Jesus en die Samaritaanse vrou

1 Die Fariseërs het gehoor dat Jesus meer dissipels maak en doop as Johannes. — 2 Eintlik was dit nie Jesus wat gedoop het nie, maar sy dissipels. — 3 Toe Jesus dit verneem, het Hy Judea verlaat en weer na Galilea toe gegaan. 4 Hy moes deur Samaria gaan.

5 Hy kom toe by 'n dorp in Samaria met die naam Sigar, naby die stuk grond wat Jakob aan sy seun Josef gegee het. 6 Die fontein van Jakob was daar, en Jesus het toe, omdat Hy moeg was van die reis, sommer by die fontein gaan sit. Dit was omtrent twaalfuur die middag.

7 Daar kom toe 'n Samaritaanse vrou water haal, en Jesus vra vir haar: “Gee My 'n bietjie water om te drink.”

8 Sy dissipels was intussen weg dorp toe om te gaan kos koop.

9 Die Samaritaanse vrou sê toe vir Hom: “Hoe vra jy, wat 'n Jood is, vir my, 'n Samaritaanse vrou, water om te drink?” Die Jode en die Samaritane gaan immers nie met mekaar om nie.

10 Jesus het haar geantwoord: “As jy geweet het wat God gee, en wie dit is wat vir jou sê: ‘Gee My 'n bietjie water om te drink,’ sou jy Hom gevra het, en Hy sou vir jou lewende water gegee het.”

11 Die vrou sê toe vir Hom: “Meneer, jy het nie eens 'n skepding nie, en die put is diep. Waar gaan jy die lewende water vandaan kry? 12 Jy is tog nie tot meer in staat as ons voorvader Jakob wat hierdie put vir ons gegee het en self saam met sy seuns en sy diere daaruit gedrink het nie?”

13 Maar Jesus antwoord haar: “Elkeen wat van hierdie water drink, sal weer dors kry; 14 maar wie van die water gedrink het wat Ek hom sal gee, sal in alle ewigheid nooit dors kry nie. Nee, die water wat Ek hom sal gee, sal in hom 'n fontein wees met water wat opborrel en vir hom die ewige lewe gee.”

15 Die vrou het vir Hom gesê: “Meneer, gee vir my van daardie water, sodat ek nie weer dors sal kry en hier hoef te kom water haal nie.”

16 Hy sê toe vir haar: “Gaan roep jou man en kom terug hierheen.”

17 Die vrou het Hom geantwoord: “Ek het nie 'n man nie.” En Jesus sê vir haar: “Dis reg wat jy nou gesê het: ‘Ek het nie 'n man nie.’

18 Jy het reeds vyf gehad, en die een wat jy nou het, is nie jou man nie. Jy het die waarheid gepraat.”

19 Die vrou het vir Hom gesê: “Meneer, ek sien dat u 'n profeet is. 20 Ons voorouers het God op hierdie berg aanbid, en tog sê julle die plek waar 'n mens God moet aanbid, is in Jerusalem.”

21 Jesus sê toe vir haar: “Glo My, Mevrou, daar kom 'n tyd wanneer julle die Vader nie op hierdie berg en ook nie in Jerusalem sal aanbid nie. 22 Julle aanbid sonder om te weet wat julle aanbid; ons weet wat ons aanbid, want die verlossing kom uit die Jode. 23 Maar daar kom 'n tyd, en dit is nou, wanneer die ware aanbidders die Vader deur die Gees en in waarheid sal aanbid, want die Vader wil juis hê dat die mense wat Hom aanbid, dit so moet doen. 24 God is Gees, en dié wat Hom aanbid, moet Hom deur die Gees en in waarheid aanbid.”

25 Die vrou het vir Hom gesê: “Ek weet dat die Messias kom, Hy wat ook die Christus genoem word. Wanneer Hy kom, sal Hy alles aan ons bekend maak.”

26 Toe sê Jesus vir haar: “Dit is Ek, Ek wat met jou praat.”

Die Samaritane glo in Jesus

27 Net toe het sy dissipels teruggekom en hulle was verbaas dat Hy met 'n vrou praat. Tog het niemand vir haar gevra: “Wat wil jy hê?” of vir Hom: “Waarom praat U met haar?” nie.

28 Die vrou het toe haar waterkruik net daar laat staan en na die dorp toe gegaan en vir die mense gesê: 29 “Kom kyk, hier is 'n man wat my alles vertel het wat ek gedoen het. Is Hy nie miskien die Christus nie?”

