Jesus tvättar lärjungarnas fötter
1 Det var strax före påskhögtiden och Jesus visste att hans stund hade kommit, då han skulle lämna världen och gå till Fadern. Han hade älskat sina egna som levde här i världen, och han älskade dem intill slutet.
2 De hade samlats till måltid, och djävulen hade redan ingett Judas, Simon Iskariots son, att förråda Jesus. 3 Jesus visste att Fadern hade lagt allt i hans händer och att han hade utgått från Gud och nu återvände till Gud. 4 Han steg upp från bordet, tog av sig manteln och band en handduk om livet. 5 Sedan hällde han vatten i tvättfatet och började tvätta lärjungarnas fötter och torka dem med handduken som han hade bundit om sig. 6 När han kom till Simon Petrus sade denne till honom: ”Herre, skall du tvätta mina fötter!” 7 Jesus svarade: ”Vad jag gör förstår du inte nu, men senare skall du fatta det.” 8 Petrus sade: ”Aldrig någonsin får du tvätta mina fötter!” Jesus sade till honom: ”Om jag inte tvättar dig har du ingen gemenskap med mig.” 9 Då sade Simon Petrus: ”Herre, tvätta inte bara mina fötter utan också händerna och huvudet.” 10 Men Jesus sade till honom: ”Den som har badat behöver bara få fötterna tvättade, i övrigt är han ren. Och ni är rena, dock inte alla.”
11 Han visste nämligen vem som skulle förråda honom, och därför sade han att de inte alla var rena.
12 När han hade tvättat deras fötter och tagit på sig manteln och lagt sig till bords igen sade han till dem: ”Förstår ni vad det är jag har gjort med er? 13 Ni kallar mig mästare och herre, och det med rätta, för det är jag. 14 Om nu jag, som är er herre och mästare, har tvättat era fötter, är också ni skyldiga att tvätta varandras fötter. 15 Jag har gett er ett exempel, för att ni skall göra som jag har gjort med er. 16 Sannerligen, jag säger er: en tjänare är inte förmer än sin herre, och en budbärare inte förmer än den som har sänt honom.
17 Vet ni detta är ni saliga om ni också handlar så.Jesus utpekar förrädaren
18 Jag talar inte om er alla. Jag vet vilka jag har utvalt, men skriftens ord måste uppfyllas: Den som äter mitt bröd har lyft sin häl mot mig. 19 Jag säger det redan nu, innan det sker, för att ni, när det har skett, skall tro att jag är den jag är.
20 Sannerligen, jag säger er: den som tar emot någon som jag sänder, han tar emot mig, och den som tar emot mig, han tar emot den som har sänt mig.”
21 När Jesus hade sagt detta skakades han i sitt innersta och vittnade: ”Sannerligen, jag säger er: en av er kommer att förråda mig.” 22 Hans lärjungar såg på varandra och undrade vem han menade. 23 En av dem, den som Jesus älskade, låg intill honom. 24 Simon Petrus gjorde tecken åt honom att fråga Jesus vem han talade om. 25 Lärjungen lutade sig bakåt mot Jesu bröst och sade: ”Herre, vem är det?” 26 Jesus svarade: ”Han som får brödet som jag nu doppar.” Och han doppade brödet och gav det åt Judas, Simon Iskariots son. 27 När Judas hade fått brödet for Satan in i honom. Jesus sade: ”Gör genast vad du skall göra!” 28 Ingen av dem som var med vid bordet visste varför han sade detta till honom. 29 Eftersom Judas hade hand om kassan trodde några att Jesus hade sagt åt honom att köpa vad som behövdes till högtiden eller att ge något till de fattiga.
30 Men Judas tog brödet och gick genast ut. Det var natt.Ett nytt bud
31 När Judas hade gått sade Jesus: ”Nu har Människosonen förhärligats, och Gud har förhärligats i honom. 32 Är nu Gud förhärligad i honom skall Gud också förhärliga honom i sig, och han skall snart förhärliga honom. 33 Ännu en kort tid är jag hos er, mina barn. Ni kommer att söka efter mig, och jag säger nu till er vad jag sade till judarna: Dit jag går kan ni inte komma. 34 Ett nytt bud ger jag er: att ni skall älska varandra. Så som jag har älskat er skall också ni älska varandra.
35 Alla skall förstå att ni är mina lärjungar om ni visar varandra kärlek.”Jesus förutsäger Petrus förnekelse
36 Simon Petrus frågade: ”Vart går du, herre?” Jesus svarade: ”Dit jag går kan du inte följa mig nu, men längre fram skall du följa mig.” 37 Petrus sade: ”Herre, varför kan jag inte följa dig nu? Jag skall ge mitt liv för dig.” 38 Då sade Jesus: ”Du skall ge ditt liv för mig? Sannerligen, jag säger dig: tuppen skall inte gala förrän du tre gånger har förnekat mig.”

