Johannes 13

1 Vor dem Feste des Passah aber, als Jesus wußte, daß seine Stunde gekommen war, daß er aus dieser Welt zu dem Vater hingehen sollte, da er die Seinigen, die in der Welt waren, geliebt hatte, liebte er sie bis ans Ende.2 Und während des Abendessens, als der Teufel schon dem Judas, Simons Sohn, dem Iskariot, es ins Herz gegeben hatte, daß er ihn überliefere,3 steht Jesus , wissend, daß der Vater ihm alles in die Hände gegeben, und daß er von Gott ausgegangen war und zu Gott hingehe,4 von dem Abendessen auf und legt die Oberkleider ab; und er nahm ein leinenes Tuch und umgürtete sich.5 Dann gießt er Wasser in das Waschbecken und fing an, die Füße der Jünger zu waschen und mit dem leinenen Tuch abzutrocknen, mit welchem er umgürtet war.6 Er kommt nun zu Simon Petrus, und der spricht zu ihm: Herr, du wäschest meine Füße?7 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Was ich tue, weißt du jetzt nicht, du wirst es aber hernach verstehen.8 Petrus spricht zu ihm: Du sollst nimmermehr meine Füße waschen! Jesus antwortete ihm: Wenn ich dich nicht wasche, so hast du kein Teil mit mir.9 Simon Petrus spricht zu ihm: Herr, nicht meine Füße allein, sondern auch die Hände und das Haupt.10 Jesus spricht zu ihm: Wer gebadet ist, hat nicht nötig sich zu waschen, ausgenommen die Füße, sondern ist ganz rein; und ihr seid rein, aber nicht alle.11 Denn er kannte den, der ihn überlieferte; darum sagte er: Ihr seid nicht alle rein.12 Als er nun ihre Füße gewaschen und seine Oberkleider genommen hatte, legte er sich wiederum zu Tische und sprach zu ihnen: Wisset ihr, was ich euch getan habe?13 Ihr heißet mich Lehrer und Herr, und ihr saget recht, denn ich bin es.14 Wenn nun ich, der Herr und der Lehrer, eure Füße gewaschen habe, so seid auch ihr schuldig, einander die Füße zu waschen.15 Denn ich habe euch ein Beispiel gegeben, auf daß, gleichwie ich euch getan habe, auch ihr tuet.16 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ein Knecht ist nicht größer als sein Herr, noch ein Gesandter größer, als der ihn gesandt hat.17 Wenn ihr dies wisset, glückselig seid ihr, wenn ihr es tut.18 Ich rede nicht von euch allen, ich weiß, welche ich auserwählt habe; aber auf daß die Schrift erfüllt würde: "Der mit mir das Brot ißt, hat seine Ferse wider mich aufgehoben".19 Von jetzt an sage ich es euch, ehe es geschieht, auf daß ihr, wenn es geschieht, glaubet, daß ich es bin.20 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer aufnimmt, wen irgend ich senden werde, nimmt mich auf; wer aber mich aufnimmt, nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat.21 Als Jesus dies gesagt hatte, ward er im Geiste erschüttert und bezeugte und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Einer von euch wird mich überliefern.22 Da blickten die Jünger einander an, zweifelnd, von wem er rede.23 Einer aber von seinen Jüngern, den Jesus liebte, lag zu Tische in dem Schoße Jesu.24 Diesem nun winkt Simon Petrus, damit er forschen möchte, wer es wohl wäre, von welchem er rede.25 Jener aber, sich an die Brust Jesu lehnend, spricht zu ihm: Herr, wer ist es?26 Jesus antwortete: Jener ist es, welchem ich den Bissen, wenn ich ihn eingetaucht habe, geben werde. Und als er den Bissen eingetaucht hatte, gibt er ihn dem Judas, Simons Sohn, dem Iskariot.27 Und nach dem Bissen fuhr alsdann der Satan in ihn. Jesus spricht nun zu ihm: Was du tust, tue schnell.28 Keiner aber von den zu Tische Liegenden verstand, wozu er ihm dies sagte.29 Denn etliche meinten, weil Judas die Kasse hatte, daß Jesus zu ihm sage: Kaufe, was wir für das Fest bedürfen, oder daß er den Armen etwas geben solle.30 Als nun jener den Bissen genommen hatte, ging er alsbald hinaus. Es war aber Nacht.31 Als er nun hinausgegangen war, spricht Jesus: Jetzt ist der Sohn des Menschen verherrlicht, und Gott ist verherrlicht in ihm.32 Wenn Gott verherrlicht ist in ihm, so wird auch Gott ihn verherrlichen in sich selbst, und alsbald wird er ihn verherrlichen.33 Kinder, noch eine kleine Weile bin ich bei euch; ihr werdet mich suchen, und wie ich den Juden sagte: Wo ich hingehe, könnt ihr nicht hinkommen, so sage ich jetzt auch euch.34 Ein neues Gebot gebe ich euch, daß ihr einander liebet, auf daß, gleichwie ich euch geliebt habe, auch ihr einander liebet.35 Daran werden alle erkennen, daß ihr meine Jünger seid, wenn ihr Liebe untereinander habt.36 Simon Petrus spricht zu ihm: Herr, wo gehst du hin? Jesus antwortete ihm: Wo ich hingehe, kannst du mir jetzt nicht folgen; du wirst mir aber später folgen.37 Petrus spricht zu ihm: Herr, warum kann ich dir jetzt nicht folgen? Mein Leben will ich für dich lassen.38 Jesus antwortet: Dein Leben willst du für mich lassen? Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir, der Hahn wird nicht krähen, bis du mich dreimal verleugnet hast.

