ヨハネによる福音書 18

一八

1 　ようやく話し終えると、イエスは弟子たちといっしょに出かけ、ケデロンの谷を横切り、とあるオリーブ園に入って行かれました。　2 裏切り者のユダも知っている場所でした。　前によく弟子たちと、ここに来たことがあったのです。
3 　祭司長とパリサイ人たちは、一個大隊の兵士と神殿警備員たちをユダにつけてやりました。　手に手にあかあかと燃えるたいまつやランプをかざし、武器を引っ下げた一隊が、オリーブ園に押しかけます。
4-5 イエスは、自分の身に起こることを何もかもご存じだったので、少しもあわてません。　前に進み出て人々を迎えました。　裏切り者のユダもいっしょです。　「だれを捜しているのですか。」
「ナザレのイエス！」
「わたしがイエスです。」　6 このイエスのことばに、人々はみな息をのんであとずさりし、ばたばたとあお向けに倒れました。
7 　イエスはもう一度お尋ねになりました。　「だれを捜しているのですか。」
「ナザレのイエス。」
8 　「わたしがそうだと言ったではありませんか。　目当てがこのわたしなら、ほかの者は関係ありません。　このまま帰らせてあげなさい。」　9 こうおっしゃったのは、さっき、「わたしに下さった人たちを、ただの一人も失いませんでした」と言ったとおりになるためでした。
10 　その時、シモン・ペテロは剣を抜き放ち、大祭司の部下、マルコスの右の耳を切り落としました。
11 　しかし、イエスはペテロをたしなめました。　「剣をさやに納めなさい。　父が下さった杯は飲まなければならないのです。」
12 　これを聞くと、ユダヤ人の警備員たちは、大隊長や兵士たちといっしょに、やにわに襲いかかり、イエスを縛り上げてしまいました。　13 彼らがまずイエスを引っ立てて行ったのは、その年の大祭司カヤパのしゅうとアンナスのところでした。　14 カヤパは以前、ユダヤ人の指導者たちに、「一人の人が、全国民の代わりに死ぬほうが得策だ」と助言した人物です。　15 シモン・ペテロは、もう一人の弟子といっしょに、恐る恐るイエスについて行きました。　その弟子はうまいぐあいに大祭司の知り合いだったので、イエスといっしょに中庭に入れてもらえましたが、　16 ペテロは、じりじりしながら、門の外に立っているほかありません。　そこへあの弟子が来て、門番の女に頼み込んだので、やっと入れてもらえることになりました。　17 ほっとしたのもつかの間、女は、まじまじとペテロを見やり、「ねえ、ちょっと、あんた、イエスの弟子じゃない？」と聞くではありませんか。
「とんでもない、何を言うんだい。」そらとぼけてその場はなんとか切り抜けました。
18 　寒い日でした。　警備員や召使たちは、炭火をかこんで、暖まっています。　ペテロも何くわぬ顔で、いっしょに立って暖まっていました。
19 　中ではいよいよ、大祭司がイエスに、弟子たちのことや教えの内容などについて、尋問を始めたところです。
20 　イエスはお答えになりました。　「わたしの教えは、わかっているでしょう。　いつも会堂や宮で教えたのですから。　ユダヤ人の指導者の皆さんも、聞いておられたはずです。　それ以外に、隠れて別のことを教えたことはありません。　21 どうして、そんな質問をするのですか。　そのようなことは、わたしの話を聞いた人たちに尋ねればすむのに。　ここにも何人かはいるでしょう。　わたしが何を言ったか、その人たちが一番よく知っています。」
22 　「無礼者！　それが、大祭司様に対する口のきき方かっ！」そばに立っていた役人の一人が、どなりつけざま、平手でイエスをなぐりました。
23 　イエスは、お答えになりました。　「何か、まちがったことでも言いましたか。　だったら、証拠を見せてください。　正しいことを言う者をなぐる法はないはずです。」
24 　こうしたやりとりのあと、アンナスはイエスを、縛ったまま、大祭司カヤパのところに回しました。
25 　一方、シモン・ペテロはどうしたでしょう。　火のそばで暖まっていると、またしても人々が、「あんた、あの人の弟子じゃないかね」と問い詰めるではありませんか。
「弟子だって？　冗談じゃない。」
26 　こう答えたものの、まずいことに、ペテロが耳を切り落とした、あの大祭司の部下の親類にあたる者が居合わせたのです。　「しらばっくれてもだめだぜ。　あのオリーブ園で、確かにイエスといっしょだったぞ。」
27 　こうまで言われても、ペテロはあくまで白をきりました。　と、その時、鶏の鳴く声が聞こえました。
裁判を受けるイエス
28 　カヤパの取り調べは、その朝早く終わり、今度はローマ総督の番です。　訴える人々は、イエスを総督官邸まで連れて行きましたが、中へは入ろうとしません。　そんなことをしたら、身が汚れて、過越の小羊が食べられなくなるというのです。　（ユダヤ教のおきてでは、異教徒の家に入ることは、たいへん汚らわしいことだったのです。）　29 それで、総督ピラトがわざわざ外に出て来て、問いただしました。　「何を告発するのか。　いったいこの男はどんな悪事を働いたのだ。」
30 　「やつが犯罪人でないなら、逮捕したりはいたしません！」彼らも負けずにやり返します。
31 　「そうか。　だったら、おまえたちが裁判したらよかろう。　おまえたちの法律に従ってな。」
「お忘れですか。　私どもにはこの男を死刑にする権利はないのですよ。　ぜひとも閣下のご承認がいただきたいですな。」　32 こうして、自分がどのような方法で処刑されるか、イエスが前もって話しておられたことが、現実となったのです（マタイ二○・一九参照）。
33 　ピラトは官邸内に戻ると、イエスを呼び寄せて尋ねました。　「おまえはユダヤ人の王か。　どうなんだ。　ええっ。」
34 　「はて、王といわれましても......。　普通の意味での王ですか。　それとも、ユダヤ人の言う王でしょうか。」
35 　ピラトは頭にきて言い返しました。　「なにっ！　私がユダヤ人だとでも言うつもりか。　おまえをここに引っ立てて来たのは、ユダヤ人と祭司長どもなんだぞ。　いったいどうしたのだ。　何をしでかしたのか。」
36 　「わたしは地上の王ではありません。　もし地上の王であったら、逮捕された時、弟子たちは戦いをいどんだでしょう。　わたしの国はこの世のものではないのです。」
37 　「なんだと、それじゃあ、やっぱりおまえは王なんだなっ！」
「いかにもそのとおりです。　そのためにこそ、わたしは生まれたのです。　そう、この世に真理を伝えるために。　真理を愛する者はみな、わたしに従うのです。」
38 　「真理だと？　真理とは何だ。」吐き捨てるように叫ぶと、ピラトはまたユダヤ人たちのところへ行き、こう提案しました。　「あの男は無罪だ。　39 ところで、毎年過越の祭りの時には、囚人を一人釈放してやることになっている。　おまえたちさえよければ、あの『ユダヤ人の王』を釈放してやるが、どうだ。」
40 　「違う！　あいつじゃない！　バラバだ！」彼らはまた大声でわめき立てました。　このバラバという男は強盗だったのです。

