EVANGELO SECONDO S. GIOVANNI 15

1 Io sono la vera vite, e il Padre mio è il vignaiuolo. Ogni tralcio che in me non dà frutto, 2 Egli lo toglie via; e ogni tralcio che dà frutto, lo rimonda affinché ne dia di più. 3 Voi siete già mondi a motivo della parola che v'ho annunziata. 4 Dimorate in me, e io dimorerò in voi. Come il tralcio non può da sé dar frutto se non rimane nella vite, così neppur voi, se non dimorate in me. 5 Io son la vite, voi siete i tralci. Colui che dimora in me e nel quale io dimoro, porta molto frutto; perché senza di me non potete far nulla. 6 Se uno non dimora in me, è gettato via come il tralcio, e si secca; cotesti tralci si raccolgono, si gettano nel fuoco e si bruciano. 7 Se dimorate in me e le mie parole dimorano in voi, domandate quel che volete e vi sarà fatto. 8 In questo è glorificato il Padre mio: che portiate molto frutto, e così sarete miei discepoli. 9 Come il Padre mi ha amato, così anch'io ho amato voi; dimorate nel mio amore. 10 Se osservate i miei comandamenti, dimorerete nel mio amore; com'io ho osservato i comandamenti del Padre mio, e dimoro nel suo amore. 11 Queste cose vi ho detto, affinché la mia allegrezza dimori in voi, e la vostra allegrezza sia resa completa. 12 Questo è il mio comandamento: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri, come io ho amato voi. 13 Nessuno ha amore più grande che quello di dar la sua vita per i suoi amici. 14 Voi siete miei amici, se fate le cose che vi comando. 15 Io non vi chiamo più servi; perché il servo non sa quel che fa il suo signore; ma voi vi ho chiamati amici, perché vi ho fatto conoscere tutte le cose che ho udite dal Padre mio. 16 Non siete voi che avete scelto me, ma son io che ho scelto voi, e v'ho costituiti perché andiate, e portiate frutto, e il vostro frutto sia permanente; affinché tutto quel che chiederete al Padre nel mio nome, Egli ve lo dia. 17 Questo vi comando: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri. 18 Se il mondo vi odia, sapete bene che prima di voi ha odiato me. 19 Se foste del mondo, il mondo amerebbe quel ch'è suo; ma perché non siete del mondo, ma io v'ho scelti di mezzo al mondo, perciò vi odia il mondo. 20 Ricordatevi della parola che v'ho detta: Il servitore non è da più del suo signore. Se hanno perseguitato me, perseguiteranno anche voi; se hanno osservato la mia parola, osserveranno anche la vostra. 21 Ma tutto questo ve lo faranno a cagion del mio nome, perché non conoscono Colui che m'ha mandato. 22 S'io non fossi venuto e non avessi loro parlato, non avrebbero colpa; ma ora non hanno scusa del loro peccato. 23 Chi odia me, odia anche il Padre mio. 24 Se non avessi fatto tra loro le opere che nessun altro ha fatte mai, non avrebbero colpa; ma ora le hanno vedute, ed hanno odiato e me e il Padre mio. 25 Ma quest'è avvenuto affinché sia adempita la parola scritta nella loro legge: Mi hanno odiato senza cagione. 26 Ma quando sarà venuto il Consolatore che io vi manderò da parte del Padre, lo Spirito della verità che procede dal Padre, egli testimonierà di me; 27 e anche voi mi renderete testimonianza, perché siete stati meco fin dal principio.

Jesus Is the True Vine

1 Jesus said to his disciples:
I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts away every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit. But he trims clean every branch that does produce fruit, so that it will produce even more fruit.

3 You are already clean because of what I have said to you.
4 Stay joined to me, and I will stay joined to you. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit unless it stays joined to the vine, you cannot produce fruit unless you stay joined to me. 5 I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you stay joined to me, and I stay joined to you, then you will produce lots of fruit. But you cannot do anything without me.

6 If you don't stay joined to me, you will be thrown away. You will be like dry branches that are gathered up and burned in a fire.
7 Stay joined to me and let my teachings become part of you. Then you can pray for whatever you want, and your prayer will be answered. 8 When you become fruitful disciples of mine, my Father will be honored. 9 I have loved you, just as my Father has loved me. So remain faithful to my love for you.

10 If you obey me, I will keep loving you, just as my Father keeps loving me, because I have obeyed him.
11 I have told you this to make you as completely happy as I am. 12 t Now I tell you to love each other, as I have loved you. 13 The greatest way to show love for friends is to die for them. 14 And you are my friends, if you obey me.

15 Servants don't know what their master is doing, and so I don't speak to you as my servants. I speak to you as my friends, and I have told you everything my Father has told me.
16 You did not choose me. I chose you and sent you out to produce fruit, the kind of fruit that will last. Then my Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name.t

17 So I command you to love each other.

The World's Hatred

20 t Remember how I told you that servants are not greater than their master. So if people mistreat me, they will mistreat you. If they do what I say, they will do what you say.
21 People will do to you exactly what they did to me. They will do it because you belong to me, and they don't know the one who sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin.
23 Everyone who hates me also hates my Father. 24 I have done things no one else has ever done. If they had not seen me do these things, they would not be guilty. But they did see me do these things, and they still hate me and my Father too.

25 t This is why the Scriptures are true when they say, “People hated me for no reason.”
26 I will send you the Spirit who comes from the Father and shows what is true. The Spirit will helpt you and will tell you about me. 27 Then you will also tell others about me, because you have been with me from the beginning.
