Johannes 3

1 Es war aber ein Mensch unter den Pharisäern namens Nikodemus, ein Oberster der Juden.2 Der kam bei Nacht zu Jesus und sprach zu ihm: Rabbi t , wir wissen, dass du ein Lehrer bist, der von Gott gekommen ist; denn niemand kann diese Zeichen tun, die du tust, es sei denn, dass Gott mit ihm ist.3 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Wenn jemand nicht von Neuem geboren wird t , so kann er das Reich Gottes nicht sehen!4 Nikodemus spricht zu ihm: Wie kann ein Mensch geboren werden, wenn er alt ist? Er kann doch nicht zum zweiten Mal in den Schoß seiner Mutter eingehen und geboren werden?5 Jesus antwortete: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Wenn jemand nicht aus Wasser und Geist t geboren wird, so kann er nicht in das Reich Gottes eingehen!6 Was aus dem Fleisch geboren ist, das ist Fleisch, und was aus dem Geist geboren ist, das ist Geist.7 Wundere dich nicht, dass ich dir gesagt habe: Ihr müsst von Neuem geboren werden!8 Der Wind weht, wo er will, und du hörst sein Sausen; aber du weißt nicht, woher er kommt und wohin er geht. So ist jeder, der aus dem Geist geboren ist.9 Nikodemus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Wie kann das geschehen?10 Jesus erwiderte und sprach zu ihm: Du bist der Lehrer Israels und verstehst das nicht?11 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Wir reden, was wir wissen, und wir bezeugen, was wir gesehen haben; und doch nehmt ihr unser Zeugnis nicht an.12 Glaubt ihr nicht, wenn ich euch von irdischen Dingen sage, wie werdet ihr glauben, wenn ich euch von den himmlischen Dingen sagen werde?13 Und niemand ist hinaufgestiegen in den Himmel, außer dem, der aus dem Himmel herabgestiegen ist, dem Sohn des Menschen, der im Himmel ist.14 Und wie Mose in der Wüste die Schlange erhöhte , so muss der Sohn des Menschen erhöht werden,15 damit jeder, der an ihn glaubt, nicht verlorengeht, sondern ewiges Leben hat.16 Denn so [sehr] t hat Gott die Welt geliebt, dass er seinen eingeborenen Sohn gab, damit jeder, der an ihn glaubt, nicht verlorengeht, sondern ewiges Leben hat.17 Denn Gott hat seinen Sohn nicht in die Welt gesandt, damit er die Welt richte, sondern damit die Welt durch ihn gerettet werde.18 Wer an ihn glaubt, wird nicht gerichtet; wer aber nicht glaubt, der ist schon gerichtet, weil er nicht an den Namen des eingeborenen Sohnes Gottes geglaubt hat. t19 Darin aber besteht das Gericht, dass das Licht in die Welt gekommen ist, und die Menschen liebten die Finsternis mehr als das Licht; denn ihre Werke waren böse.20 Denn jeder, der Böses tut, hasst das Licht und kommt nicht zum Licht, damit seine Werke nicht aufgedeckt werden.21 Wer aber die Wahrheit tut, der kommt zum Licht, damit seine Werke offenbar werden, dass sie in Gott getan sind.22 Danach kam Jesus mit seinen Jüngern in das Land Judäa, und dort hielt er sich mit ihnen auf und taufte .23 Aber auch Johannes taufte in Änon, nahe bei Salim, weil viel Wasser dort war; und sie kamen dorthin und ließen sich taufen.24 Denn Johannes war noch nicht ins Gefängnis geworfen worden.25 Es erhob sich nun eine Streitfrage zwischen den Jüngern des Johannes und einigen Juden wegen der Reinigung.26 Und sie kamen zu Johannes und sprachen zu ihm: Rabbi, der, welcher bei dir war jenseits des Jordan, für den du Zeugnis abgelegt hast, siehe, der tauft, und jedermann kommt zu ihm!27 Johannes antwortete und sprach: Ein Mensch kann sich nichts nehmen t , es sei denn, es ist ihm vom Himmel gegeben.28 Ihr selbst bezeugt mir, dass ich gesagt habe: Nicht ich bin der Christus, sondern ich bin vor ihm her gesandt.29 Wer die Braut hat, der ist der Bräutigam; der Freund des Bräutigams aber, der dasteht und ihn hört, ist hocherfreut über die Stimme des Bräutigams. Diese meine Freude ist nun erfüllt.30 Er muss wachsen , ich aber muss abnehmen. t31 Der von oben kommt, ist über allen. Wer von der Erde ist, der ist von der Erde und redet von der Erde; der aus dem Himmel kommt, ist über allen.32 Und er bezeugt, was er gesehen und gehört hat, und sein Zeugnis nimmt niemand an.33 Wer aber sein Zeugnis annimmt, der bestätigt, dass Gott wahrhaftig ist.34 Denn der, den Gott gesandt hat, redet die Worte Gottes; denn Gott gibt den Geist nicht nach Maß.35 Der Vater liebt den Sohn und hat alles in seine Hand gegeben .36 Wer an den Sohn glaubt , der hat ewiges Leben; wer aber dem Sohn nicht glaubt t , der wird das Leben nicht sehen, sondern der Zorn Gottes bleibt auf ihm.