Washing the Disciples’ Feet

1 Just before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his timet had come to departt from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now loved them to the very end.ts2 The evening mealt was in progress, and the devil had already put into the hearts of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, that he should betrayt Jesus.t3 Because Jesust knew that the Father had handed all things over to him,t and that he had come from God and was going back to God,4 he got up from the meal, removedt his outer clothes,t took a towel and tied it around himself.t

5 He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself.t
6 Then he came to Simon Peter. Petert said to him, “Lord, are you going to washt my feet?”7 Jesus replied,t “You do not understandt what I am doing now, but you will understandt after these things.”8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!”t Jesus replied,t “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”t9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, washt not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!”10 Jesus replied,t “The one who has bathed needs only to wash his feet,t but is completelyt clean.s And you disciplest are clean, but not every one of you.”

11 (For Jesust knew the one who was going to betray him. For this reason he said, “Not every one of you ist clean.”)s
12 So when Jesust had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the tablet again and said to them, “Do you understandt what I have done for you?13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and do so correctly,t for that is what I am.t14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another’s feet.15 For I have given you an examples – you should do just as I have done for you.16 I tell you the solemn truth,t the slavet is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messengert greater than the one who sent him.

17 If you understandt these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

The Announcement of Jesus’ Betrayal

18 “What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture,t ‘The one who eats my breadthas turned against me.’ts19 I am telling you this now,t before it happens, so that when it happens you may believet that I am he.t

20 I tell you the solemn truth,t whoever acceptst the one I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”s
21 When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressedt in spirit, and testified,t “I tell you the solemn truth,t one of you will betray me.”t22 The disciples began to look at one another, worried and perplexedt to know which of them he was talking about.23 One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved,s was at the tablet to the right of Jesus in a place of honor.ts24 So Simon Peters gestured to this disciplet to ask Jesust who it was he was referring to.s25 Then the disciple whom Jesus lovedt leaned back against Jesus’ chest and asked him, “Lord, who is it?”26 Jesus replied,t “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of breads after I have dipped it in the dish.”t Then he dipped the piece of bread in the disht and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son.27 And after Judast took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him.ts Jesus said to him,t “What you are about to do, do quickly.”28 (Now none of those present at the tablet understoodt why Jesust said this to Judas.t29 Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast,t or to give something to the poor.)s

30 Judast took the piece of bread and went out immediately. (Now it was night.)s

The Prediction of Peter’s Denial

31 Whent Judast had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.32 If God is glorified in him,s God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away.t

33 Children, I am still with you for a little while. You will look for me,t and just as I said to the Jewish religious leaders,t ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’s now I tell you the same.t
34 “I give you a new commandment – to lovet one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.s

35 Everyonet will know by this that you are my disciples – if you have love for one another.”
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied,t “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.”37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”t

38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me?t I tell you the solemn truth,t the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!
