JOHANNES 16

1 "Ek het hierdie dinge nou vir julle uitgespel sodat julle nie struikel nie.2 Hulle sal julle uit die sinagoges ban. Daar kom 'n tyd dat elkeen wat vir julle doodmaak, sal dink hy bewys 'n besondere guns aan God.3 Hulle sal hierdie dinge doen omdat hulle nie My of die Vader geken het nie.

4 Ek het dit nou vir julle gesê sodat, wanneer hulle uur ook al slaan, julle moet onthou dat Ek dit vir julle gesê het. Ek het dit egter nie van die heel begin af vir julle gesê nie omdat Ek nog heeltyd saam met julle was."

Jesus se weggaan is tot die dissipels se voordeel

5 "Nou is Ek op pad terug na Hom toe wat My gestuur het; tog vra niemand van julle vir My: 'Waarheen gaan U?' nie.6 Omdat Ek dit egter vir julle gesê het, het hartseer julle harte oorweldig.7 Laat Ek julle egter die waarheid vertel: Dit is tot julle voordeel dat Ek weggaan, want as Ek nie weggaan nie, sal die Raadgewer, die Heilige Gees, nie na julle toe kom nie. As Ek egter weggaan, sal Ek die Raadgewer na julle toe stuur.8 En wanneer Hy kom, sal Hy die wêreld oortuig van sy sonde, van God se regverdige oordeel, en dat die oordeel hier is.9 Van sonde, omdat die wêreld nie in My glo nie;10 van God se regverdige oordeel, omdat Ek teruggaan na die Vader toe en julle My nie meer sien nie;

11 van veroordeling, omdat die regeerder van hierdie wêreld reeds veroordeel is.
12 "Ek het nog baie dinge om vir julle te sê, maar julle kan dit nie nou verwerk nie.13 Wanneer Hy ook al kom, die Gees van die waarheid, sal Hy julle begelei in die volle waarheid. Hy sal nie uit Homself praat nie, maar net sê wat Hy hoor. Hy sal die dinge wat gaan kom, aan julle meedeel.14 Hy sal My verheerlik omdat Hy dit wat Hy van My sal ontvang, aan julle sal meedeel.

15 Alles waaroor die Vader beskik, behoort ook aan My; daarom dat Ek gesê het: 'Wat Hy van My ontvang, sal Hy aan julle meedeel.'"

Blywende blydskap maak die tydelike hartseer draaglik

16 "Nog net 'n kort tydjie, en julle sien My nie meer nie; en weer 'n kort tydjie, dan sal julle My weer sien."
17 Sommige van sy dissipels het toe vir mekaar gesê: "Wat beteken dit dat Hy vir ons sê: 'Nog net 'n kort tydjie, dan sien julle My nie meer nie, en weer 'n kort tydjie, dan sal julle My weer sien' en: 'Ek gaan na die Vader toe'?

18 Hierdie 'kort tydjie' waarvan Hy praat, wat beteken dit tog? Ons verstaan nie wat Hy bedoel nie," het hulle gesê.
19 Jesus het agtergekom dat hulle Hom daaroor wou uitvra, en Hy sê toe vir hulle: "Probeer julle onder mekaar agterkom wat Ek bedoel het met: 'Nog 'n kort tydjie, dan sien julle My nie; en weer 'n kort tydjie, dan sal julle My weer sien'?20 Ek verseker julle, julle sal huil en treur, maar die wêreld sal juig. Julle sal baie hartseer wees, maar julle hartseer sal in blydskap verander.21 'n Vrou het pyn wanneer sy geboorte skenk omdat haar tyd gekom het. Wanneer die baba egter gebore is, onthou sy nie meer die swaarkry nie vanweë die groot blydskap dat daar 'n mens in die wêreld gekom het.22 Julle ondervind ook nou hartseer. As Ek julle egter weer sien, sal julle harte oorloop van blydskap, en niemand sal dié blydskap weer van julle af wegneem nie.23 En op daardie dag sal julle My niks meer uitvra nie. Ek verseker julle, wat julle ook al van die Vader vra in my Naam, sal Hy aan julle gee.

