Isus spală picioarele ucenicilor

1 Înainte de Sărbătoarea Paștelui, Isus, știind că I-a venit ceasul să plece din lumea aceasta la Tatăl, pentru că îi iubea pe ai Săi care erau în lume, i-a iubit până la capătt.2 În timpul cinei, diavolul pusese deja în inima lui Iuda, fiul lui Simon Iscarioteanul, gândul să-L trădeze.3 Isus, știind că Tatăl I-a dat toate lucrurile în mâini, că de la Dumnezeu a ieșit și la Dumnezeu Se duce,4 S-a ridicat de la masă, Și-a pus deoparte hainele, a luat un ștergar și S-a încins cu el.5 Apoi a turnat apă într-un lighean și a început să spele picioarele ucenicilor și să le șteargă cu ștergarul cu care era încins.

6 Când a ajuns la Simon Petru, acesta I-a zis:
– Doamne, Tu să-mi speli picioarele?!

7 Isus i-a răspuns:
– Tu nu pricepi acum ce fac Eu, dar vei înțelege după aceea.

8 Petru I-a zis:
– Niciodată nu-mi vei spăla picioarele!
Isus i-a răspuns:
– Dacă nu te spăl, nu vei avea parte cu Mine!

9 Simon Petru I-a zis:
– Doamne, nu doar picioarele, ci și mâinile și capul!

10 Isus i-a zis:
– Cel ce s-a îmbăiat nu are nevoie să se spele decât pe picioare, apoi este curat în întregime. Și voi sunteți curați, dar nu toți.

11 Căci El îl știa pe cel ce urma să-L trădeze; de aceea a spus: „Nu toți sunteți curați.“

12 După ce le-a spălat picioarele, Și-a luat haina și S-a așezat să mănânce din nou. El le-a zis: „Înțelegeți ce v-am făcut?13 Voi Mă numiți «Învățătorul» și «Domnul» și bine ziceți, pentru că sunt.14 Deci dacă Eu – Domnul și Învățătorul – v-am spălat picioarele, atunci și voi sunteți datori să vă spălați picioarele unii altora.15 Căci Eu v-am dat un exemplu, ca să faceți și voi așa cum v-am făcut Eu vouă.16 Adevărat, adevărat vă spun că nici un sclav nu este mai mare decât stăpânul lui și nici un apostolt nu este mai mare decât cel ce l-a trimis.17 Dacă știți aceste lucruri, sunteți fericiți dacă le faceți.

Descoperirea trădătorului

18 Nu vorbesc despre voi toți; Eu îi cunosc pe cei pe care i-am ales. Dar trebuie să se împlinească Scriptura care zice :
«Cel ce mănâncă pâinea Mea
și-a ridicat călcâiul împotriva Mea!»t

19 Vă spun lucrul acesta de acum, înainte să se întâmple, pentru ca atunci când se va întâmpla, să credeți că Eu sunt.20 Adevărat, adevărat vă spun că cine-l primește pe cel pe care-l trimit Eu, pe Mine Mă primește, iar cel ce Mă primește pe Mine Îl primește pe Cel Ce M-a trimis pe Mine.“

21 După ce a spus aceste lucruri, Isus a fost tulburat în duhul Său și a mărturisit zicând:
– Adevărat, adevărat vă spun că unul dintre voi Mă va trăda.

22 Ucenicii se uitau unii la alții, fiind nedumeriți despre cine vorbește.23 Unul dintre ucenicii Lui, cel pe care-l iubea Isust, stătea la masă sprijinit de pieptul lui Isust.24 Simon Petru i-a făcut semn să-L întrebe pe Isus cine este cel despre care vorbește.

25 Ca urmare, în timp ce stătea la masă sprijinit de pieptul lui Isust, el L-a întrebat:
– Doamne, cine este?

26 Isus i-a răspuns:
– Este acela căruia îi voi înmuia bucățica de pâine și i-o voi da.
A înmuiat o bucățică de pâine și i-a dat-o lui Iuda, fiul lui Simon Iscarioteanul.27 De îndată ce a primit bucățica de pâine, Satant a intrat în el. Atunci Isus i-a zis: „Ce ai să faci, fă repede!“28 Dar nici unul dintre cei ce mâncau la masă n-a înțeles de ce îi spusese aceasta.29 Unii credeau că, de vreme ce Iuda ținea punga, Isus îi spusese: „Cumpără ceea ce avem nevoie pentru sărbătoare!“ sau îi spusese să dea ceva celor săraci.30 După ce a luat bucățica de pâine, Iuda a ieșit afară imediat. Era noapte.

