Jesus tvättar sina efterföljares fötter

1 Påskhögtident skulle snart börja, och Jesus visste att den tid nu kommit som hans Far i himlen bestämt, då Jesus skulle lämna jorden och återvända till sin Far. Jesus gav därför sina efterföljare ett sista bevis på hur mycket han älskade dem.2 Jesus och hans efterföljare hade samlats för att äta tillsammans, och djävulen hade redan intalat Judas, Simon Iskariots son, att förråda Jesus.3 Jesus visste att Fadern hade gett honom makt över allting och att han hade kommit från Gud och skulle återvända till Gud.4 Så han reste sig nu från bordet, tog av sig manteln och virade en handduk om sig.

5 Sedan hällde han vatten i ett handfat och började tvätta sina efterföljares fötter och torka dem med handduken som han hade virat om sig.

6 Men när han kom till Simon Petrus, sa Simon till honom: "Herre, inte ska du tvätta mina fötter."

7 Då svarade Jesus: "Du förstår inte just nu vad jag gör, men en dag ska du förstå det."
8 "Nej", protesterade Petrus, "aldrig i livet att du får tvätta mina fötter!"
Men Jesus sa till honom: "Om jag inte tvättar dig ren, så kan du inte tillhöra mig."

9 Då ropade Petrus: "Herre, tvätta mina händer och mitt huvud också då, och inte bara fötterna."
10 Men Jesus sa till honom: "Den som har badat behöver bara få sina fötter tvättade för att vara helt och hållet ren. Och ni är rena, men det gäller inte alla."

11 Jesus visste nämligen vem som skulle förråda honom. Det var därför han sa att inte alla var rena.
12 När Jesus hade tvättat deras fötter, tog han på sig manteln igen och slog sig ner vid bordet. Sedan frågade han dem: "Förstår ni vad jag har gjort med er?13 Ni kallar mig Mästare och Herre, och det är rätt att ni gör det, för det är vad jag är.14 Men om nu jag, som är er Herre och Mästare, har tvättat era fötter, då är också ni skyldiga att tvätta varandras fötter.15 Jag har gett er ett exempel att följa: gör som jag har gjort mot er.16 Jag försäkrar er, att en tjänare inte står över sin herre, och att en budbärare inte står över den som har sänt honom.

17 När ni nu vet detta, är ni lyckliga om ni också praktiserar det."

Jesus förutsäger att han ska bli förrådd

18 Jesus fortsatte: "Jag talar inte om er alla. Jag känner er som jag har valt ut till mina närmaste efterföljare, men det som Gud förutsagt i Skriftent måste bli verklighet: 'Den som åt tillsammans med mig har vänt sig mot mig.'t19 Jag säger det redan nu, så att ni när det har hänt, ska tro att jag är den jag ärt.

20 Jag försäkrar er, att den som tar emot någon som jag sänder, han tar emot mig. Och den som tar emot mig, han tar emot Gud, eftersom Gud har sänt mig."

21 När Jesus hade sagt detta blev han upprörd i sitt innersta och utbrast: "Jag ska säga er som det är: en av er kommer att förråda mig!t"
22 Hans efterföljare såg då på varandra och undrade vem han kunde mena.23 En av hans efterföljare, den som han älskade,t var närmast Jesus vid bordet och24 Simon Petrus gjorde därför tecken åt honom att fråga Jesus vem han talade om.

25 Efterföljaren lutade sig då mot Jesus och frågade: "Herre, vem är det?"
26 Jesus svarade: "Det är han som får brödstycket som jag nu doppar i fatet." Sedan doppade han brödstycket och gav det till Judas, Simon Iskariots son.

27 Och i samma ögonblick som Judas fick brödet for Satan in i honom. Jesus sa då till honom: "Skynda dig, gör det du ska!"
28 Ingen av de andra vid bordet förstod varför Jesus sa så till Judas.29 Några trodde att han bad honom gå ut och köpa det man behövde till påskhögtiden eller ge något till de fattiga, eftersom Judas skötte om den gemensamma kassan.

