Johannes 13

1 Vor dem Passahfest aber, da Jesus wusste, dass seine Stunde gekommen war, aus dieser Welt zum Vater zu gehen: Wie er die Seinen geliebt hatte, die in der Welt waren, so liebte er sie bis ans Ende. t2 Und während des Mahls, als schon der Teufel dem Judas, Simons Sohn, dem Ischariot, ins Herz gegeben hatte, ihn zu verraten,3 da Jesus wusste, dass ihm der Vater alles in die Hände gegeben hatte und dass er von Gott ausgegangen war und zu Gott hinging,4 stand er vom Mahl auf, legte sein Obergewand ab, nahm einen Schurz und umgürtete sich;5 darauf goss er Wasser in das Becken und fing an, den Jüngern die Füße zu waschen und sie mit dem Schurz zu trocknen, mit dem er umgürtet war.6 Da kommt er zu Simon Petrus, und dieser spricht zu ihm: Herr, du wäschst mir die Füße?7 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Was ich tue, verstehst du jetzt nicht; du wirst es aber danach erkennen.8 Petrus spricht zu ihm: Auf keinen Fall sollst du mir die Füße waschen! Jesus antwortete ihm: Wenn ich dich nicht wasche, so hast du keine Gemeinschaft mit mir.9 Simon Petrus spricht zu ihm: Herr, nicht nur meine Füße, sondern auch die Hände und das Haupt!10 Jesus spricht zu ihm: Wer gebadet ist, hat es nicht nötig, gewaschen zu werden, ausgenommen die Füße, sondern er ist ganz rein. Und ihr seid rein, aber nicht alle.11 Denn er kannte seinen Verräter; darum sagte er: Ihr seid nicht alle rein.12 Nachdem er nun ihre Füße gewaschen und sein Obergewand angezogen hatte, setzte er sich wieder zu Tisch und sprach zu ihnen: Versteht ihr, was ich euch getan habe?13 Ihr nennt mich Meister und Herr t und sagt es mit Recht; denn ich bin es auch.14 Wenn nun ich, der Herr und Meister, euch die Füße gewaschen habe, so sollt t auch ihr einander die Füße waschen;15 denn ein Vorbild habe ich euch gegeben, damit auch ihr so handelt, wie ich an euch gehandelt habe.16 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Der Knecht ist nicht größer als sein Herr, noch der Gesandte größer als der ihn gesandt hat.17 Wenn ihr dies wisst, glückselig seid ihr, wenn ihr es tut!18 Ich rede nicht von euch allen; ich weiß , welche ich erwählt habe. Doch muss die Schrift erfüllt werden: »Der mit mir das Brot isst, hat seine Ferse gegen mich erhoben« . t19 Jetzt sage ich es euch, ehe es geschieht, damit ihr glaubt, wenn es geschehen ist, dass ich es bin.20 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer den aufnimmt, den ich senden werde, der nimmt mich auf; wer aber mich aufnimmt, der nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat.21 Als Jesus dies gesagt hatte, wurde er im Geist erschüttert , und er bezeugte und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Einer von euch wird mich verraten !22 Da sahen die Jünger einander an und wussten nicht, von wem er redete.23 Einer seiner Jünger aber, den Jesus liebte, hatte [bei Tisch] seinen Platz an der Seite Jesu. t24 Diesem winkt nun Simon Petrus, dass er forschen solle, wer es sei, von dem er rede.25 Da lehnt sich jener an die Brust Jesu und spricht zu ihm: Herr, wer ist"s?26 Jesus antwortete: Der ist"s, dem ich den eingetauchten Bissen geben werde. Und er taucht den Bissen ein und gibt ihn dem Judas, Simons Sohn, dem Ischariot.27 Und nach dem Bissen, da fuhr der Satan in ihn. Da spricht Jesus zu ihm: Was du tun willst, das tue bald!28 Es verstand aber keiner von denen, die zu Tisch saßen, wozu er ihm dies sagte.29 Denn etliche meinten, weil Judas den Beutel hatte, sage Jesus zu ihm: Kaufe, was wir zum Fest benötigen!, oder er solle den Armen etwas geben.30 Als nun jener den Bissen genommen hatte, ging er sogleich hinaus. Es war aber Nacht.31 Als er nun hinausgegangen war, sprach Jesus: Jetzt ist der Sohn des Menschen verherrlicht, und Gott ist verherrlicht durch ihn t !32 Wenn Gott verherrlicht ist durch ihn, so wird Gott auch ihn verherrlichen durch sich selbst, und er wird ihn sogleich verherrlichen.33 Kinder t , nur noch eine kleine Weile bin ich bei euch. Ihr werdet mich suchen, und wie ich zu den Juden sagte: Wohin ich gehe, dorthin könnt ihr nicht kommen!, so sage ich es jetzt auch zu euch.34 Ein neues Gebot gebe ich euch, dass ihr einander lieben sollt, damit, wie ich euch geliebt habe, auch ihr einander liebt .35 Daran wird jedermann erkennen, dass ihr meine Jünger seid, wenn ihr Liebe untereinander habt.36 Simon Petrus spricht zu ihm: Herr, wohin gehst du? Jesus antwortete ihm: Wohin ich gehe, dorthin kannst du mir jetzt nicht folgen; du wirst mir aber später folgen.37 Petrus spricht zu ihm: Herr, warum kann ich dir jetzt nicht folgen? Mein Leben will ich für dich lassen!38 Jesus antwortete ihm: Dein Leben willst du für mich lassen? Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Der Hahn wird nicht krähen, bis du mich dreimal verleugnet hast!

