II.— LIBRO DE LA PASIÓN Y DE LA GLORIA (13—20)
Jesús lava los pies a sus discípulos
1 Antes de la fiesta de la Pascua, sabiendo Jesús que le había llegado la hora de dejar este mundot para ir al Padre y habiendo amado a los suyos que estaban en el mundo, llevó su amor hasta el fin.t 2 Se habían puesto a cenart y el diablo había metido ya en la cabeza de Judas Iscariote, hijo de Simón, la idea de traicionar a Jesús.t 3 Con plena conciencia de haber venido de Dios y de que ahora volvía a él, y perfecto conocedor de la plena autoridad que el Padre le había dado,t 4 Jesús interrumpió la cena, se quitó el manto, tomó una toalla y se la ciñó a la cintura. 5 Después echó agua en una palangana y se puso a lavar los piest de los discípulos y a secárselos con la toalla que llevaba a la cintura.
6 Cuando le llegó la vez a Simón Pedro, este le dijo:
— Señor, ¿vas a lavarme los pies tú a mí?
7 Jesús le contestó:
— Lo que estoy haciendo, no puedes comprenderlo ahora; llegará el tiempo en que lo entiendas.
8 Pedro insistió:
— Jamás permitiré que me laves los pies.
Jesús le respondió:
— Si no me dejas que te lave, no podrás seguir contándote entre los míost.
9 Le dijo entonces Simón Pedro:
— Señor, no sólo los pies; lávame también las manos y la cabeza.
10 Pero Jesús le replicó:
— El que se ha bañado y está completamente limpio, sólo necesita lavarse los pies*. Y ustedes están limpiost, aunque no todos.
11 Jesús sabía muy bien quién iba a traicionarlo; por eso añadió: “No todos están limpios.”t
12 Una vez que terminó de lavarles los pies, se puso de nuevo el manto, volvió a sentarse a la mesa y les preguntó:
— ¿Comprenden lo que acabo de hacer con ustedes? 13 Ustedes me llaman Maestro y Señor, y tienen razón, porque efectivamente lo soy.t 14 Pues bien, si yo, el Maestro y Señor, les he lavado los pies, lo mismo deben hacer ustedes unos con otros.t 15 Les he dado ejemplo para que se porten como yo me he portado con ustedes.t 16 Les aseguro que el siervo no puede ser mayor que su amo; ni el enviado, superior a quien lo envió.t 17 Si comprenden estas cosas y las ponen en práctica serán dichosos.t 18 No me refiero ahora a todos ustedes; yo sé muy bien a quiénes he elegido. Pero debe cumplirse la Escritura: El que comparte el pan conmigo* se ha vuelto contra mít.t 19 Les digo estas cosas ahora, antes que sucedan, para que, cuando sucedan, crean que “yo soyt”.t
20 Les aseguro que todo el que reciba al que yo envíe, me recibe a mí mismo, y al recibirme a mí, recibe al que me envió.tJesús predice la traición de Judas

21 Después de decir esto, Jesús se sintió profundamente conmovido y declaró
— Les aseguro que uno de ustedes va a traicionarme.t
22 Los discípulos se miraban unos a otros preguntándose a quién se referiría. 23 Uno de ellos, el discípulo a quien Jesús tanto quería, estaba recostadot al lado de Jesús. 24 Simón Pedro le hizo señas para que le preguntara a quién se refería.
25 El discípulo, inclinándose hacia Jesús, le preguntó:
— Señor, ¿quién es?
26 Jesús le contestó:
— Aquel para quien yo moje un bocado de pan y se lo dé, ese es.
Lo mojó y se lo dio a Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote.
