Jesus und der Pharisäer Nikodemus

1 tEiner von den Männern des Hohen Rates war der Pharisäer Nikodemus.2 tMitten in der Nacht kam er heimlich zu Jesus: »Meister«, sagte er, »wir wissen, dass Gott dich als Lehrer zu uns gesandt hat. Denn niemand kann die Wunder tun, die du vollbringst, wenn Gott ihn nicht dazu befähigt.«

3 tDarauf erwiderte Jesus: »Ich will dir etwas sagen, Nikodemus: Wer nicht neu geboren wird, kann nicht in Gottes neue Welt kommen.«4 Verständnislos fragte der Pharisäer: »Wie kann ein Erwachsener neu geboren werden? Er kann doch nicht wieder in den Mutterleib zurück und noch einmal auf die Welt kommen!«

5 t»Ich sage dir die Wahrheit!«, entgegnete Jesus. »Nur wer durch Wasser und durch Gottes Geist neu geboren wird, kann in Gottes neue Welt kommen!6 tEin Mensch kann immer nur menschliches Leben zur Welt bringen. Wer aber durch Gottes Geist geboren wird, bekommt neues Leben.t7 Wundere dich deshalb nicht, wenn ich dir gesagt habe: Ihr müsst neu geboren werden.8 Es ist damit wie beim Wind: Er weht, wie er will. Du hörst ihn, aber du kannst nicht erklären, woher er kommt und wohin er geht. So ist es auch mit der Geburt aus Gottes Geist.«

9 Nikodemus ließ nicht locker: »Aber wie soll das nur vor sich gehen?«10 Jesus erwiderte: »Du bist doch ein anerkannter Gelehrter in Israel und müsstest das eigentlich verstehen!11 Glaube mir: Wir reden nur von dem, was wir genau kennen. Und was wir bezeugen, das haben wir auch gesehen. Trotzdem nehmt ihr unser Wort nicht an.12 Ihr glaubt mir ja nicht einmal, wenn ich von ganz alltäglichen Dingen rede! Wie also werdet ihr mir dann glauben, wenn ich euch erkläre, was im Himmel geschieht?13 tEs gibt nur einen, der zum Himmel hinaufsteigt: der Menschensohn, der vom Himmel herabgekommen ist.

14 Du weißt doch, wie Mose in der Wüste eine Schlange aus Bronze an einem Pfahl aufrichtete, damit jeder, der sie ansah, am Leben bliebt. Genauso muss auch der Menschensohn erhöht werdent.15 tJeder, der ihm vertraut, wird das ewige Leben haben.

16 tDenn Gott hat die Menschen so sehr geliebt, dass er seinen einzigen Sohn für sie hergab. Jeder, der an ihn glaubt, wird nicht zugrunde gehen, sondern das ewige Leben haben.

17 tGott hat nämlich seinen Sohn nicht zu den Menschen gesandt, um über sie Gericht zu halten, sondern um sie zu retten.18 tWer an ihn glaubt, der wird nicht verurteilt werden. Wer aber nicht an den einzigen Sohn Gottes glaubt, über den ist wegen seines Unglaubens das Urteil schon gesprochen.19 tUnd so vollzieht sich das Urteil: Das Licht ist in die Welt gekommen, aber die Menschen lieben die Finsternis mehr als das Licht. Denn alles, was sie tun, ist böse.20 tWer Böses tut, scheut das Licht und bleibt lieber im Dunkeln, damit niemand seine Taten sehen kann.21 Wer aber die Wahrheit Gottes liebt und das tut, was er will, der tritt ins Licht! An ihm zeigt sich: Gott selber bestimmt sein Handeln.«

Johannes der Täufer tritt hinter Jesus zurück

22 tDanach kam Jesus mit seinen Jüngern in die Provinz Judäa. Dort blieb er einige Zeit, um zu taufen.23 Auch Johannes taufte bei Änon, in der Nähe von Salim, weil es dort genügend Wasser gab. Immer wieder kamen Menschen zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen.24 tDenn damals war er noch nicht im Gefängnis.

25 Eines Tages kam es zwischen einigen Jüngern des Johannes und einem Juden zum Streit darüber, welche Taufe wichtiger seit.26 Gemeinsam gingen sie schließlich zu Johannes und berichteten ihm: »Meister, der Mann, der damals am anderen Jordanufer zu dir kam und von dem du gesagt hast, dass er der von Gott versprochene Retter ist, der tauft jetzt selber. Alle Leute gehen zu ihm, anstatt zu uns zu kommen.«

27 tDoch Johannes erwiderte: »Kein Mensch kann auch nur das Geringste tun, wenn es ihm nicht von Gott gegeben wird.28 tIhr selbst könnt doch bezeugen, dass ich immer wieder gesagt habe: ›Ich bin nicht Christus, der von Gott gesandte Retter. Ich soll ihn nur ankündigen, mehr nicht.‹29 tDie Braut gehört schließlich zum Bräutigam! Der Freund des Bräutigams freut sich mit ihm, auch wenn er nur daneben steht. So geht es mir jetzt. Meine Freude ist grenzenlos.30 Christus soll immer wichtiger werden, und ich will immer mehr in den Hintergrund treten.

31 tEr ist vom Himmel gekommen und steht deshalb über allen. Wir aber gehören zur Erde und können nur von irdischen Dingen reden. Christus kommt vom Himmel32 und kann bezeugen, was er dort gesehen und gehört hat. Trotzdem glaubt ihm keiner!33 Wer aber auf seine Botschaft hört, der bestätigt damit: Gott ist zuverlässig und wahrhaftig.34 tChristus ist von Gott zu uns gesandt. Er redet Gottes Worte, weil Gottes Geist ihn ganz und gar erfüllt.35 tDer Vater liebt den Sohn und hat ihm alle Macht gegeben.

36 tWer an den Sohn Gottes glaubt, der hat das ewige Leben. Wer aber nicht auf ihn hört, wird nie zum Leben gelangen, sondern Gottes Zorn wird für immer auf ihm lasten.«

1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:2 the same came unto him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that thou doest, except God be with him.3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God!6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew.8 The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest the voice thereof, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou the teacher of Israel, and understandest not these things?11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and bear witness of that which we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.12 If I told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you heavenly things?13 And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, even the Son of man, who is in heaven.14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up;15 that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life.16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.17 For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him.18 He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God.19 And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.21 But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God.22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.23 And John also was baptizing in Enon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.24 For John was not yet cast into prison.25 There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about purifying.26 And they came unto John, and said to him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou hast borne witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it have been given him from heaven.28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am sent before him.29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, that standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is made full.30 He must increase, but I must decrease.31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth he speaketh: he that cometh from heaven is above all.32 What he hath seen and heard, of that he beareth witness; and no man receiveth his witness.33 He that hath received his witness hath set his seal to this, that God is true.34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for he giveth not the Spirit by measure.35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.36 He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.