30 Men när Judas hade fått brödet, reste han sig genast och gick ut. Och det var natt.

Jesus förutsäger att Petrus ska svika honom

31 Så snart Judas hade gått, sa Jesus: "Jag, Människosonent, ska nu återvända till min härlighet i himlen, och Gud ska bli upphöjd och ärad genom det som händer mig.32 Ja, Gud ska mycket snart låta mig återvända till min härlighet.t33 Mina kära barn, jag ska bara vara kvar hos er en kort tid till. Sedan ska ni förgäves söka efter mig, eftersom jag går till ett ställe dit ni inte kan komma, precis som jag sa till de judiska ledarna.34 Så nu befaller jag er något nytt: att ni ska älska varandra. Ja, älska varandra lika mycket som jag har älskat er.

35 Genom att ni älskar varandra ska människorna förstå att ni är mina efterföljare."
36 Simon Petrus frågade då Jesus: "Herre, vart går du?"
Jesus svarade: "Dit jag går nu, kan du inte följa med, men senare ska du följa mig."

37 Men Petrus undrade: "Varför kan jag inte följa med nu? Jag är beredd att dö för dig."

38 Då svarade Jesus: "Dö för mig, säger du? Jag försäkrar dig, att innan tuppen hinner gala imorgon bitti, ska du tre gånger ha förnekat att du känner mig!"

Washing the Disciples’ Feet

1 Just before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his timet had come to departt from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now loved them to the very end.ts2 The evening mealt was in progress, and the devil had already put into the hearts of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, that he should betrayt Jesus.t3 Because Jesust knew that the Father had handed all things over to him,t and that he had come from God and was going back to God,4 he got up from the meal, removedt his outer clothes,t took a towel and tied it around himself.t

5 He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself.t
6 Then he came to Simon Peter. Petert said to him, “Lord, are you going to washt my feet?”7 Jesus replied,t “You do not understandt what I am doing now, but you will understandt after these things.”8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!”t Jesus replied,t “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”t9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, washt not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!”10 Jesus replied,t “The one who has bathed needs only to wash his feet,t but is completelyt clean.s And you disciplest are clean, but not every one of you.”

11 (For Jesust knew the one who was going to betray him. For this reason he said, “Not every one of you ist clean.”)s
12 So when Jesust had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the tablet again and said to them, “Do you understandt what I have done for you?13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and do so correctly,t for that is what I am.t14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another’s feet.15 For I have given you an examples – you should do just as I have done for you.16 I tell you the solemn truth,t the slavet is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messengert greater than the one who sent him.

17 If you understandt these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

The Announcement of Jesus’ Betrayal

18 “What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture,t ‘The one who eats my breadthas turned against me.’ts19 I am telling you this now,t before it happens, so that when it happens you may believet that I am he.t

20 I tell you the solemn truth,t whoever acceptst the one I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”s
21 When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressedt in spirit, and testified,t “I tell you the solemn truth,t one of you will betray me.”t22 The disciples began to look at one another, worried and perplexedt to know which of them he was talking about.23 One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved,s was at the tablet to the right of Jesus in a place of honor.ts24 So Simon Peters gestured to this disciplet to ask Jesust who it was he was referring to.s25 Then the disciple whom Jesus lovedt leaned back against Jesus’ chest and asked him, “Lord, who is it?”26 Jesus replied,t “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of breads after I have dipped it in the dish.”t Then he dipped the piece of bread in the disht and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son.27 And after Judast took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him.ts Jesus said to him,t “What you are about to do, do quickly.”28 (Now none of those present at the tablet understoodt why Jesust said this to Judas.t29 Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast,t or to give something to the poor.)s

30 Judast took the piece of bread and went out immediately. (Now it was night.)s

The Prediction of Peter’s Denial

31 Whent Judast had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.32 If God is glorified in him,s God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away.t

33 Children, I am still with you for a little while. You will look for me,t and just as I said to the Jewish religious leaders,t ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’s now I tell you the same.t
34 “I give you a new commandment – to lovet one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.s

35 Everyonet will know by this that you are my disciples – if you have love for one another.”
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied,t “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.”37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”t

38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me?t I tell you the solemn truth,t the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!