27 Y, tras el bocado, entró en él Satanás. Jesús le dijo:
— Lo que vas a hacer, hazlo cuanto antes.t
28 Ninguno de los comensales entendió por qué Jesús le dijo esto. 29 Como Judas era el depositario de la bolsa, algunos pensaron que le encargaba comprar lo necesario para la fiesta o que diera algo a los pobres.t
30 Judas tomó el bocado de pan y salió inmediatamente. Era de noche.tEl mandamiento nuevo
31 Apenas salió Judas, dijo Jesús:
— Ahora va a manifestarse la gloria del Hijo del hombre, y Dios va a ser glorificado en él.t 32 Y si Dios va a ser glorificado en élt, Dios, a su vez, glorificará al Hijo del hombre. Y va a hacerlo muy pronto. 33 Hijos míos, ya no estaré con ustedes por mucho tiempo. Me buscarán, pero les digo lo mismo que ya dije a los judíos: a donde yo voy ustedes no pueden venir.t 34 Les doy un mandamiento nuevo: Ámense unos a otros; como yo los he amado, así también ámense los unos a los otros.t
35 El amor mutuo entre ustedes será el distintivo por el que todo el mundo los reconocerá como discípulos míos.Jesús predice la negación de Pedro
36 Simón Pedro le preguntó:
— Señor, ¿a dónde vas?
Jesús le contestó:
— A donde yo voy, tú no puedes seguirme ahora; algún día lo harás.t
37 Pedro insistió:
— Señor, ¿por qué no puedo seguirte ahora? Estoy dispuesto a dar mi vidat por ti.
38 Jesús le dijo:
— ¿De modo que estás dispuesto a dar tu vida por mí? Te aseguro que antes que el gallo cante, me habrás negado tres veces.

Washing the Disciples’ Feet
1 Just before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his timet had come to departt from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now loved them to the very end.ts2 The evening mealt was in progress, and the devil had already put into the hearts of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, that he should betrayt Jesus.t3 Because Jesust knew that the Father had handed all things over to him,t and that he had come from God and was going back to God,4 he got up from the meal, removedt his outer clothes,t took a towel and tied it around himself.t
5 He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself.t
6 Then he came to Simon Peter. Petert said to him, “Lord, are you going to washt my feet?”7 Jesus replied,t “You do not understandt what I am doing now, but you will understandt after these things.”8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!”t Jesus replied,t “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”t9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, washt not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!”10 Jesus replied,t “The one who has bathed needs only to wash his feet,t but is completelyt clean.s And you disciplest are clean, but not every one of you.”
11 (For Jesust knew the one who was going to betray him. For this reason he said, “Not every one of you ist clean.”)s
12 So when Jesust had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the tablet again and said to them, “Do you understandt what I have done for you?13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and do so correctly,t for that is what I am.t14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another’s feet.15 For I have given you an examples – you should do just as I have done for you.16 I tell you the solemn truth,t the slavet is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messengert greater than the one who sent him.
17 If you understandt these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
The Announcement of Jesus’ Betrayal
18 “What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture,t ‘The one who eats my breadthas turned against me.’ts19 I am telling you this now,t before it happens, so that when it happens you may believet that I am he.t
20 I tell you the solemn truth,t whoever acceptst the one I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”s
21 When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressedt in spirit, and testified,t “I tell you the solemn truth,t one of you will betray me.”t22 The disciples began to look at one another, worried and perplexedt to know which of them he was talking about.23 One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved,s was at the tablet to the right of Jesus in a place of honor.ts24 So Simon Peters gestured to this disciplet to ask Jesust who it was he was referring to.s25 Then the disciple whom Jesus lovedt leaned back against Jesus’ chest and asked him, “Lord, who is it?”26 Jesus replied,t “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of breads after I have dipped it in the dish.”t Then he dipped the piece of bread in the disht and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son.27 And after Judast took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him.ts Jesus said to him,t “What you are about to do, do quickly.”28 (Now none of those present at the tablet understoodt why Jesust said this to Judas.t29 Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast,t or to give something to the poor.)s
30 Judast took the piece of bread and went out immediately. (Now it was night.)s
The Prediction of Peter’s Denial
31 Whent Judast had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.32 If God is glorified in him,s God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away.t
33 Children, I am still with you for a little while. You will look for me,t and just as I said to the Jewish religious leaders,t ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’s now I tell you the same.t
34 “I give you a new commandment – to lovet one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.s
35 Everyonet will know by this that you are my disciples – if you have love for one another.”
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied,t “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.”37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”t
38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me?t I tell you the solemn truth,t the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!