24 Tot nou toe het julle nog nie in my Naam gebid nie. Hou aan bid, en julle sal ontvang, sodat julle blydskap volledig kan wees.
25 "Dit het Ek met behulp van beeldspraak aan julle verduidelik. Daar kom 'n tyd wanneer Ek nie meer met behulp van beeldspraak met julle sal praat nie, maar openlik die Vader aan julle sal verkondig.26 Op daardie dag sal julle in my Naam bid. Ek sê nie dat Ek die Vader sal raadpleeg oor julle nie,27 want die Vader self het julle lief omdat julle My lankal reeds liefgehad het, en vas glo dat Ek van God af gekom het.

28 Ek het van die Vader af gekom en bevind My nou in hierdie wêreld. Ek verlaat weer die wêreld en gaan terug na die Vader toe."
29 Sy dissipels sê toe: "Kyk, nou praat U openlik, en U doen dit sonder enige beeldspraak.

30 Ons besef ook nou dat U alles weet en niemand hoef U verder uit te vra nie. Daardeur is ons oortuig dat U van God af gekom het."
31 Jesus het hulle geantwoord: "Glo julle nou?32 Kyk, daar kom 'n tyd, en dit het reeds aangebreek, dat julle uitmekaargedryf sal word, elkeen op sy eie, terwyl julle My alleen agterlaat. Tog is Ek nie alleen nie, omdat die Vader by My is.

33 Ek sê hierdie dinge vir julle sodat julle in My rus en vrede kan vind. In die wêreld sal julle swaarkry beleef, maar skep moed: Ek het die wêreld reeds oorwin."

JOHN 16

1 I am telling you these things, so that you will not turn away. 2 You will be chased out of the synagogues. And the time will come when people will kill you and think they are doing God a favor. 3 They will do these things because they don't know either the Father or me.

4 I am saying this to you now, so that when the time comes, you will remember what I have said.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

7 But I tell you I am going to do what is best for you. This is why I am going away. The Holy Spirit cannot come to helpt you until I leave. But after I am gone, I will send the Spirit to you.
8 The Spirit will come and show the people of this world the truth about sin and God's justice and the judgment. 9 The Spirit will show them that they are wrong about sin, because they didn't have faith in me. 10 They are wrong about God's justice, because I am going to the Father, and you won't see me again.

11 And they are wrong about the judgment, because God has already judged the ruler of this world.
12 I have much more to say to you, but right now it would be more than you could understand. 13 t The Spirit shows what is true and will come and guide you into the full truth. The Spirit doesn't speak on his own. He will tell you only what he has heard from me, and he will let you know what is going to happen. 14 The Spirit will bring glory to me by taking my message and telling it to you.

15 Everything the Father has is mine. This is why I have said that the Spirit takes my message and tells it to you.

Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 Jesus told his disciples, “For a little while you won't see me, but after a while you will see me.”
17 They said to each other, “What does Jesus mean by saying that for a little while we won't see him, but after a while we will see him? What does he mean by saying he is going to the Father?

18 What is this ‘little while’ that he is talking about? We don't know what he means.”

19 Jesus knew they had some questions, so he said:
You are wondering what I meant when I said that for a little while you won't see me, but after a while you will see me.

20 I tell you for certain that you will cry and be sad, but the world will be happy. You will be sad, but later you will be happy.
21 When a woman is about to give birth, she is in great pain. But after it is all over, she forgets the pain and is happy, because she has brought a child into the world. 22 You are now very sad. But later I will see you, and you will be so happy that no one will be able to change the way you feel. 23 When that time comes, you won't have to ask me about anything. I tell you for certain the Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name.

24 You have not asked for anything in this way before, but now you must ask in my name.t Then it will be given to you, so you will be completely happy.
25 I have used examples to explain to you what I have been talking about. But the time will come when I will speak to you plainly about the Father and will no longer use examples like these. 26 You will ask the Father in my name, t and I won't have to ask him for you. 27 God the Father loves you because you love me, and you believe I have come from him.

28 I came from the Father into the world, but I am leaving the world and returning to the Father.
29 The disciples said, “Now you are speaking plainly to us! You are not using examples.

30 At last we know that you understand everything, and we don't have any more questions. Now we believe you truly have come from God.”

31 Jesus replied:
Do you really believe me? 32 The time will come and is already here when all of you will be scattered. Each of you will go back home and leave me by myself. But the Father will be with me, and I won't be alone. 33 I have told you this, so that you might have peace in your hearts because of me. While you are in the world, you will have to suffer. But cheer up! I have defeated the world.t