30 Die mense het toe uit die dorp uit na Jesus toe begin kom.

31 Intussen het sy dissipels by Hom aangedring: “Rabbi, eet tog 'n stukkie.”

32 Maar Hy sê vir hulle: “Ek het voedsel om te eet waarvan julle nie weet nie.”

33 Die dissipels sê toe vir mekaar: “Sou iemand dalk vir Hom iets te ete gebring het?”

34 Maar Jesus het vir hulle gesê: “My voedsel is om die wil te doen van Hom wat My gestuur het, en om sy werk te voltooi. 35 Sê julle nie: ‘Nog vier maande, dan is die oes daar’ nie? Maar Ek sê vir julle: Kyk daar, kyk na die lande; hulle is ryp vir die oes. 36 Nou al ontvang die man wat oes, sy loon en samel hy die oes in vir die ewige lewe. So is die een wat saai, en die een wat oes, saam bly. 37 Hier is die gesegde waar: ‘Die een saai, en die ander een maai.’ 38 Ek het julle gestuur om 'n oes in te samel waaraan julle nie gearbei het nie. Ander het gearbei, en julle pluk die vrug van hulle arbeid.”

39 Baie van die Samaritane in daardie dorp het tot geloof in Jesus gekom op grond van die woorde van die vrou wat getuig het: “Hy het my alles vertel wat ek gedoen het.” 40 Toe die Samaritane by Hom kom, het hulle by Hom daarop aangedring om by hulle te bly. Hy het twee dae daar gebly. 41 Nog baie meer van hulle het toe tot geloof in Hom gekom op grond van wat Hy gesê het; 42 en hulle het vir die vrou gesê: “Ons glo nie meer op grond van wat jy vertel het nie, want ons het self na Hom geluister, en ons weet dat Hy waarlik die Verlosser van die wêreld is.”

Die genesing van die regeringsamptenaar se seun

43 Ná die twee dae het Jesus daarvandaan na Galilea toe gegaan. 44 Hy het self verklaar dat 'n profeet nie in sy eie land geëer word nie, 45 maar toe Hy in Galilea kom, het die Galileërs Hom verwelkom. Hulle het alles gesien wat Hy gedurende die feesvierings in Jerusalem gedoen het, want hulle was self ook by die paasfees. 46 Jesus het toe weer na Kana in Galilea toe gegaan, waar Hy die water wyn gemaak het. In Kapernaum was daar 'n sekere regeringsamptenaar wie se seun siek was.

47 Toe hy hoor dat Jesus uit Judea na Galilea toe gekom het, het hy na Hom toe gegaan en Hom gevra om te kom en sy seun gesond te maak, want hy het op sterwe gelê. 48 Jesus sê toe vir hom: “As julle nie tekens en wonders sien nie, glo julle eenvoudig nie.”

49 En toe sê die amptenaar vir Hom: “Here, kom tog voordat my kindjie sterwe.”

50 Maar Jesus sê vir hom: “Gaan maar huis toe, jou seun lewe.” Die man het geglo wat Jesus vir hom gesê het, en gegaan.

51 Toe hy nog op pad was, het sy werksmense hom al tegemoet gegaan en vertel dat sy kind lewe. 52 Hy vra hulle toe presies wanneer hy begin beter word het, en hulle antwoord hom: “Gistermiddag eenuur het die koors hom verlaat.”

53 Die pa het toe besef dat dit op dieselfde oomblik was waarop Jesus vir hom gesê het: “Jou seun lewe.” En hy en sy hele huisgesin het tot geloof in Jesus gekom.