Jesus Washes the Feet //of His Disciples

1 It was before Passover, and Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and to return to the Father. He had always loved his followers in this world, and he loved them to the very end.

2 Even before the evening meal started, the devil had made Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, t decide to betray Jesus.
3 Jesus knew he had come from God and would go back to God. He also knew that the Father had given him complete power. 4 So during the meal Jesus got up, removed his outer garment, and wrapped a towel around his waist.

5 He put some water into a large bowl. Then he began washing his disciples' feet and drying them with the towel he was wearing.

6 But when he came to Simon Peter, this disciple asked, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

7 Jesus answered, “You don't really know what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

8 “You will never wash my feet!” Peter replied.
“If I don't wash you,” Jesus told him, “you don't really belong to me.”

9 Peter said, “Lord, don't wash just my feet. Wash my hands and my head.”
10 Jesus answered, “People who have bathed and are clean all over need to wash just their feet. And you, my disciples, are clean, except for one of you.”

11 Jesus knew who would betray him. That is why he said, “except for one of you.”

12  t After Jesus had washed his disciples' feet and had put his outer garment back on, he sat down again.t Then he said:
Do you understand what I have done? 13 You call me your teacher and Lord, and you should, because that is who I am. 14 And if your Lord and teacher has washed your feet, you should do the same for each other. 15 I have set the example, and you should do for each other exactly what I have done for you. 16 t I tell you for certain that servants are not greater than their master, and messengers are not greater than the one who sent them.

17 You know these things, and God will bless you, if you do them.
18  t I am not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But what the Scriptures say must come true. And they say, “The man who ate with me has turned against me!” 19 I am telling you this before it all happens. Then when it does happen, you will believe who I am.t

20 t I tell you for certain that anyone who welcomes my messengers also welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.

Jesus Tells //What Will Happen to Him

(Matthew 26.20-25; Mark 14.17-21; Luke 22.21-23)

22 They were confused about what he meant. And they just stared at each other.
23 Jesus' favorite disciple was sitting next to him at the meal, 24 and Simon motioned for this disciple to find out which one Jesus meant.

25 So the disciple leaned toward Jesus and asked, “Lord, which one of us are you talking about?”

26 Jesus answered, “I will dip this piece of bread in the sauce and give it to the one I was talking about.”
Then Jesus dipped the bread and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.t

27 Right then Satan took control of Judas.
Jesus said, “Judas, go quickly and do what you have to do.” 28 No one at the meal understood what Jesus meant. 29 But because Judas was in charge of the money, some of them thought that Jesus had told him to buy something they needed for the festival. Others thought that Jesus had told him to give some money to the poor.

30 Judas took the piece of bread and went out.
It was already night.

The New Command

31 After Judas had gone, Jesus said:
Now the Son of Man will be given glory, and he will bring glory to God.

32 Then, after God is given glory because of him, God will bring glory to him, and God will do it very soon.
33  t My children, I will be with you for only a little while longer. Then you will look for me, but you won't find me. I tell you just as I told the people, “You cannot go where I am going.” 34 t But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you.

35 If you love each other, everyone will know that you are my disciples.

Peter's Promise

(Matthew 26.31-35; Mark 14.27-31; Luke 22.31-34)

36 Simon Peter asked, “Lord, where are you going?”
Jesus answered, “You can't go with me now, but later on you will.”

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can't I go with you now? I would die for you!”
38 “Would you really die for me?” Jesus asked. “I tell you for certain before a rooster crows, you will say three times that you don't even know me.”