John 18

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples.2 Now Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples.3 Judas then, having received the band of soldiers, and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.4 Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went forth, and saith unto them, Whom seek ye?5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.6 When therefore he said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.7 Again therefore he asked them, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.8 Jesus answered, I told you that I am he; if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:9 that the word might be fulfilled which he spake, Of those whom thou hast given me I lost not one.10 Simon Peter therefore having a sword drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant’s name was Malchus.11 Jesus therefore said unto Peter, Put up the sword into the sheath: the cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?12 So the band and the chief captain, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,13 and led him to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.14 Now Caiaphas was he that gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known unto the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;16 but Peter was standing at the door without. So the other disciple, who was known unto the high priest, went out and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.17 The maid therefore that kept the door saith unto Peter, Art thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not.18 Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals; for it was cold; and they were warming themselves: and Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.19 The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his teaching.20 Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I ever taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and in secret spake I nothing.21 Why askest thou me? Ask them that have heard me, what I spake unto them: behold, these know the things which I said.22 And when he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?24 Annas therefore sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore unto him, Art thou also one of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not.26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?27 Peter therefore denied again: and straightway the cock crew.28 They lead Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium: and it was early; and they themselves entered not into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.29 Pilate therefore went out unto them, and saith, What accusation bring ye against this man?30 They answered and said unto him, If this man were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up unto thee.31 Pilate therefore said unto them, Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law. The Jews said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:32 that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying by what manner of death he should die.33 Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?34 Jesus answered, Sayest thou this of thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me?35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end am I come into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find no crime in him.39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?40 They cried out therefore again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.)
