EVANGELO SECONDO S. GIOVANNI 14

1 Il vostro cuore non sia turbato; abbiate fede in Dio, e abbiate fede anche in me! 2 Nella casa del Padre mio ci son molte dimore; se no, ve l'avrei detto; io vo a prepararvi un luogo; 3 e quando sarò andato e v'avrò preparato un luogo, tornerò, e v'accoglierò presso di me, affinché dove son io, siate anche voi; 4 e del dove io vo sapete anche la via. 5 Toma gli disse: Signore, non sappiamo dove vai; come possiamo saper la via? 6 Gesù gli disse: Io son la via, la verità e la vita; nessuno viene al Padre se non per mezzo di me. 7 Se m'aveste conosciuto, avreste conosciuto anche mio Padre; e fin da ora lo conoscete, e l'avete veduto. 8 Filippo gli disse: Signore, mostraci il Padre, e ci basta. 9 Gesù gli disse: Da tanto tempo sono con voi e tu non m'hai conosciuto, Filippo? Chi ha veduto me, ha veduto il Padre; come mai dici tu: Mostraci il Padre? 10 Non credi tu ch'io sono nel Padre e che il Padre è in me? Le parole che io vi dico, non le dico di mio; ma il Padre che dimora in me, fa le opere sue. 11 Credetemi che io sono nel Padre e che il Padre è in me; se no, credete a cagion di quelle opere stesse. 12 In verità, in verità vi dico che chi crede in me farà anch'egli le opere che fo io; e ne farà di maggiori, perché io me ne vo al Padre; 13 e quel che chiederete nel mio nome, lo farò; affinché il Padre sia glorificato nel Figliuolo. 14 Se chiederete qualche cosa nel mio nome, io la farò. 15 Se voi mi amate, osserverete i miei comandamenti. 16 E io pregherò il Padre, ed Egli vi darà un altro Consolatore, perché stia con voi in perpetuo, 17 lo Spirito della verità, che il mondo non può ricevere, perché non lo vede e non lo conosce. Voi lo conoscete, perché dimora con voi, e sarà in voi. 18 Non vi lascerò orfani; tornerò a voi. 19 Ancora un po', e il mondo non mi vedrà più; ma voi mi vedrete, perché io vivo e voi vivrete. 20 In quel giorno conoscerete che io sono nel Padre mio, e voi in me ed io in voi. 21 Chi ha i miei comandamenti e li osserva, quello mi ama; e chi mi ama sarà amato dal Padre mio, e io l'amerò e mi manifesterò a lui. 22 Giuda (non l'Iscariota) gli domandò: Signore, come mai ti manifesterai a noi e non al mondo? 23 Gesù rispose e gli disse: Se uno mi ama, osserverà la mia parola; e il Padre mio l'amerà, e noi verremo a lui e faremo dimora presso di lui. 24 Chi non mi ama non osserva le mie parole; e la parola che voi udite non è mia, ma è del Padre che mi ha mandato. 25 Queste cose v'ho detto, stando ancora con voi; 26 ma il Consolatore, lo Spirito Santo che il Padre manderà nel mio nome, egli v'insegnerà ogni cosa e vi rammenterà tutto quello che v'ho detto. 27 Io vi lascio pace; vi do la mia pace. Io non vi do come il mondo dà. Il vostro cuore non sia turbato e non si sgomenti. 28 Avete udito che v'ho detto: ‘Io me ne vo, e torno a voi’; se voi m'amaste, vi rallegrereste ch'io vo al Padre, perché il Padre è maggiore di me. 29 E ora ve l'ho detto prima che avvenga, affinché, quando sarà avvenuto, crediate. 30 Io non parlerò più molto con voi, perché viene il principe di questo mondo. Ed esso non ha nulla in me; 31 ma così avviene, affinché il mondo conosca che amo il Padre, e opero come il Padre m'ha ordinato. Levatevi, andiamo via di qui.

JOHN 14

Jesus Is the Way //to the Father

1 Jesus said to his disciples, “Don't be worried! Have faith in God and have faith in me.t 2 There are many rooms in my Father's house. I wouldn't tell you this, unless it was true. I am going there to prepare a place for each of you. 3 After I have done this, I will come back and take you with me. Then we will be together.

4 You know the way to where I am going.”

5 Thomas said, “Lord, we don't even know where you are going! How can we know the way?”
6  t “I am the way, the truth, and the life!” Jesus answered. “Without me, no one can go to the Father.

7 If you had really known me, you would have known the Father. But from now on, you do know him, and you have seen him.”

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need.”

9 Jesus replied:
Philip, I have been with you for a long time. Don't you know who I am? If you have seen me, you have seen the Father. How can you ask me to show you the Father?

10 Don't you believe that I am one with the Father and that the Father is one with me? What I say isn't said on my own. The Father who lives in me does these things.
11 Have faith in me when I say that the Father is one with me and that I am one with the Father. Or else have faith in me simply because of the things I do. 12 I tell you for certain that if you have faith in me, you will do the same things I am doing. You will do even greater things, now that I am going back to the Father. 13 Ask me, and I will do whatever you ask. This way the Son will bring honor to the Father.

14 I will do whatever you ask me to do.

The Holy Spirit Is Promised

15  t Jesus said to his disciples:
If you love me, you will do as I command. 16 Then I will ask the Father to send you the Holy Spirit who will helpt you and always be with you.

17 The Spirit will show you what is true. The people of this world cannot accept the Spirit, because they don't see or know him. But you know the Spirit, who is with you and will keep on living in you.
18 I won't leave you like orphans. I will come back to you. 19 In a little while the people of this world won't be able to see me, but you will see me. And because I live, you will live. 20 Then you will know I am one with the Father. You will know you are one with me, and I am one with you.

21 t If you love me, you will do what I have said, and my Father will love you. I will also love you and show you what I am like.

22 The other Judas, not Judas Iscariot, t then spoke up and asked, “Lord, what do you mean by saying that you will show us what you are like, but you will not show the people of this world?”

23 Jesus replied:
If anyone loves me, they will obey me. Then my Father will love them, and we will come to them and live in them.

24 But anyone who doesn't love me, won't obey me. What they have heard me say doesn't really come from me, but from the Father who sent me.
25 I have told you these things while I am still with you.

26 But the Holy Spirit will come and helpt you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you.

27 I give you peace, the kind of peace only I can give. It isn't like the peace this world can give. So don't be worried or afraid.

28 You have already heard me say I am going and I will also come back to you. If you really love me, you should be glad I am going back to the Father, because he is greater than I am.
29 I am telling you this before I leave, so when it does happen, you will have faith in me. 30 I cannot speak with you much longer, because the ruler of this world is coming. But he has no power over me.

31 I obey my Father, so everyone in the world might know that I love him.
It is time for us to go now.
