeron en él, pero no lo confesaban porque temían que los *fariseos los expulsaran de la sinagoga. 43 Preferían recibir honores de los hombres más que de parte de Dios.
44 «El que cree en mí —clamó Jesús con voz fuerte—, cree no sólo en mí sino en el que me envió. 45 Y el que me ve a mí, ve al que me envió. 46 Yo soy la luz que ha venido al mundo, para que todo el que crea en mí no viva en tinieblas.
47 »Si alguno escucha mis palabras, pero no las obedece, no seré yo quien lo juzgue; pues no vine a juzgar al mundo sino a salvarlo. 48 El que me rechaza y no acepta mis palabras tiene quien lo juzgue. La palabra que yo he proclamado lo condenará en el día final. 49 Yo no he hablado por mi propia cuenta; el Padre que me envió me ordenó qué decir y cómo decirlo. 50 Y sé muy bien que su mandato es vida eterna. Así que todo lo que digo es lo que el Padre me ha ordenado decir.»

JOHN 12

At Bethany

(Matthew 26.6-13; Mark 14.3-9)

1 Six days before Passover Jesus went back to Bethany, where he had raised Lazarus from death.

2 A meal had been prepared for Jesus. Martha was doing the serving, and Lazarus himself was there.

3  t Mary took a very expensive bottle of perfumet and poured it on Jesus' feet. She wiped them with her hair, and the sweet smell of the perfume filled the house.
4 A disciple named Judas Iscariott was there. He was the one who was going to betray Jesus, and he asked, 5 “Why wasn't this perfume sold for 300 silver coins and the money given to the poor?”

6 Judas did not really care about the poor. He asked this because he carried the moneybag and sometimes would steal from it.
7 Jesus replied, “Leave her alone! She has kept this perfume for the day of my burial.

8 t You will always have the poor with you, but you won't always have me.”

A Plot To Kill Lazarus

11 He was the reason that many of the people were turning from them and putting their faith in Jesus.

Jesus Enters Jerusalem

(Matthew 21.1-11; Mark 11.1-11; Luke 19.28-40)

13 t they took palm branches and went out to greet him.t They shouted,
“Hooray!t
God bless the one who comes
in the name of the Lord!
God bless the King
of Israel!”

14 Jesus found a donkey and rode on it, just as the Scriptures say,

15  t “People of Jerusalem,
don't be afraid!
Your King is now coming,
and he is riding
on a donkey.”

16 At first, Jesus' disciples did not understand. But after he had been given his glory, t they remembered all this. Everything had happened exactly as the Scriptures said it would.
17-18 A crowd had come to meet Jesus because they had seen him call Lazarus out of the tomb. They kept talking about him and this miracle.t

19 But the Pharisees said to each other, “There is nothing we can do! Everyone in the world is following Jesus.”

22 Philip told Andrew. Then the two of them went to Jesus and told him.

The Son of Man //Must Be Lifted Up

23 Jesus said:
The time has come for the Son of Man to be given his glory.t 24 I tell you for certain that a grain of wheat that falls on the ground will never be more than one grain unless it dies. But if it dies, it will produce lots of wheat. 25 t If you love your life, you will lose it. If you give it up in this world, you will be given eternal life.

26 If you serve me, you must go with me. My servants will be with me wherever I am. If you serve me, my Father will honor you.
27 Now I am deeply troubled, and I don't know what to say. But I must not ask my Father to keep me from this time of suffering. In fact, I came into the world to suffer.

28 So Father, bring glory to yourself.
A voice from heaven then said, “I have already brought glory to myself, and I will do it again!”

29 When the crowd heard the voice, some of them thought it was thunder. Others thought an angel had spoken to Jesus.
30 Then Jesus told the crowd, “That voice spoke to help you, not me. 31 This world's people are now being judged, and the ruler of this worldt is already being thrown out! 32 If I am lifted up above the earth, I will make everyone want to come to me.”

33 Jesus was talking about the way he would be put to death.

34  t The crowd said to Jesus, “The Scriptures teach that the Messiah will live forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
35 Jesus answered, “The light will be with you for only a little longer. Walk in the light while you can. Then you won't be caught walking blindly in the dark.

36 Have faith in the light while it is with you, and you will be children of the light.”

The People Refuse //To Have Faith in Jesus

38 t This happened so that what the prophet Isaiah had said would come true,
“Lord, who has believed
our message?
And who has seen
your mighty strength?”

39 The people could not have faith in Jesus, because Isaiah had also said,

40  t “The Lord has blinded
the eyes of the people,
and he has made
the people stubborn.
He did this so that they
could not see
or understand,
and so that they
would not turn to the Lord
and be healed.”
41 Isaiah said this, because he saw the glory of Jesus and spoke about him.t 42 Even then, many of the leaders put their faith in Jesus, but they did not tell anyone about it. The Pharisees had already given orders for the people not to have anything to do with anyone who had faith in Jesus.

43 And besides, the leaders liked praise from others more than they liked praise from God.

Jesus Came To Save //the World

44 In a loud voice Jesus said:
Everyone who has faith in me also has faith in the one who sent me. 45 And everyone who has seen me has seen the one who sent me.

46 I am the light that has come into the world. No one who has faith in me will stay in the dark.
47 I am not the one who will judge those who refuse to obey my teachings. I came to save the people of this world, not to be their judge. 48 But everyone who rejects me and my teachings will be judged on the last dayt by what I have said. 49 I don't speak on my own. I say only what the Father who sent me has told me to say. 50 I know that his commands will bring eternal life. This is why I tell you exactly what the Father has told me.
