Johannes 13

1 Die paasfees was net om die draai. Jesus het besef die tyd het gekom om terug te gaan na sy Vader toe. Dit was nie vir Hom maklik nie. Hy het baie geheg geraak aan sy getroue volgelinge hier op aarde. Hy was baie lief vir hulle.2 Daardie aand het Jesus saam met sy groepie getrouste volgelinge geëet. Die duiwel het toe al klaar vir Judas oortuig om Jesus in die rug te steek.3 Dit het Jesus nie bang gemaak nie. Hy het van God af gekom en moes nou teruggaan. Boonop het Hy alles onder beheer gehad. Daarvoor het God gesorg.
4 Jesus staan toe op en bind 'n handdoek om sy middel vas.5 Hy maak toe 'n bak vol water en begin sy volgelinge se voete een vir een was. Met die handdoek om sy lyf droog Hy hulle voete af.6 Hy kom toe by Simon Petrus. Voor Hy nog kon begin, val Petrus weg: "Here, wil U nou regtig my voete staan en was?"
7 "Petrus, dit mag nou vir jou snaaks lyk dat Ek so iets wil doen," sê Jesus, "maar gee 'n bietjie kans; al hierdie dinge sal wel later vir jou sin begin maak."
8 "Moet asseblief nie aan my voete raak nie," vra Petrus, "nie nou nie en ook nie later nie."
"Wel," antwoord Jesus hom, "as Ek nie jou voete was nie, beteken dit dat jy nie een van ons is nie. Dan gaan jy ook nie kry wat Ek vir jou kan gee nie."
9 "Here, as dit die geval is, moet dan asseblief nie by my voete stop nie. Was my hande; was my kop - sommer alles!"
10 Jesus sê toe: "Jy het mos vanoggend gebad. Dit is nou eers genoeg om net jou voete te was; dan is jy weer heeltemal skoon. Maar nie almal van julle sal skoon word nie, al was Ek almal se voete."11 Hierdie laaste sin was op Judas gemik. Jesus het mos geweet Judas gaan Hom verraai.
12 Jesus het voortgegaan en almal se voete gewas. Daarna gaan sit Hy weer op sy plek. "Maak dit sin wat Ek vir julle gedoen het? Wel, laat Ek dit so vir julle verduidelik. Hoe praat julle oor My?13 Julle noem My mos 'die Een wat alles vir ons leer' of 'ons Leier vir wie ons onvoorwaardelik volg'. Julle is natuurlik reg. Ek is al hierdie dinge.14 Nou maar goed. As Ek, die Een wat julle leer en lei, julle voete was, wat sê dit vir julle? Net een ding: julle behoort mekaar se voete net so te was.15 Ek het nou vir julle 'n goeie voorbeeld gegee: volg daardie voorbeeld. Doen aan mekaar wat Ek aan julle gedoen het.16 Dit kan nie anders nie, want die werker skryf mos nie vir die baas voor wat om te doen nie. As jy iemand stuur, vertel die een wat gestuur word nie vir jou wat jy wil hê nie. Dit werk mos andersom!17 Dit weet julle tog. As julle regtig gelukkig wil wees, moet julle doen wat Ek nou net vir julle gesê het.18 Ek praat nie van julle almal nie. Ek ken julle goed, want Ek het julle as my vriende gekies. In die Skrif staan: 'Die een wat saam met My geëet het, het my seer geskop.' Julle sal dit sien waar word.19 Ek sê dit nou al vir julle. Kyk maar net. Wanneer dit gebeur, sal julle nie onkant gevang word nie, want julle sal weet dat dit moet gebeur. Wanneer dit gebeur, sal julle net al hoe meer oortuig raak wie Ek regtig is.
20 "Dit moet julle altyd besef: sê nou Ek stuur iemand en mense ontvang hom met oop arms, is dit eintlik vir My wat hulle so ontvang. En as hulle My so met oop arms ontvang, ontvang hulle eintlik so vir God wat My gestuur het."
21  Jesus het nog ernstiger geword en was nou sigbaar ontsteld. "Ai, dit is vir My swaar om dit vir julle te sê, maar een van julle gaan My lelik in die rug steek."
22 "Wie sou dit nou wees?" het sy volgelinge so stilletjies onder mekaar gevra.23-24 Simon skraap toe moed bymekaar om te vra. Hy knik toe vir die dissipel wat langs Jesus gesit het. (Dit was die dissipel van wie Jesus baie gehou het.) "Vra 'n bietjie wie dit is."25 Die dissipel leun toe oor: "Here, wie is dit?"
26 Jesus sê toe: "Ek gaan 'n bietjie sous op hierdie brood sit en dit vir een van julle gee. Kyk mooi, dit is hy!" Jesus doen dit toe en gee die brood vir Judas, seun van Simon Iskariot.27 Hy het dit gevat en geëet. Van toe af het Satan 'n houvas op hom gekry. Jesus sê toe: "Moenie nog wag nie. Maak gou!"28 Die ander aan tafel het nie geweet wat Jesus bedoel nie. Hulle het gedink dit het maar iets met die geld te doen.29 (Judas het mos met die geld gewerk.) Judas moes seker nog iets vir die fees gaan koop of ietsie vir die armes gee, het hulle vir mekaar gesê.30 Judas het dadelik opgestaan en uitgestap. Buite was dit pikdonker.
31 Toe Judas by die deur uit is, sê Jesus: "Nou gaan die dinge begin gebeur. Julle sal sien hoe belangrik die Seun regtig is.32 Dan sal julle ook sien hoe groot en belangrik God is. Hierdie groot God gaan self vir julle wys hoe belangrik sy Seun is. En julle sal nie meer lank hoef te wag om dit te sien nie.33 My liewe vriende, my tydjie by julle raak nou min. Ek gaan weg en julle sal My soek, maar My nie kry nie. Julle sal nie kan kom waar Ek gaan nie. Ek het dit mos al vir die Jode gesê.34 Nou sê Ek dit vir julle ook.
"Julle moet mekaar liefhê. Dit verwag Ek van julle. Kyk hoe lief het Ek julle. Laat dit vir julle die voorbeeld wees van hoe lief julle mekaar moet hê.
35 "Hierdie liefde van julle moet as't ware hard en duidelik 'praat'. Mense moet daarna kyk en sê: 'Kyk net, daar's 'n volgeling van Jesus.'"
36  Iets het Simon Petrus nog gepla. "Here, waarheen gaan U?" vra hy.
"Petrus, jy kan nie nou al saam met My kom nie, maar wel later," troos Jesus hom.
37 Petrus was nie tevrede nie. "Here, hoekom kan ek nie nou al saamkom nie?" wou hy weet. "U weet U is vir my alles. Selfs al moet ek my lewe vir U gee, sal ek dit doen."
38 "Wat, Petrus? Sê jy jy is bereid om jou lewe vir My te gee? Ek het vir jou 'n verrassing. Voor die haan môreoggend vroeg kraai, sal jy al drie maal vurig ontken het dat jy iets van My weet, wat nog te sê dat jy my vriend is."

