Johannes 21

1 Hierna kwam Jezus nog een keer bij zijn leerlingen en dat was bij het meer van Tiberias. Het gebeurde als volgt.2 Simon Petrus, Thomas, Natanaël uit Kana in Galilea, Jakobus en Johannes en nog twee andere leerlingen waren daar bij elkaar.3 ‘Ik ga vissen,’ zei Simon Petrus. ‘Wij gaan mee,’ zeiden de anderen. Zij gingen naar het meer en voeren met de boot weg. Maar die hele nacht vingen zij niets.4 Toen het licht begon te worden, stond Jezus aan de oever van het meer. Maar zijn leerlingen herkenden Hem niet.5 Jezus riep: ‘Vrienden, hebben jullie iets te eten?’ ‘Nee,’ antwoordden zij.6 ‘Gooi het net uit aan de rechterkant van de boot,’ riep Hij. ‘Dan hebben jullie meer resultaat.’ Dat deden zij. En zij vingen zoveel vis dat ze het net niet eens aan boord konden krijgen.

7 De leerling die Jezus’ beste vriend was, zei tegen Petrus: ‘Het is de Here.’ Toen Simon Petrus dat hoorde, deed hij zijn bovenkleed aan, trok het omhoog tussen zijn riem en sprong in het water.
8 De anderen kwamen met de boot en sleepten het volle net mee. Zij waren maar honderd meter van de kant af.9 Toen zij aan wal stapten, zagen ze een houtskoolvuur met vis erop en brood.10 ‘Haal eens een paar van de vissen die jullie hebben gevangen,’ zei Jezus.

11 Simon Petrus ging weer aan boord en trok het volle net op de oever. Er zaten honderddrieënvijftig vissen in en toch was het net niet gescheurd.
12 ‘Kom,’ zei Jezus. ‘Laten wij gaan eten.’ Geen van de leerlingen durfde te vragen wie Hij was. Ze begrepen nu wel dat het de Here was.13 Jezus gaf hun brood en vis.

14 Na zijn terugkeer uit de dood was dit de derde keer dat Jezus aan zijn leerlingen verscheen.
15 Toen zij gegeten hadden, vroeg Jezus aan Simon Petrus: ‘Simon, zoon van Johannes, houd je van Mij? Meer dan de anderen?’ ‘Ja, Here. U weet dat ik van U houd,’ zei Petrus. ‘Zorg dan voor mijn lammeren,’ was Jezus’ antwoord.16 Jezus vroeg hem voor de tweede keer: ‘Simon, zoon van Johannes, houd je van Mij?’ ‘Ja, Here. U weet toch dat ik van U houd,’ zei Petrus. Jezus zei: ‘Pas dan op mijn schapen.’

17 Voor de derde keer vroeg Jezus: ‘Simon, zoon van Johannes, houd je van Mij?’ Toen Jezus hem voor de derde keer vroeg of hij van Hem hield, werd Petrus verdrietig. ‘Here,’ zei hij, ‘U weet alles. U weet toch dat ik van U houd!’ ‘Zorg dan voor mijn schapen,’ zei Jezus.
18 ‘Luister, toen je jong was, maakte je je eigen plannen en ging waarheen je wilde. Maar als je ouder wordt, zul je niet meer zo vrij zijn. Anderen zullen plannen voor je maken en je brengen waar je niet wilt.’19 Daarmee gaf Hij aan hoe Petrus tot eer van God zou sterven. Jezus zei nog eens nadrukkelijk tegen Petrus dat hij Hem moest volgen.20 Petrus keek achterom en zag dat ze door de leerling gevolgd werden die Jezus’ beste vriend was en die zich tijdens de maaltijd naar Jezus toe had gebogen en Hem gevraagd had wie de verrader was.21 Toen Petrus hem zag, vroeg hij aan Jezus: ‘En wat staat hem te wachten, Here?’22 Jezus antwoordde: ‘Als Ik wil dat hij blijft tot Ik terugkom, is dat niet jouw zaak. Het enige wat jij moet doen, is Mij volgen.’

23 Onder de vrienden van Jezus deed daarna het verhaal de ronde dat die leerling niet zou sterven. Maar Jezus had niet gezegd dat hij niet zou sterven. Hij had alleen gezegd: ‘Als Ik wil dat hij blijft tot Ik terugkom, is dat niet jouw zaak.’
24 En deze leerling is het die dit alles heeft geschreven. Wij weten dat dit verhaal betrouwbaar is.

25 Jezus heeft trouwens nog veel meer gedaan. Maar als dat allemaal opgeschreven zou worden, zou de wereld, denk ik, te klein zijn voor al die boeken.

John 21

1 After these things Jesus manifested himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and he manifested himself on this wise.2 There was together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also come with thee. They went forth, and entered into the boat; and that night they took nothing.4 But when day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach: yet the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.5 Jesus therefore saith unto them, Children, have ye aught to eat? They answered him, No.6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.7 That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his coat about him (for he was naked), and cast himself into the sea.8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits off), dragging the net full of fishes.9 So when they got out upon the land, they see a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now taken.11 Simon Peter therefore went up, and drew the net to land, full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, the net was not rent.12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and break your fast. And none of the disciples durst inquire of him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.13 Jesus cometh, and taketh the bread, and giveth them, and the fish likewise.14 This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.15 So when they had broken their fast, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.16 He saith to him again a second time, Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Tend my sheep.17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.19 Now this he spake, signifying by what manner of death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.20 Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; who also leaned back on his breast at the supper, and said, Lord, who is he that betrayeth thee?21 Peter therefore seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou me.23 This saying therefore went forth among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, that he should not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?24 This is the disciple that beareth witness of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his witness is true.25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that should be written.