Jesus Washes the Feet //of His Disciples
1 It was before Passover, and Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and to return to the Father. He had always loved his followers in this world, and he loved them to the very end.
2 Even before the evening meal started, the devil had made Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, t decide to betray Jesus.
3 Jesus knew he had come from God and would go back to God. He also knew that the Father had given him complete power. 4 So during the meal Jesus got up, removed his outer garment, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
5 He put some water into a large bowl. Then he began washing his disciples' feet and drying them with the towel he was wearing.
6 But when he came to Simon Peter, this disciple asked, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus answered, “You don't really know what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8 “You will never wash my feet!” Peter replied.
“If I don't wash you,” Jesus told him, “you don't really belong to me.”
9 Peter said, “Lord, don't wash just my feet. Wash my hands and my head.”
10 Jesus answered, “People who have bathed and are clean all over need to wash just their feet. And you, my disciples, are clean, except for one of you.”
11 Jesus knew who would betray him. That is why he said, “except for one of you.”
12 t After Jesus had washed his disciples' feet and had put his outer garment back on, he sat down again.t Then he said:
Do you understand what I have done? 13 You call me your teacher and Lord, and you should, because that is who I am. 14 And if your Lord and teacher has washed your feet, you should do the same for each other. 15 I have set the example, and you should do for each other exactly what I have done for you. 16 t I tell you for certain that servants are not greater than their master, and messengers are not greater than the one who sent them.
17 You know these things, and God will bless you, if you do them.
18 t I am not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But what the Scriptures say must come true. And they say, “The man who ate with me has turned against me!” 19 I am telling you this before it all happens. Then when it does happen, you will believe who I am.t
20 t I tell you for certain that anyone who welcomes my messengers also welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.Jesus Tells //What Will Happen to Him

21 After Jesus had said these things, he was deeply troubled and told his disciples, “I tell you for certain that one of you will betray me.”
22 They were confused about what he meant. And they just stared at each other.
23 Jesus' favorite disciple was sitting next to him at the meal, 24 and Simon motioned for this disciple to find out which one Jesus meant.
25 So the disciple leaned toward Jesus and asked, “Lord, which one of us are you talking about?”
26 Jesus answered, “I will dip this piece of bread in the sauce and give it to the one I was talking about.”
Then Jesus dipped the bread and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.t
27 Right then Satan took control of Judas.
Jesus said, “Judas, go quickly and do what you have to do.” 28 No one at the meal understood what Jesus meant. 29 But because Judas was in charge of the money, some of them thought that Jesus had told him to buy something they needed for the festival. Others thought that Jesus had told him to give some money to the poor.
30 Judas took the piece of bread and went out.
It was already night.The New Command
31 After Judas had gone, Jesus said:
Now the Son of Man will be given glory, and he will bring glory to God.
32 Then, after God is given glory because of him, God will bring glory to him, and God will do it very soon.
33 t My children, I will be with you for only a little while longer. Then you will look for me, but you won't find me. I tell you just as I told the people, “You cannot go where I am going.” 34 t But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you.
35 If you love each other, everyone will know that you are my disciples.Peter's Promise

36 Simon Peter asked, “Lord, where are you going?”
Jesus answered, “You can't go with me now, but later on you will.”
37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can't I go with you now? I would die for you!”
38 “Would you really die for me?” Jesus asked. “I tell you for certain before a rooster crows, you will say three times that you don't even know me.”