Washing the Disciples’ Feet

1 Just before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his timet had come to departt from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now loved them to the very end.ts2 The evening mealt was in progress, and the devil had already put into the hearts of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, that he should betrayt Jesus.t3 Because Jesust knew that the Father had handed all things over to him,t and that he had come from God and was going back to God,4 he got up from the meal, removedt his outer clothes,t took a towel and tied it around himself.t

5 He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself.t
6 Then he came to Simon Peter. Petert said to him, “Lord, are you going to washt my feet?”7 Jesus replied,t “You do not understandt what I am doing now, but you will understandt after these things.”8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!”t Jesus replied,t “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”t9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, washt not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!”10 Jesus replied,t “The one who has bathed needs only to wash his feet,t but is completelyt clean.s And you disciplest are clean, but not every one of you.”

11 (For Jesust knew the one who was going to betray him. For this reason he said, “Not every one of you ist clean.”)s
12 So when Jesust had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the tablet again and said to them, “Do you understandt what I have done for you?13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and do so correctly,t for that is what I am.t14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another’s feet.15 For I have given you an examples – you should do just as I have done for you.16 I tell you the solemn truth,t the slavet is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messengert greater than the one who sent him.

17 If you understandt these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

The Announcement of Jesus’ Betrayal

18 “What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture,t ‘The one who eats my breadthas turned against me.’ts19 I am telling you this now,t before it happens, so that when it happens you may believet that I am he.t

20 I tell you the solemn truth,t whoever acceptst the one I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”s
21 When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressedt in spirit, and testified,t “I tell you the solemn truth,t one of you will betray me.”t22 The disciples began to look at one another, worried and perplexedt to know which of them he was talking about.23 One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved,s was at the tablet to the right of Jesus in a place of honor.ts24 So Simon Peters gestured to this disciplet to ask Jesust who it was he was referring to.s25 Then the disciple whom Jesus lovedt leaned back against Jesus’ chest and asked him, “Lord, who is it?”26 Jesus replied,t “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of breads after I have dipped it in the dish.”t Then he dipped the piece of bread in the disht and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son.27 And after Judast took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him.ts Jesus said to him,t “What you are about to do, do quickly.”28 (Now none of those present at the tablet understoodt why Jesust said this to Judas.t29 Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast,t or to give something to the poor.)s

30 Judast took the piece of bread and went out immediately. (Now it was night.)s

The Prediction of Peter’s Denial

31 Whent Judast had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.32 If God is glorified in him,s God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away.t

33 Children, I am still with you for a little while. You will look for me,t and just as I said to the Jewish religious leaders,t ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’s now I tell you the same.t
34 “I give you a new commandment – to lovet one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.s

35 Everyonet will know by this that you are my disciples – if you have love for one another.”
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied,t “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.”37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”t

38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me?t I tell you the solemn truth,t the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!
