Johannes 4

1 Jesus het geweet dat die Fariseërs gehoor het dat Hy gewild begin raak het en dat Hy meer mense doop as Johannes. Daarom is Hy weer van Judea af terug Galilea toe.2 (Eintlik het Jesus nie self gedoop nie. Sy volgelinge het dit namens Hom gedoen.)
3-4 'n Mens kan deur Samaria na Galilea toe gaan.5 Op pad het Jesus besluit om by Sigar in Samaria te gaan rus. Sigar het naby die stuk grond gelê wat Jakob destyds aan sy seun Josef gegee het.6 Dit was juis ook die plek waar 'n put oor die fontein van Jakob gebou is. Jesus het sommer by die put gaan uitspan, moeg van die lang pad. Dit was omtrent twaalfuur die middag.7 'n Samaritaanse vrou kom toe daar aan om water te skep.
Jesus vra haar toe: "Gee My asseblief 'n bietjie water om te drink."
8 (Sy dissipels was toe reeds dorp toe om kos te gaan koop.)
9 "Verskoon my," sê sy, "maar waarom vra jy my water om te drink? Is jy nie 'n Joodse man en ek 'n Samaritaanse vrou nie?" (Sy het dit gevra omdat die Jode normaalweg niks met die Samaritane te doen wou hê nie.)
10 "As jy geweet het wat God vir mense wil gee en besef het wie vir jou water vra, sou jy nie so 'n vraag gevra het nie. Jy sou eerder vir Hom water gevra het en Hy sou vir jou lewende water gegee het, het Jesus gesê."
11 "Meneer, hierdie put is diep en jy het nie eens 'n emmer en tou nie. Waar dink jy gaan jy daardie vars water vandaan kry?" vra sy.12 "Jy is tog sekerlik nie beter as ons voorvader Jakob wat hierdie put vir ons nagelaat het nie. Hy self het water uit hierdie put gedrink, soos sy kinders en diere ook."
13 "Wel, elkeen wat van hierdie put se water drink, sal na 'n rukkie weer dors word," antwoord Jesus.14 "Wie egter van die water drink wat Ek hom sal gee, sal nooit ooit weer dors word nie. Daar sal iets in daardie persoon gebeur. Die water wat Ek vir hom sal gee, sal in 'n fontein binne-in hom verander. Hierdie borrelende, lewende water sal maak dat hy vir ewig sal lewe."
15 "Meneer, gee my asseblief van daardie water," vra sy dadelik. "Dink net, ek sal dan nooit weer dors word nie en ook nooit weer die moeite hoef te doen om hier te kom water haal nie."
16 Hy vra haar toe: "Gaan roep gou jou man en kom hier."
17 "Ek het nie 'n man nie," sê sy.
"Dit is 'n eerlike antwoord," sê Jesus.18 "Jy was voorheen al vyf maal getroud. Boonop is jy nie eens getroud met die man met wie jy nou saambly nie. Ja, jy het die waarheid gepraat."
19 "Meneer, jy is sowaar 'n profeet. Kom, sê my 'n bietjie, ons voorvaders het God op hierdie berg aanbid.20 Julle Jode sê weer dat Jerusalem die regte plek is om God te aanbid. Wat sê jy daarvan?" vra sy.
21 "Mevrou," sê Jesus, "dit is nie meer lank nie, dan gaan julle die Vader nie meer hier op hierdie berg of in Jerusalem aanbid nie.22 Julle Samaritane ken nie regtig die God wat julle aanbid nie. Ons Jode ken daardie God. Geen wonder nie, want God se stroom van redding borrel eers in die Jodedom op en vloei dan na almal. Die tyd is nou ryp! Opregte gelowiges sal nie meer na 'n spesiale heilige plek hoef te gaan om die Vader daar te dien nie.23 Tye verander. Hulle sal nou op enige plek met God kan praat, net solank hulle dit opreg met die hulp van die Heilige Gees doen. Die Vader self het besluit dat dit so moet wees.24 Immers, God is Gees. Daarom is dit verstaanbaar en nodig dat die Heilige Gees die gelowiges moet help om Hom opreg te dien soos Hy daarvan hou."
25 Die vrou sê toe weer: "Ek weet dat die Messias kom. Die Grieke praat mos van Hom as 'Christus'. Nou ja, wanneer Hy kom, sal Hy vir ons van al die nuwe dinge kom vertel."
26 Toe sê Jesus vir haar: "Ek is die Redder, die Messias, wat nou met jou praat."
27  Net toe kom sy dissipels daar aan. Hulle was nogal verbaas toe hulle Jesus met die vrou sien gesels, maar het nie 'n woord gesê nie. Nie een het eens vir haar gevra: "Wat soek jy?" of vir Hom: "Waarom praat U met haar?" nie.28 Die vrou is toe terug dorp toe, sonder haar waterkruik. "Kom gou!" het sy die mense geroep. "Ek het 'n vreemde man raakgeloop wat my hele lewensverhaal vir my vertel het.29 Kom kyk, is Hy nie dalk die Christus nie?"30 Die mense het nie op hulle laat wag nie, maar is inderhaas uit die dorp uit na Hom toe.