Jesus and Nicodemus

1 There was a man named Nicodemus who was a Pharisee and a Jewish leader.

2 One night he went to Jesus and said, “Rabbi, we know that God has sent you to teach us. You could not work these miracles, unless God were with you.”

3 Jesus replied, “I tell you for certain that you must be born from abovet before you can see God's kingdom!”

4 Nicodemus asked, “How can a grown man ever be born a second time?”

5 Jesus answered:
I tell you for certain that before you can get into God's kingdom, you must be born not only by water, but by the Spirit. 6 Humans give life to their children. Yet only God's Spirit can change you into a child of God. 7 Don't be surprised when I say that you must be born from above.

8 Only God's Spirit gives new life. The Spirit is like the wind that blows wherever it wants to. You can hear the wind, but you don't know where it comes from or where it is going.

9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

10 Jesus replied:
How can you be a teacher of Israel and not know these things? 11 I tell you for certain we know what we are talking about because we have seen it ourselves. But none of you will accept what we say.

12 t If you don't believe when I talk to you about things on earth, how can you possibly believe if I talk to you about things in heaven?
13  t No one has gone up to heaven except the Son of Man, who came down from there. 14 t And the Son of Man must be lifted up, just as the metal snake was lifted up by Moses in the desert.t

15 Then everyone who has faith in the Son of Man will have eternal life.
16 God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. 17 God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them!

18 No one who has faith in God's Son will be condemned. But everyone who doesn't have faith in him has already been condemned for not having faith in God's only Son.
19 The light has come into the world, and people who do evil things are judged guilty because they love the dark more than the light. 20 People who do evil hate the light and won't come to the light, because it clearly shows what they have done.

21 But everyone who lives by the truth will come to the light, because they want others to know that God is really the one doing what they do.

Jesus and John the Baptist

22 Later, Jesus and his disciples went to Judea, where he stayed with them for a while and was baptizing people.

23-24  t John had not yet been put in jail. He was at Aenon near Salim, where there was a lot of water, and people were coming there for John to baptize them.
25 John's followers got into an argument with a Jewish mant about a ceremony of washing.t

26 They went to John and said, “Rabbi, you spoke about a man when you were with him east of the Jordan. He is now baptizing people, and everyone is going to him.”

27 John replied:
No one can do anything unless God in heaven allows it.

28 t You surely remember how I told you that I am not the Messiah. I am only the one sent ahead of him.
29 At a wedding the groom is the one who gets married. The best man is glad just to be there and to hear the groom's voice. That's why I am so glad.

30 Jesus must become more important, while I become less important.

The One Who Comes //from Heaven

34 The Son was sent to speak God's message, and he has been given the full power of God's Spirit.
35  t The Father loves the Son and has given him everything. 36 Everyone who has faith in the Son has eternal life. But no one who rejects him will ever share in that life, and God will be angry with them forever.
