1 tJe vous ai parlé ainsi afin qu’il n’y ait pour vous aucune cause de chute. 2 tIls vous excluront des synagogues ; l’heure vient même où quiconque vous tuera pensera offrir un culte à Dieu. 3 tEt ils feront cela parce qu’ils n’ont jamais connu ni le Père ni moi.
4 tJe vous ai parlé ainsi pour que, l’heure venue, vous vous souveniez que, moi, je vous l’ai dit.L’œuvre du « Défenseur »
Je ne vous l’ai pas dit depuis le commencement, parce que j’étais avec vous. 5 tMaintenant, je m’en vais vers celui qui m’a envoyé, et aucun de vous ne me demande : « Où vas-tu ? » 6 tMais parce que je vous ai parlé ainsi, la tristesse a rempli votre cœur. 7 tCependant, moi, je vous dis la vérité : il est avantageux pour vous que, moi, je m’en aille ; car si je ne m’en vais pas, le Défenseur ne viendra pas à vous ; mais si je m’en vais, je vous l’enverrai. 8 tQuand il sera venu, lui, il confondra le monde en matière de péché, de justice et de jugement : 9 ten matière de péché, parce qu’ils ne mettent pas leur foi en moi ; 10 ten matière de justice, parce que je m’en vais vers le Père, et que vous ne me verrez plus ;
11 ten matière de jugement, parce que le prince de ce monde est jugé.
12 tJ’ai encore beaucoup à vous dire, mais vous ne pouvez pas le porter maintenant. 13 tQuand il viendra, lui, l’Esprit de la vérité, il vous conduira dans toute la vérité ; car il ne parlera pas de sa propre initiative, mais il dira tout ce qu’il entendra et il vous annoncera ce qui est à venir. 14 tLui me glorifiera, parce qu’il prendra de ce qui est à moi pour vous l’annoncer.
15 tTout ce qu’a le Père est à moi ; c’est pourquoi j’ai dit qu’il prendra de ce qui est à moi pour vous l’annoncer.La tristesse changée en joie
16 tEncore un peu, et vous ne me verrez plus ; puis encore un peu, et vous me verrez. 17 Quelques-uns de ses disciples se dirent donc les uns aux autres : Qu’est-ce qu’il nous dit là ? « Encore un peu, et vous ne me verrez plus ; puis encore un peu, et vous me verrez », et : « Je m’en vais vers le Père. »
18 tIls disaient donc : Que dit-il là : « un peu » ? Nous ne savons pas de quoi il parle.
19 tSachant qu’ils voulaient l’interroger, Jésus leur dit : Vous débattez entre vous de ce que j’ai dit : « Encore un peu, et vous ne me verrez plus ; puis encore un peu, et vous me verrez. » 20 tAmen, amen, je vous le dis, vous, vous pleurerez et vous vous lamenterez, tandis que le monde se réjouira : vous, vous serez tristes, mais votre tristesse se changera en joie. 21 tLa femme, lorsqu’elle accouche, a de la tristesse, parce que son heure est venue ; mais quand elle a donné le jour à l’enfant, elle ne se souvient plus de la détresse, tant elle a de joie qu’un homme soit venu au monde.
22 tAinsi, vous, maintenant, vous éprouvez de la tristesse ; mais je vous reverrai : votre cœur se réjouira, et personne ne vous enlèvera votre joie.
23 tEn ce jour-là, vous ne me demanderez plus rien.Amen, amen, je vous le dis, ce que vous demanderez au Père, il vous le donnera en mon nom.
24 tJusqu’à présent, vous n’avez rien demandé en mon nom. Demandez et vous recevrez, pour que votre joie soit complète.Jésus, vainqueur du monde
25 tJe vous ai dit tout cela en discours figurés. L’heure vient où je ne vous tiendrai plus de discours figurés, mais où je vous annoncerai ouvertement ce qui concerne le Père. 26 tEn ce jour-là, vous demanderez en mon nom, et je ne vous dis pas que c’est moi qui demanderai au Père pour vous ; 27 ten effet, le Père lui-même est votre ami, parce que, vous, vous avez été mes amis et vous avez acquis la conviction que, moi, je suis sorti de Dieu.
28 tJe suis sorti du Père et je suis venu dans le monde ; maintenant, je quitte le monde et je vais vers le Père.
29 tSes disciples disent : Maintenant, tu parles ouvertement et tu ne tiens plus de discours figurés. 30 tMaintenant, nous savons que tu sais tout et que tu n’as pas besoin que personne t’interroge ; c’est pourquoi nous croyons que tu es sorti de Dieu. 31 tJésus leur répondit : Vous croyez, maintenant ? 32 tL’heure vient – elle est venue – où vous serez dispersés chacun de son côté, et où vous me laisserez seul ; mais je ne suis pas seul, car le Père est avec moi. 33 tJe vous ai parlé ainsi pour que vous ayez la paix en moi. Dans le monde, vous connaissez la détresse, mais courage ! Moi, j’ai vaincu le monde.

1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble.2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God.3 And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me.4 But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you.5 But now I go unto him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?6 But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you.8 And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:9 of sin, because they believe not on me;10 of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more;11 of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged.12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.14 He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you.15 All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare it unto you.16 A little while, and ye behold me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me.17 Some of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye behold me not; and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he saith.19 Jesus perceived that they were desirous to ask him, and he said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world.22 And ye therefore now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh away from you.23 And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, if ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name.24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full.25 These things have I spoken unto you in dark sayings: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings, but shall tell you plainly of the Father.26 In that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you;27 for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father.28 I came out from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go unto the Father.29 His disciples say, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no dark saying.30 Now know we that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.33 These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
