Giovanni 14

1 Poi Gesù disse ancora: « Non siate tristi. Abbiate fede in Dio e abbiate fede anche in me.2-3 Lassù, nella casa di mio Padre ci sono molti posti: vado a prepararne uno per il vostro arrivo. Quando tutto sarà pronto, tornerò a prendervi, così potrete stare sempre con me. Se non fosse così, ve lo direi chiaramente.4 Ora sapete dove vado e conoscete anche la strada ».5 Tommaso ribatté: « Signore, noi non abbiamo la più pallida idea di dove stai andando, come facciamo a conoscere la strada? »6 Gesù gli disse: « Io sono la via, la verità e la vita. Nessuno può venire al Padre, se non per mezzo mio.7 Se mi aveste conosciuto, avreste anche saputo chi è il Padre, anzi, fin da ora lo conoscete e lo avete già visto! »8 Filippo disse: « Signore, facci vedere il Padre e saremo soddisfatti! »9 Gesù rispose: « Dopo tutto il tempo che ho passato con voi, non sai ancora chi sono io, Filippo? Chi ha visto me, ha visto il Padre. Perché, allora, mi chiedete di vederlo?10 Non credi, forse, che io vivo nel Padre ed il Padre vive in me? Le parole che dico non sono mie, ma di mio Padre, che vive ed agisce attraverso di me.11 Credetemi, quando vi dico che io sono nel Padre e che il Padre è in me, se no, credete in me per i grandi miracoli che mi avete visto compiere!12-13 In tutta sincerità, vi dico che chi crede in me farà gli stessi miracoli che faccio io, anzi più grandi ancora, infatti io ritorno dal Padre e qualsiasi cosa chiederete nel mio nome, io la farò. Questo glorificherà il Padre, proprio perché io, il Figlio, la farò per voi.14 Quindi, chiedete qualunque cosa nel mio nome, ed io la farò!

Gesù promette lo Spirito Santo.

15-16 Se mi amate, mi ubbidirete ed io pregherò il Padre che vi dia un Consolatore, che non vi abbandoni mai più.17 Parlo dello Spirito Santo, lo Spirito della verità. Il mondo non può riceverlo, perché non lo vede e non lo conosce. Voi sì, perché vive con voi, e un giorno sarà in voi.18 No, non vi abbandonerò, né vi lascerò orfani. Tornerò da voi.19 Fra poco me ne andrò dal mondo, ma rimarrò presso di voi. Perché io vivo ed anche voi vivrete.20 Quando resusciterò, saprete senza ombra di dubbio che io vivo unito al Padre, come voi siete uniti a me, ed io a voi.21 Chi mi ubbidisce, mi ama; e chi ama me sarà amato da mio Padre, ed anch’io lo amerò e mi farò conoscere da lui ».22 Giuda, non Giuda Iscariota, ma l’altro con lo stesso nome, gli domandò: « Signore, come mai vuoi farti conoscere soltanto da noi, tuoi discepoli, e non dal mondo? »23 Gesù rispose: « Perché mi rivelerò a quelli che mi amano e mi ubbidiscono. Anche il Padre li amerà e insieme, il Padre ed io, staremo con loro.24 Chi non mi ama, non mi ubbidisce. E badate, non sono io che rispondo alla vostra domanda. Questa è la risposta del Padre, che mi ha mandato!25 Vi dico queste cose adesso, mentre sono ancora con voi.26 Ma quando il Padre manderà al mio posto il Consolatore e, dicendo Consolatore, intendo lo Spirito Santo, egli v’insegnerà ogni cosa e vi ricorderà tutto ciò che vi ho detto.27 Vi lascio un dono: la pace della mente e del cuore! E la pace che do io non è fragile come la pace che dà il mondo. Quindi, non siate tristi, non abbiate paura!28 Ricordate le mie parole: ora me ne vado, ma tornerò da voi. Se davvero mi amate, dovreste essere contenti per me, perché ora posso andare dal Padre, che è più grande di me.29 Vi ho detto queste cose prima che s’avverino, così quando accadranno, crederete in me.30 Non mi resta molto tempo per parlare con voi, perché Satana, il malvagio principe di questo mondo, s’avvicina. Per la verità, non ha alcun potere su di me.31 Sarò io a fare di mia volontà ciò che il Padre vuole da me, così il mondo saprà che amo il Padre. Venite, andiamo! »

John 14

1 Let not your heart be troubled: believe in God, believe also in me.2 In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I come again, and will receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.4 And whither I go, ye know the way.5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; how know we the way?6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me.7 If ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also: from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and dost thou not know me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; how sayest thou, Show us the Father?10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I say unto you I speak not from myself: but the Father abiding in me doeth his works.11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto the Father.13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.14 If ye shall ask anything in my name, that will I do.15 If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments.16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever,17 even the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you.18 I will not leave you desolate: I come unto you.19 Yet a little while, and the world beholdeth me no more; but ye behold me: because I live, ye shall live also.20 In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him.22 Judas (not Iscariot) saith unto him, Lord, what is come to pass that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my words: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me.25 These things have I spoken unto you, while yet abiding with you.26 But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.28 Ye heard how I said to you, I go away, and I come unto you. If ye loved me, ye would have rejoiced, because I go unto the Father: for the Father is greater than I.29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe.30 I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world cometh: and he hath nothing in me;31 but that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