54 Dit was die tweede wonderteken wat Jesus gedoen het nadat Hy weer uit Judea na Galilea toe gekom het.

John 4

1  NOW WHEN the Lord knew (learned, became aware) that the Pharisees had been told that Jesus was winning and baptizing more disciples than John--2  Though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples--3  He left Judea and returned to Galilee.4  It was necessary for Him to go through Samaria.5  And in doing so, He arrived at a Samaritan town called Sychar, near the tract of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.6  And Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, tired as He was from His journey, sat down [to rest] by the well. It was then about the sixth hour (about noon).7  Presently, when a woman of Samaria came along to draw water, Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink--8  For His disciples had gone off into the town to buy food--9  The Samaritan woman said to Him, How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan [and a] woman, for a drink?--For the Jews have nothing to do with the Samaritans--10  Jesus answered her, If you had only known and had recognized God’s gift and Who this is that is saying to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him [instead] and He would have given you living water.11  She said to Him, Sir, You have nothing to draw with [no drawing bucket] and the well is deep; how then can You provide living water? [Where do You get Your living water?]12  Are You greater than and superior to our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well and who used to drink from it himself, and his sons and his cattle also?13  Jesus answered her, All who drink of this water will be thirsty again.14  But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) [continually] within him unto (into, for) eternal life.15  The woman said to Him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may never get thirsty nor have to come [continually all the way] here to draw.16  At this, Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband and come back here.17  The woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have spoken truly in saying, I have no husband.18  For you have had five husbands, and the man you are now living with is not your husband. In this you have spoken truly.19  The woman said to Him, Sir, I see and understand that You are a prophet.20  Our forefathers worshiped on this mountain, but you [Jews] say that Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary and proper to worship.21  Jesus said to her, Woman, believe Me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither [merely] in this mountain nor [merely] in Jerusalem.22  You [Samaritans] do not know what you are worshiping [you worship what you do not comprehend]. We do know what we are worshiping [we worship what we have knowledge of and understand], for [after all] salvation comes from [among] the Jews.23  A time will come, however, indeed it is already here, when the true (genuine) worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth (reality); for the Father is seeking just such people as these as His worshipers.24  God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality).25  The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming, He Who is called the Christ (the Anointed One); and when He arrives, He will tell us everything we need to know and make it clear to us.26  Jesus said to her, I Who now speak with you am He.27  Just then His disciples came and they wondered (were surprised, astonished) to find Him talking with a woman [a married woman]. However, not one of them asked Him, What are You inquiring about? or What do You want? or, Why do You speak with her?28  Then the woman left her water jar and went away to the town. And she began telling the people,29  Come, see a Man Who has told me everything that I ever did! Can this be [is not this] the Christ? [Must not this be the Messiah, the Anointed One?]30  So the people left the town and set out to go to Him.31  Meanwhile, the disciples urged Him saying, Rabbi, eat something.32  But He assured them, I have food (nourishment) to eat of which you know nothing and have no idea.33  So the disciples said one to another, Has someone brought Him something to eat?34  Jesus said to them, My food (nourishment) is to do the will (pleasure) of Him Who sent Me and to accomplish and completely finish His work.35  Do you not say, It is still four months until harvest time comes? Look! I tell you, raise your eyes and observe the fields and see how they are already white for harvesting.36  Already the reaper is getting his wages [he who does the cutting now has his reward], for he is gathering fruit (crop) unto life eternal, so that he who does the planting and he who does the reaping may rejoice together.37  For in this the saying holds true, One sows and another reaps.38  I sent you to reap a crop for which you have not toiled. Other men have labored and you have stepped in to reap the results of their work.39  Now numerous Samaritans from that town believed in and trusted in Him because of what the woman said when she declared and testified, He told me everything that I ever did.40  So when the Samaritans arrived, they asked Him to remain with them, and He did stay there two days.41  Then many more believed in and adhered to and relied on Him because of His personal message [what He Himself said].42  And they told the woman, Now we no longer believe (trust, have faith) just because of what you said; for we have heard Him ourselves [personally], and we know that He truly is the Savior of the world, the Christ. 43  But after these two days Jesus went on from there into Galilee--44  Although He Himself declared that a prophet has no honor in his own country.45  However, when He came into Galilee, the Galileans also welcomed Him and took Him to their hearts eagerly, for they had seen everything that He did in Jerusalem during the Feast; for they too had attended the Feast.46  So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son was lying ill in Capernaum.47  Having heard that Jesus had come back from Judea into Galilee, he went away to meet Him and began to beg Him to come down and cure his son, for he was lying at the point of death.48  Then Jesus said to him, Unless you see signs and miracles happen, you [people] never will believe (trust, have faith) at all.49  The king’s officer pleaded with Him, Sir, do come down at once before my little child is dead!50  Jesus answered him, Go in peace; your son will live! And the man put his trust in what Jesus said and started home.51  But even as he was on the road going down, his servants met him and reported, saying, Your son lives!52  So he asked them at what time he had begun to get better. They said, Yesterday during the seventh hour (about one o’clock in the afternoon) the fever left him.53  Then the father knew that it was at that very hour when Jesus had said to him, Your son will live. And he and his entire household believed (adhered to, trusted in, and relied on Jesus).54  This is the second sign (wonderwork, miracle) that Jesus performed after He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
