Jesús, el camino al Padre

1 »No dejen que el corazón se les llene de angustia; confíen en Dios y confíen también en mí. 2 En el hogar de mi Padre, hay lugar más que suficiente.t Si no fuera así, ¿acaso les habría dicho que voy a prepararles un lugar?t 3 Cuando todo esté listo, volveré para llevarlos, para que siempre estén conmigo donde yo estoy. 4 Y ustedes conocen el camino que lleva adonde voy.

5 —No, Señor, no lo conocemos —dijo Tomás—. No tenemos ni idea de adónde vas, ¿cómo vamos a conocer el camino?

6 Jesús le contestó:
—Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida; nadie puede ir al Padre si no es por medio de mí. 7 Si ustedes realmente me conocieran, también sabrían quién es mi Padre.t De ahora en adelante, ya lo conocen y lo han visto.

8 Felipe le dijo:
—Señor, muéstranos al Padre y quedaremos conformes.

9 Jesús respondió:
—Felipe, ¿he estado con ustedes todo este tiempo, y todavía no sabes quién soy? ¡Los que me han visto a mí han visto al Padre! Entonces, ¿cómo me pides que les muestre al Padre? 10 ¿Acaso no crees que yo estoy en el Padre y el Padre está en mí? Las palabras que yo digo no son mías, sino que mi Padre, quien vive en mí, hace su obra por medio de mí. 11 Sólo crean que yo estoy en el Padre y el Padre está en mí; o al menos crean por las obras que me han visto hacer.

12 »Les digo la verdad, todo el que crea en mí hará las mismas obras que yo he hecho y aún mayores, porque voy a estar con el Padre. 13 Pueden pedir cualquier cosa en mi nombre, y yo la haré, para que el Hijo le dé gloria al Padre. 14 Es cierto, pídanme cualquier cosa en mi nombre, ¡y yo la haré!

Jesús promete el Espíritu Santo

15 »Si me aman, obedezcant mis mandamientos. 16 Y yo le pediré al Padre, y él les dará otro Abogado Defensor,t quien estará con ustedes para siempre. 17 Me refiero al Espíritu Santo, quien guía a toda la verdad. El mundo no puede recibirlo porque no lo busca ni lo reconoce; pero ustedes sí lo conocen, porque ahora él vive con ustedes y después estará en ustedes.t 18 No los abandonaré como a huérfanos; vendré a ustedes. 19 Dentro de poco, el mundo no me verá más, pero ustedes sí me verán. Dado que yo vivo, ustedes también vivirán. 20 Cuando yo vuelva a la vida, ustedes sabrán que estoy en mi Padre y que ustedes están en mí, y yo, en ustedes. 21 Los que aceptan mis mandamientos y los obedecen son los que me aman. Y, porque me aman a mí, mi Padre los amará a ellos. Y yo los amaré y me daré a conocer a cada uno de ellos.

22 Judas (no Judas Iscariote, sino el otro discípulo con el mismo nombre) le dijo:
—Señor, ¿por qué te darás a conocer sólo a nosotros y no al mundo en general?

23 Jesús contestó:
—Todos los que me aman harán lo que yo diga. Mi Padre los amará, y vendremos para vivir con cada uno de ellos. 24 El que no me ama no me obedece. Y recuerden, mis palabras no son mías, lo que les hablo proviene del Padre, quien me envió. 25 Les digo estas cosas ahora, mientras todavía estoy con ustedes. 26 Sin embargo, cuando el Padre envíe al Abogado Defensor como mi representante —es decir, al Espíritu Santo—, él les enseñará todo y les recordará cada cosa que les he dicho.

27 »Les dejo un regalo: paz en la mente y en el corazón. Y la paz que yo doy es un regalo que el mundo no puede dar. Así que no se angustien ni tengan miedo. 28 Recuerden lo que les dije: me voy, pero volveré a ustedes. Si de veras me amaran, se alegrarían de que voy al Padre, quien es más importante que yo. 29 Les he dicho estas cosas antes de que sucedan para que, cuando sucedan, ustedes crean.

30 »No me queda mucho tiempo para hablar con ustedes, porque se acerca el que gobierna este mundo. Él no tiene ningún poder sobre mí, 31 pero haré lo que el Padre me manda, para que el mundo sepa que amo al Padre. Vamos, salgamos de aquí.

JOHN 14

Jesus Is the Way //to the Father

1 Jesus said to his disciples, “Don't be worried! Have faith in God and have faith in me.t 2 There are many rooms in my Father's house. I wouldn't tell you this, unless it was true. I am going there to prepare a place for each of you. 3 After I have done this, I will come back and take you with me. Then we will be together.

4 You know the way to where I am going.”

5 Thomas said, “Lord, we don't even know where you are going! How can we know the way?”
6  t “I am the way, the truth, and the life!” Jesus answered. “Without me, no one can go to the Father.

7 If you had really known me, you would have known the Father. But from now on, you do know him, and you have seen him.”

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need.”

9 Jesus replied:
Philip, I have been with you for a long time. Don't you know who I am? If you have seen me, you have seen the Father. How can you ask me to show you the Father?

10 Don't you believe that I am one with the Father and that the Father is one with me? What I say isn't said on my own. The Father who lives in me does these things.
11 Have faith in me when I say that the Father is one with me and that I am one with the Father. Or else have faith in me simply because of the things I do. 12 I tell you for certain that if you have faith in me, you will do the same things I am doing. You will do even greater things, now that I am going back to the Father. 13 Ask me, and I will do whatever you ask. This way the Son will bring honor to the Father.

14 I will do whatever you ask me to do.

The Holy Spirit Is Promised

15  t Jesus said to his disciples:
If you love me, you will do as I command. 16 Then I will ask the Father to send you the Holy Spirit who will helpt you and always be with you.

17 The Spirit will show you what is true. The people of this world cannot accept the Spirit, because they don't see or know him. But you know the Spirit, who is with you and will keep on living in you.
18 I won't leave you like orphans. I will come back to you. 19 In a little while the people of this world won't be able to see me, but you will see me. And because I live, you will live. 20 Then you will know I am one with the Father. You will know you are one with me, and I am one with you.

21 t If you love me, you will do what I have said, and my Father will love you. I will also love you and show you what I am like.

22 The other Judas, not Judas Iscariot, t then spoke up and asked, “Lord, what do you mean by saying that you will show us what you are like, but you will not show the people of this world?”

23 Jesus replied:
If anyone loves me, they will obey me. Then my Father will love them, and we will come to them and live in them.

24 But anyone who doesn't love me, won't obey me. What they have heard me say doesn't really come from me, but from the Father who sent me.
25 I have told you these things while I am still with you.

26 But the Holy Spirit will come and helpt you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you.

27 I give you peace, the kind of peace only I can give. It isn't like the peace this world can give. So don't be worried or afraid.

28 You have already heard me say I am going and I will also come back to you. If you really love me, you should be glad I am going back to the Father, because he is greater than I am.
29 I am telling you this before I leave, so when it does happen, you will have faith in me. 30 I cannot speak with you much longer, because the ruler of this world is coming. But he has no power over me.

31 I obey my Father, so everyone in the world might know that I love him.
It is time for us to go now.