31 By die put het die dissipels intussen vir Hom gesê: "Rabbi, U moet iets eet."
32 Sy antwoord was: "Ek het my eie kos waarvan julle nie eens weet nie."
33 Die dissipels bespiegel toe onder mekaar: "Het iemand anders dalk intussen vir Hom iets gebring om te eet?"
34 Jesus help hulle toe reg: "Weet julle wat is vir My soos kos? Dít: om presies te doen wat God wat My gestuur het, wil hê Ek moet doen. Alles wat Hy wil hê Ek moet doen, wil Ek klaarmaak. Wanneer Ek dit doen, voel Ek 'versadig', net soos iemand wat lekker geëet het.
35 "Julle sê mos partykeer: 'Oor vier maande kan ons begin oes.' Ek het vir julle nuus. Maak julle geestelike oë oop en kyk om julle. Kyk mooi na die 'lande'. 'Oestyd' is hier. Kyk net hoe ryp staan die 'oes'.36 Die oes word nou reeds volstoom ingesamel. Mense wat 'oes', kry al hulle 'lone'. Dit gaan natuurlik nie om 'n gewone oes nie, maar om die 'oes van mense'. Omdat hulle deel van die 'oes' is, sal hulle vir altyd saam met God leef.37 Julle ken mos die gesegde: 'Die een saai en die ander een maai.'38 Dit is ook hier waar. Julle weet wat julle in die wêreld vir My moet doen: julle moet gaan om hierdie 'oes' in te samel, al het julle nie self daaraan gewerk nie. Ander mense het hard daaraan gewerk. Julle moet egter die goeie resultate van wat hulle gedoen het, gaan insamel."
39 Baie Samaritane uit daardie dorp het in Jesus geglo. Die vrou het mos aan hulle vertel dat Jesus alles van haar geweet het. Dit het hulle oortuig.40 Die Samaritane is toe na Jesus toe. Hulle het by Hom aangehou om by hulle te kom oorbly. Jesus het toe twee dae daar by hulle gebly. In die twee dae het Jesus verder met hulle gesels.41 Die gevolg was dat baie meer van hulle sy vriende geword het.42 Hulle het vir die vrou gesê: "Ons glo nou nie meer net omdat jy ons van Hom kom vertel het nie. Ons het die kans gehad om self na Hom te luister.
"Ons twyfel nie meer nie: hierdie man is waarlik die Redder wat sou kom. Hy bring nie net vir ons of die Jode redding nie, maar vir al die mense in die wêreld."
43  Twee dae later is Jesus Galilea toe.44 Jesus het goed geweet en het ook vir die mense gesê dat 'n profeet nie gerespekteer word deur die mense onder wie hy grootgeword het nie.45 Toe Hy egter in Galilea aankom, is Hy met oop arms ontvang. Dit was ook maar net omdat die mense daar al die dinge gesien het wat Jesus by die feestelikhede in Jerusalem gedoen het. Hulle self was ook Jerusalem toe vir die paasfees.46 Jesus is toe Kana toe. Dit is dieselfde dorpie waar Hy die water in wyn laat verander het. Daar was 'n hoë staatsamptenaar wat in Kapernaum vir die koning gewerk het. Sy seun het intussen baie siek geword.47 Die nuus het by hom uitgekom dat Jesus terug is uit Judea. Hy is dadelik na Jesus toe en het Hom gevra om asseblief saam met hom huis toe te kom. Sy seun was besig om dood te gaan en hy wou hê Jesus moet hom gesond maak.
48 Jesus sê toe: "As dit nie vir al die wonderlike dinge was wat Ek gedoen het nie, sou julle ook maar nie geglo het nie."
49 Die man hou toe egter vol: "Here, kom tog asseblief gou voordat my kind doodgaan."
50 Jesus sê toe: "Gaan maar huis toe. Jou seun lewe."
Die man het Jesus vertrou en is terug huis toe.51 Hy was nog op pad toe sy werkers al met die goeie nuus aankom: "U seun leef!"52 Hy vra hulle toe uit oor presies wanneer sy seun beter begin word het. "Omtrent so eenuur gistermiddag het sy koors begin breek," sê hulle.53 Toe hy mooi terugdink, besef die pa dat dit juis die tyd was toe hy en Jesus gesels het. Jesus het toe mos al vir hom gesê dat sy seun lewe. Hy, saam met almal wat in sy huis bly, het toe in Jesus geglo.54 Dit was die tweede wonderteken wat Jesus in Galilea gedoen het nadat Hy teruggekom het uit Judea.