Isus prezice lepădarea lui Petru

31 După ce acesta a ieșit afară, Isus a zis:
– Acum Fiul Omului este proslăvit și Dumnezeu este proslăvit în El.32 Dacă Dumnezeu este proslăvit în El,t atunci și Dumnezeu Îl va proslăvi în Sine Însuși și-L va proslăvi îndată.33 Copilași, mai sunt puțin cu voi. Mă veți căuta și, așa cum le-am spus iudeilor că „Unde Mă duc Eu, voi nu puteți veni“, tot așa vă spun și vouă acum.34 Vă dau o poruncă nouă: să vă iubiți unii pe alții! Așa cum v-am iubit Eu, tot așa să vă iubiți și voi unii pe alții.35 Prin aceasta vor cunoaște toți că sunteți ucenicii Mei, dacă veți avea dragoste unii pentru alții.

36 Simon Petru L-a întrebat:
– Doamne, unde Te duci?
Isus i-a răspuns:
– Acum tu nu poți să Mă urmezi acolo unde Mă duc Eu, dar mai târziu Mă vei urma.

37 Petru I-a zis:
– Doamne, de ce nu pot să Te urmez acum? Îmi voi da viața pentru Tine!

38 Isus i-a răspuns:
– Îți vei da viața pentru Mine? Adevărat, adevărat îți spun că nu va cânta cocoșult până când nu te vei lepăda de Mine de trei ori!

Jesus Washes the Feet //of His Disciples

1 It was before Passover, and Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and to return to the Father. He had always loved his followers in this world, and he loved them to the very end.

2 Even before the evening meal started, the devil had made Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, t decide to betray Jesus.
3 Jesus knew he had come from God and would go back to God. He also knew that the Father had given him complete power. 4 So during the meal Jesus got up, removed his outer garment, and wrapped a towel around his waist.

5 He put some water into a large bowl. Then he began washing his disciples' feet and drying them with the towel he was wearing.

6 But when he came to Simon Peter, this disciple asked, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

7 Jesus answered, “You don't really know what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

8 “You will never wash my feet!” Peter replied.
“If I don't wash you,” Jesus told him, “you don't really belong to me.”

9 Peter said, “Lord, don't wash just my feet. Wash my hands and my head.”
10 Jesus answered, “People who have bathed and are clean all over need to wash just their feet. And you, my disciples, are clean, except for one of you.”

11 Jesus knew who would betray him. That is why he said, “except for one of you.”

12  t After Jesus had washed his disciples' feet and had put his outer garment back on, he sat down again.t Then he said:
Do you understand what I have done? 13 You call me your teacher and Lord, and you should, because that is who I am. 14 And if your Lord and teacher has washed your feet, you should do the same for each other. 15 I have set the example, and you should do for each other exactly what I have done for you. 16 t I tell you for certain that servants are not greater than their master, and messengers are not greater than the one who sent them.

17 You know these things, and God will bless you, if you do them.
18  t I am not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But what the Scriptures say must come true. And they say, “The man who ate with me has turned against me!” 19 I am telling you this before it all happens. Then when it does happen, you will believe who I am.t

20 t I tell you for certain that anyone who welcomes my messengers also welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.

Jesus Tells //What Will Happen to Him

(Matthew 26.20-25; Mark 14.17-21; Luke 22.21-23)

22 They were confused about what he meant. And they just stared at each other.
23 Jesus' favorite disciple was sitting next to him at the meal, 24 and Simon motioned for this disciple to find out which one Jesus meant.

25 So the disciple leaned toward Jesus and asked, “Lord, which one of us are you talking about?”

26 Jesus answered, “I will dip this piece of bread in the sauce and give it to the one I was talking about.”
Then Jesus dipped the bread and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.t

27 Right then Satan took control of Judas.
Jesus said, “Judas, go quickly and do what you have to do.” 28 No one at the meal understood what Jesus meant. 29 But because Judas was in charge of the money, some of them thought that Jesus had told him to buy something they needed for the festival. Others thought that Jesus had told him to give some money to the poor.

30 Judas took the piece of bread and went out.
It was already night.

The New Command

31 After Judas had gone, Jesus said:
Now the Son of Man will be given glory, and he will bring glory to God.

32 Then, after God is given glory because of him, God will bring glory to him, and God will do it very soon.
33  t My children, I will be with you for only a little while longer. Then you will look for me, but you won't find me. I tell you just as I told the people, “You cannot go where I am going.” 34 t But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you.

35 If you love each other, everyone will know that you are my disciples.

Peter's Promise

(Matthew 26.31-35; Mark 14.27-31; Luke 22.31-34)

36 Simon Peter asked, “Lord, where are you going?”
Jesus answered, “You can't go with me now, but later on you will.”

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can't I go with you now? I would die for you!”
38 “Would you really die for me?” Jesus asked. “I tell you for certain before a rooster crows, you will say three times that you don't even know me.”