Departure From Judea

1 Now when Jesusst knew that the Phariseess had heard that het was winningt and baptizing more disciples than John2 (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were),s

3 he left Judea and set out once more for Galilee.s

Conversation With a Samaritan Woman

4 But he hads to pass through Samaria.s5 Now he came to a Samaritan townt called Sychar,s near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.s

6 Jacob’s well was there, so Jesus, since he was tired from the journey, sat right down besidet the well. It was about noon.ts
7 A Samaritan womant came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me some watert to drink.”8 (For his disciples had gone off into the town to buy supplies.t)s

9 So the Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you – a Jewt – ask me, a Samaritan woman, for watert to drink?” (For Jews use nothing in commonts with Samaritans.)s
10 Jesus answeredt her, “If you had knownt the gift of God and who it is who said to you, ‘Give me some watert to drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”ts11 “Sir,”t the womans said to him, “you have no bucket and the wellt is deep; where then do you get thist living water?s

12 Surely you’re not greater than our ancestort Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock.”t
13 Jesus replied,t “Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirstyt again.14 But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again,t but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountaint of water springing upt to eternal life.”15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to drawt water.”t16 Hess said to her, “Go call your husband and come back here.”t17 The woman replied,t “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “Right you are when you said,t ‘I have no husband,’t

18 for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living witht now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!”
19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I seet that you are a prophet.20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,s and you peoplet say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.”s21 Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman,s a timet is coming when you will worshipt the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.22 You peoplet worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.t23 But a timet is coming – and now is heret – when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seekss such people to bet his worshipers.ts24 God is spirit,t and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (the one called Christ);ts “whenever het comes, he will tellt us everything.”t

26 Jesus said to her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.”

The Disciples Return

27 Now at that very moment his disciples came back.t They were shockedt because he was speakingt with a woman. However, no one said, “What do you want?”ts or “Why are you speaking with her?”28 Then the woman left her water jar, went off into the town and said to the people,t29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Surely he can’t be the Messiah,t can he?”t

30 Sot they left the town and began comings to him.

Workers for the Harvest

31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him,t “Rabbi, eat something.”t32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”33 So the disciples began to sayt to one another, “No one brought him anythingt to eat, did they?”t34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of the one who sent mes and to completet his work.ts35 Don’t you say,t ‘There are four more months and then comes the harvest?’ I tell you, look upt and see that the fields are already whitet for harvest!36 The one who reaps receives payt and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together.37 For in this instance the saying is true,t ‘One sows and another reaps.’

38 I sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”

The Samaritans Respond

39 Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified,t “He told me everything I ever did.”40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they began askingt him to stay with them.t He stayed there two days,41 and because of his word many moret believed.

42 They said to the woman, “No longer do we believe because of your words, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this onet really is the Savior of the world.”s

Onward to Galilee

43 After the two days he departed from there to Galilee.44 (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)s

45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen all the things he had done in Jerusalemss at the feasts (for they themselves had gone to the feast).s

Healing the Royal Official’s Son

46 Now he came again to Canas in Galilee where he had made the water wine.s Int Capernaumss there was a certain royal officialt whose son was sick.47 When he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged himt to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you peoplet see signs and wonders you will never believe!”t49 “Sir,” the official said to him, “come down before my child dies.”

50 Jesus told him, “Go home;t your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and set off for home.t
51 While he was on his way down,s his slavest met him and told him that his son was going to live.52 So he asked them the timet when his condition began to improve,t andt they told him, “Yesterday at one o’clock in the afternoont the fever left him.”53 Then the father realized that it was the very timet Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live,” and he himself believed along with his entire household.

54 Jesus did this as his second miraculous signt when he returned from Judea to Galilee.
